He: "DJI Mavic Pro is cheap" My wallet: "I'm offended"
@highks4964 жыл бұрын
Given the amount of tech you get in the Mavic package, it actually is cheap. You are getting a pretty decent miniature camera with good enough professional controls in a very decent gimbal/stabilizer system, attached to a nice computerized quad-drone with helpful automation features for single-person-operation. Also a good remote controller and a nice software package. I can still remember when I first saw footage of the Phantom 4 (version 1, not pro) on KZbin a couple years back, I was thinking to myself "I really hope this is less than 3000 bucks so I can immediately get it". But I thought it was wishful thinking and it was probably more expensive. Then I went to the website and found out it was like 1500 with a ready-to-fly package including three batteries. I had to double check because this was so much less than I had expected.

I love my mavic and would never spend the kind of money to get a true professional setup but just as you say the mavic held it's own, the only reason that is true is because of the nature of such a basic shoot. If the video was done as part of a professional movie type I doubt it would be able to truly hold its own. I think the real reason it wouldn't hold its own is because of the post processing ability that you can get from having the ultra high dollar cameras attached to the pro rig. Cinematography wise Trent even said that there are others who could fly the Mavic better, which would clean up a lot of his shots. End of the day I'm sticking with my slightly over $1300 all told setup and saving the extra $99,000 for something like a house.

The Mavic line is relatively common around here among professional camera teams who shoot for tv and/or industrial film. It's nice to have it in your bag and be able to get a few additional aerial shots just like that. It does increase the perceived production value of your tv piece or docu piece or whatever without adding extra cost. It's so small you can pack it in a bag and always have it in your car, ready to fly in 2 minutes. Funny enough the main reason I got my first Phantom a few years back was that I had time and time again spent an hour or two searching for a spot on a hill to get a long shot of some village or town, often with no good results. With a little drone, you can get that long shot from the air in 5 minutes, even with some nice tracking movement. So, the little Mavic does add perceived quality to my work and that of others in my situation. And for us it's either get those shots with a Mavic, or don't get them at all. There is no way I could lug an Alta with a Red to most of my shoots and also get an additional cameraman or drone pilot to operate it.
@tjmarx4 жыл бұрын
I think that's the point of the video though, I think he understands that and is trying to make a case for why you should hire him instead because he's worried; and also needs to convince his wife, that the remortgage on his house he took out to pay for the drone and camera will be worth it. I think he's worried because mid-tier budget productions are starting to question why they need to pay for 2 guys to fly a drone plus camera hire when they can get similar aeriel shots from 1 guy and at a lower rate with a DJI or similar prosumer drone.

"Professional" only means you get compensated for what you do. A paper bag carrying Tupperware for someone who sells Tupperware is "pro gear". High End, thats subjective. Different people expect different things from what they use. Casey Neistat made a very good living as one of the most successful independent filmmakers today. He used these 1 to $2k drones endlessly. That Mavic Pro could easily have a $20k price on it, and it would sell. Not to the average consumer, but to highly paid professionals like yourself. That footage you needed on the balcony was done on that drone. If it couldn't create usable footage to sell and make a profit for you, you wouldn't use it. It wouldn't be a professional piece of gear. But it does and it did. And You would profit having spent 20k to have it around for such events.

A tripod and fluid head for one of these lenses is like 25k. But apparently, tight close-ups of players in the game sell so much beer and chips that it's worth having up to twenty of those things at every game. However, you would see a night and day difference if we were watching the comparison between the Mavic and the Red on a huge movie theater screen with a professional 4k projector. Especially if somebody did some more extensive grading on the footage, like they usually do in big movies. I do like the Mavic though. To be honest what I notice is that you did more cinematic moves and closeups with your experience Hollywood setup. And you follow the truck at a far vertical distance with not swing movements. The quality in the air as far as video goes I see no life changing difference between either the red or the movie. Video quality would make more of a difference on the ground, where you would use DOF and see the true dynamic range of the camera you choose. On the ground I use GH5 and in the air I use both Phantom 4 and Mavic 2 pro.... We have to remember it’s about story not expensive equipment. And no shade, but working in Hollywood for 9 years is kool but so is being independent and following your dreams through with ever equipment you choose.

@@christianostmo "to be honest what I notice is that you did more cinematic moves and closeups with your experience Hollywood setup. And you follow the truck at a far vertical distance with not swing movements." Well exactly. Have you tried doing these moves and close-ups from a car at 40 mph with a Mavic or Phantom? It's fucking impossible. The lens is a super wide angle, he was probably flying the Mavic at the exact same distance to the car than his Alta 8 setup. Also getting the perfectly smooth swing-around shots of a fast moving object with perfect framing is impossible with the Mavic. You could try and use object tracking or any of the other computerized helpers with the Mavic, they might get you a little closer to it, but you are never going to be as versatile and quick to react as with a 2-person setup and a 360° gimbal and a zoom lens.

Shoot Luck Gaming he’s really not comparing a pro drone to a “pro drone” but rather comparing the cameras on them for one particular purpose. Its a very niche video. For my purposes I use an inspire 2, an air 2, and a phantom 4 rtk with multiple payload options for site analysis they work due to the ease of the ease of flight and driving between nearby sites so it has to be quick and mobile. Search and rescue is ideal with the air 2 because of the flight time and ability to whip around really quick but I rarely have jobs like that so roi also factors in. I just bought the Mavic 2 Pro for my KZbin channel, in fact the quality is almost too good. My brand new $1,200 laptop struggles to play the video in full resolution and I have to reduce the quality to get the file size down to a reasonable upload size. Also, I do use two operators, one person is a full time spotter to warn of dangers as you fly. Also, the jumpy controls can be real smooth with an experienced operator, just takes time to get really good. And the smaller drone can run circles around the bigger drone at slower speeds, much more manueverable.

I shot on Prison Break in Africa and the drone team for that show used basically your same setup except flew the Alexa Mini. All of this talk about the Mavic Pro 2, Phantom 4 Pro or even the Inspire, those are really cool consumer drones that can do a lot. But those aren't the drone shots you see on TV and in features, your setup is what is shooting all of that. I have a Mavic Pro and for no budget/low budget production, they're great. But not in the same class as a real pro drone with a pro team flying.

Big Little Films technically inspire 2 and mavics (apart from the air) are all dual op comparable to varying degrees. Mavic pro (1st gen) the dual op mode is basically two controllers two live views but designed so slave controller flies and master can take over at any time like training wheels. Not even sure if one controller can adjust something while the other flies. Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom’s dual op mode is similar but it allows second controller to manage the camera independently but limited to tilt and manual settings adjustments, but every bit helps. ..I consider mavic 2 pro/zoom to be prosumer drones.. great “pro” quality but lack true pro features a. Inspire 2 allow full independent dual op. And have two camera ..and FOV for pilot that’s separate from the main camera that camera man controlling. Infact they sell camera control accessories for the cameras like zoom control, focus pull runs, and you can attach a small but useful range of lenses on the camera and they sell differant sensors and it allows full 360 degrees of rotation. They also have battery heaters built into the batteries so if it’s too cold out the batteries in auto mode can warm themselves up, and dual batteries so have redundancy. Then DjI also have Matrice series which is beyond professional grade stepping into enterprise grade.
