I've gone through all the chatter and hype on the new DJI Mavic 3, and I'd like to offer a rational, level-headed discussion where I review the specs, features and prices for this drone, and help you decide if the DJI Mavic 3, Mavic 3 Fly More Combo or DJI Mavic 3 Cine is right for you - or, if you should stick with something like the DJI Mavic Air 2 or Mavic Air 2S.

Another well thought out and presented video. Thanks for being honest and for providing factual information that helps us make an informed decision. I agree, it's too much (in any flavor). Add to that the fact that the US government is not DJI friendly and the fact that it's not ready for prime time, and it's an easy "no thanks" for me.

well said. I can forgive the fact that it's being released without all its advertised features. But they've had 3 years to get this drone right, and then to sell it before it's ready for such a huge price increase . . . that's a problem.

Hi Jeff I started with Dji Phantom 3 standard around May 2016 then after 2 years moved on to the Phantom 4 pro v2 this was a really good drone and now I fly Air 2s and Evo 2 pro 6k . The Autel evo 2 pro gives me by far much better video & image quality , dont get me wrong the Air 2s is a really good drone but for me Autel evo 2 pro has better quality. As you know both drones have a 1" sensor. I am holding off buying Marvic 3 Because Sometime next year Evo 3 will be out, am in no rush I can wait to see what it offers. Best wishes Matt G.

Hi Matt - I haven't heard anything on the Evo 3 - if it comes out next year, I'm almost frightened to see what it will cost. The Autel drones tend to come in a little higher than the DJI drone, and I'm hoping that doesn't happen again after this massive price increase for the M3.

Excellent review Jeff! This drone seems to be DJI's departure from reality into the world of pure hype with a drone that wasn't ready for the market. It would have been feature packed except the firmware isn't ready.....It could have had some really exciting capabilities with the twin camera configuration if the tele camera was controllable, produced RAW, etc. They delivered 5.1K because it's preferred over 6K? I purchased a Mavic 3 partly because I already found a home for my 4th DJI drone. Unless that firmware update in January is a substantial update in capabilities, including greater control of the tele camera, I may be looking for a new home for my 5th and last DJI product.
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get they wanted this out before Christmas, but they've had three YEARS to figure this stuff out. I will say this, though; DJI is very good at putting out firmware updates to upgrade their drones. So I'm hopeful they will improve the quality and capability of the second camera and the smart modes. But what about waypoints? I'd like to see that feature added too. The 5.1K I don't get. It's even slightly less than the Air 2S, not actually 16x9? As Brian on Family Guy says, "what the hell???" I would have liked to see 6K with that big 4/3 sensor. But the real killer for me is that it doesn't work with the existing Smart Controller. I really need that screen on the Smart Controller, so that means if I want the base drone, I'll have to spend $3400 plus tax - and I only have one battery. That's a hard pill to swallow.

@@JeffSibelius My Mavic 3 arrived 2 days ago and my initial impression is that there is a lot for them to fix. Great marketing, ok/good drone, over-hyped and over-priced. The good first....4/3 sensor main camera performance is a noticeable improvement. Extended gimble range is an added benefit. Speed, range, flight stability in moderate winds, extended flight time, and obstacle avoidance are superior. Very impressive carry bag and excellent portability. Now the issues so far....we all know about the firmware issues, but the DJI FLY App seems like a big step backwards from the Go App. We have lost the ability to color correct or otherwise apply color 'themes' or styles to photographs (ie black and white, old film color palette, or even dynamic or exaggerated palettes, etc). It seems they are pushing this control to post processing? Telephoto camera/lens seems to be a gimmick. Great idea, poorly executed. What good is the telephoto camera if you can't use the image (image quality, control, and no RAW format)? The main camera is impressive. The telephoto camera/lens is a toy. In the current form, assuming the big firmware update fixes some of this, I would call this drone overpriced, rushed, and good enough for many pro-sumers. If I had a Mavic 2 Pro or a 2S, I would hold for the Mavic 4 / Mavic 3 fix. I'm contemplating returning my Mavic 3, but I want to give it a little more time to see if I'm missing something?

@@jeffteroller6796 Excellent feedback, Jeff. I appreciated your thoughts on the Fly app in particular - it's been awhile since DJI released a drone that used Go 4, so people forgot what it offered that Fly does not. I think they have improved the Fly app quite a bit, but the bottom line is that it doesn't allow camera settings, it doesn't have waypoints and its onscreen warning display of obstacles make it a sub par app. I will say this for DJI - the company is very good about releasing firmware updates and adding value to its new drones. I fully expect the firmware update in January will deliver much of what is missing - Active Track, etc. I don't anticipate they will do much with the second camera any time soon. I could be wrong but I really don't. Over the past several drones, DJI has added features which sound great, but when you get into using them, they are limited. The Mavic 2 Pro had omnidirectional OA, but the side OA only worked in a few limited modes - so it didn't really have omnidirectional OA that you could use in most situations where you fly. The Air 2S had zoom, but not for still photos or 5.4K video. It had MasterShots, but only at 1080P. It had APAS, but it really didn't - the drone would stop for an obstacle, but in many cases would not work its way around the obstacle - that's not APAS. And the Mavic 3 has a second camera, but it's got a half inch sensor and only shoots in auto mode. We shall see. Hey, would you do me a favor? Would you shoot some short clips (10-15 seconds) at 5.1K resolution for me? I really want to see how much impact that 4/3 sensor has on image quality. If you could do that and put them some place where they could be downloaded, it would be a huge help for me!

I'm with you 10000% on getting the Mavic 3 and not the fly more combo. Mine is arriving Thursday and honestly should be the last thing I buy for a while for my business. It's my first year up and I've been spending spending spending. I got it because right now I have the Mavic Air 2 but when I color grade, I see it fall apart. So the mavic 3 makes sense for me. Great post, Jason. It's a tough question. I honestly can't answer it because I haven't seen any Mavic 3 raw footage. I will tell you this: I shot with the Typhoon H and Phantom 4 Pro for construction photography and finished building products for a few years, and never had a complaint about the quality. And I'd put the Mavic Air 2 / 2S up against those in most cases. However, if you're buying for business purposes, having the best quality available when you buy makes sense. Keep watching for other reviewers to post raw footage that you can download, and take a very critical look at the quality. I've put Air 2S video up for people to download on other videos if you want to see the quality you get from that drone.

I completely agree. I was all set to upgrade my Air 2 to this, but then the price came out and I'm now uncertain whether it's worth it; not least because DxO RAW now exists and helps with the one thing I wish I could improve on (i.e. Low light graininess). DJI need to be selling the base drone with the RC Pro controller for the price that they're asking. I agree that the combo is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. Do the maths and it's not worth the extra. Why is the RC Pro only available with the Cine version?

I think the new RC will ultimately be sold as a separate item - it would be nice if they bundled it with the Mavic 3 to bring down the price a little. $1200 is the rumored price for that thing, and it's just too expensive.

I think that's a wise decision. The Air 2 is a tremendous drone. When I went on vacation this year, I had a lot of drones to choose from. I chose to use the Air 2 because of its reliability and video quality and it was so small and convenient to take with us.
@SkonrokkenTV

Crazy prices. So not sure I'll upgrade from Mavic 2 pro...but 4/3rds sensor may be worth it. For better low light. The Cine version is obviously only for those who need prores 422. Inspire users who want something smaller. It will really depend on the footage at the end of the day. Mavic 2 pro footage was a bit soft, but colors were great. Really low light was pretty bad. Lots of noise at high isos. Talking about shooting at night with a fireplace. Will probably upgrade, but will wait awhile until firmware etc are in place. And I've saved up the cough 3750 usd they want for it in Europe. Remember we have 25% VAT taxes here.

Oh, I forgot the VAT tax . . . that's really awful. You're describing the quandary so many of us are facing. We see a legitimate upgrade with the sensor, but the price really pushes people away. @@JeffSibelius You are probably right regarding anything Autel launch, but then Autel are targeting very specific customers. I'm thinking more about companies like Fimi and Hubsan who lean towards the budget end of the market. Sure I know their drones are normally missing a few of the features of the DJI products, and they may be slightly inferior on some of the specifications, but they usually offer something comparable for a lot less money 💸. From my own perspective, as long as it goes up and takes good quality videos and pictures I'm not bothered if it's missing a few sensors or other features, if they can make it fly roughly the same length of time and give it similar range then I think I'd rather save the money, plus I wouldn't be quite as worried about losing it! 😬

@@Altair885 The Fimis and Hubsans will probably always be cheaper, for sure. And DJI has left them a big price space to target with their upgrades as well. What we really lack is quality competition as much as price competition. Fimi, Parrot and Hubsan doesn't compete in terms of quality. Skydio doesn't really compete - it's a completely different drone that serves a different purpose. Yuneec is dead. Although I will say regarding quality, I've been using a Fimi x8 se 2020 version for about a year now non stop, apart from the camera tilt issue which is now resolved it's been very reliable and satisfactory! Good reasoning! With those price points it seems like DJI is abandoning the hobby/casual photographer and videographer market with this model. They made the decision easy for us as the cost of the new features are hard to justify. They increased the capabilities by maybe 30-35% and the price point by over 50%++ on what was already a premium expense. DJI might be reading the writing on the wall with governments over-regulating the hobbyist out of the market. The 3 targets the pro’s that will pay a big price for hard to notice video improvements. Time to buy new batteries for the Mavic Pro 2 or Mavic Air 2s!

You may be right. I think another part of it is, there is no real competition for this type of drone so DJI can simply jack up the price to whatever they want. It's a "take it or leave it" attitude. Hi Jeff, DJI didn't tell their customers that the Mavic 3 is missing a number of features that won't be supplied until next year. Significant is that the Mavic 3 was supposed to have a mechanical shutter, it doesn't. Seems DJI is taking a page out of Hubsan's playbook. One Mavic 3 review shows that the flight time is much shorter than spec. DJI had three years to get this drone right. Does anyone remember the Ford Edsel, a car that nobody wanted? I think that DJI with its outrageous pricing of The Mavic 3 has done themselves in, sales will falter. I am happy with my Autel EVO ll Pro and definitely won't be buying the Mavic 3 at current prices.

Some of the features won't be available until January, you're correct. I get that DJI wanted this thing on store shelves before Christmas, so they released it before it was ready. It's a shame though, because people who want those features don't know how good they'll be until then. APAS was dumbed down from the Air 2 to the Air 2S. Will that be improved? Did they do anything like this with Active Track or the other flight modes? This drone should have a mechanical shutter. That's more important than the 2nd camera, IMHO, if they want this to be considered a prosumer drone.

I really wish I could get one of the Mavic 3s just so I could do comparison flights and set up raw footage for people to download and compare. Because, in the final analysis, that's the key. Everything else is ancillary to image quality when it comes to determining the value of the Mavic 3.

For the average Joe this is to much money 💰, if you have a dji drone it's not any different if you just post up to KZbin.
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty rich, for sure. I think you're right, posting on KZbin tends to leach out a lot of the enhanced quality you get from the super drones. I'm still considering this drone for commercial usage, and because several of my drones are older - but the price and the lack of compatibility with the Smart Controller has me second guessing it as well.

Just to make everyone aware that DJI Care Coupons and DJI Accessories Coupon can't be used on the Mavic 3 or it's accessories. Very stingy by DJI ,and needless to say I won't be purchasing. Such a disappointment.

Sounds like your a little bitter that your not in the club of freebies? I'm buying the Mavic 3 Cini
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 2 жыл бұрын
Bitter? not at all. It's frustrating that in many cases, the people who get the freebies before release date don't use the opportunity to look at the drones critically, but instead release fanboyish advertisements instead. But I can't blame DJI for doing it - there is a lot to pick apart with this drone . . . why send it to someone who will be honest and pick it apart? Sounds like you're a little bit of a fanboy yourself, Hando.

@@JeffSibelius it was certainly was speculated and what peaked my interest for a compact drone especially with a 46min flight time. But alas, and like you mentioned DJI Fly app? these are expensive questions.

I will stick with my Mavic 2 Zoom. DJI have out price them self and not counting the FAA with there bullshit.

LOL yeah the FAA is always out there . . . the consensus I'm hearing in the comments so far is that people are suffering sticker shock with the Mavic 3. I'm glad it's not just me!

I was honestly shocked by the price, even for the base model. It's just a huge price jump from the Mavic 2 Pro.

What a pointless video...you are just reading of spec sheet...truth is it cant do anything it says ,updates in jan next year with no guarantee ,flight times are poor...why buy it?
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 3 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. The last half of the video was a discussion on the features, specs and pricing - this goes well beyond just reading specs. I try to raise some thoughts and issues that people may not have considered, and won't be addressed in many of the videos from people who were handed the drone.
