DJI Osmo Pocket 3: Low Light vs. Regular Mode - Ultimate Test!

Do you think the Low Light mode did better and what scenarios would you use it? Pretty surprising results in some of the scenarios shot here - and the mic 2 also worked like a champ even when standing next to a really loud dam and road!

Hey Brian, loved the Pocket 3 test outing! Question: Were you using the internal mics? It seemed like you were from the ambient noise. If I recall, I thought you had the Mic 2, but perhaps you wanted to test out the internal? Anyways, other than doing comparison tests, I've never used the Low-light mode in my videos. I feel like the Pocket 3 does great, but then again...where I live, there are so many lights in Seoul. But, both modes looked great! You are correct in the fact that Low-light will not auto-frame...I think it lost focus a couple of times on low-light mode on your face. But, regardless...they both do an outstanding job for such a small camera! Well done!

Actually it is the mic 2, I was just next to a very loud dam in the river and then traffic near the road - I thought that the audio would be unusable, but really amazing that it was somewhat usable and I think I still sounded pretty clear. Looking back at the footage - I think the low light mode really did not add enough to make it work switching in and out of - I still am not sure what the actualy use case for it is.

Good results! Which color profile did you set and use, and did you try DLog for higher dynamic range at all?

@richritter thanks for watching! This is just standard profile, no DLog! If not already, check out this second video I did that I compared with a GoPro - about halfway in, I was in a ridiculously dark remote village in the Philippines with normal profile and again not low light mode, and it still made good usable footage IMO! This thing is a beast at night.

The Pocket 3 blows my Pocket 1 out of the water, but honestly I didn't see much of a difference between the regular and low light modes.

Thanks for watching buddy and agree!- I honestly was surprised, I even think the normal mode was a bit better in some cases- maybe lowlight mode is meant for filming from a dark cave or something 😅

Try low light on 4k/60fps. On 30fps I see now a lot motion blur. I checked other videos, you can play with the shutter speed, sharpness, denoise to get better results.

Thanks! Do you mean in low light mode try the different settings, or even in normal mode? As shot I could not tell much difference between the two - but with different settings are you saying the low light mode speifically will give even better results?

Yes, I have one Pocket 3 rented. The basic mode even works well in low light conditions. I've used 2.7k 60fps with sharpness -2 and noise reduction -2@@BMadPhoto

I found in my own testing, Low light tightened up the overall dynamic range compared to the normal at night. Especially with bright lights and darker areas, the low light toned down the bright lights and brought up the shadows. When in normal mode, the lights seemed blown out and the low light areas were good. Seemed like a better balance in low light mode.

Ah thanks good to know! In the recent low light comparison I did vs the gopro it was very very dark, I forgot to also try LL mode.

I watched a bunch of videos with everyone saying low light mode was amazing and the best for night footage, then I went out and shot a bunch of bike riders at night using low light mode, and the footage looks like trash. I need to keep testing. Very frustrated with first performance. I doubt I will ever use LL mode again.
