Many good points here - you deserve more viewers. You have a good depth of knowledge. As to Kyrgios: he took Perricard to three tie-breakers over 2 and a half hours having been away from tennis for two years. No match play. Packed arena. He's been training five hours every single day for two years. He had ANAFAB surgery to a smashed, burst ligament and was given 15% chance to ever pick up a racquet again. You question his pain? You question his resolve? No other player has taken Perricard to three sets and the guy is not just a serve bot - he's got full game. Put him up against Sinner and he's in with a chance easily. You'll have to wipe 2024 as a measure for anything. Quite frankly - the atmosphere and morale was 'toxic' all year and terminal with the doping scandals. The players were all cynical and fed up. So many retirements, injuries, disqualifications, heckling, booing, terrible refereeing, poor quality play - almost no point in playing. You look at Zverev, Tsitsipas, Meddy, Grigor - all the 'lost generation' and there's no point for them to keep playing. The young ones are uber-hyped and untried, unreliable. You're right about motivation going when you lose in the finals - Kyrgios, Tsitsipas, Berretini, Zverev, Meddy mostly, Thiem, Grigor...All that training and hope and heart and the big three kills it. Or you get constantly yelled at and discouraged for being yourself like Kyrgios and Rune. Why keep going? I hope tennis recovers from the awfulness of last year. But it may not.

Good analysis here. I really like this podcast episode but this is not a great take on Kyrgios and his desire to compete. Kyrgios is guilty of many things, but at this point in time he has already had to overcome a significant amount of obstacles to even play at this level of the sport again. He also played exceptionally well against Mpretshi-Perricard, arguably better than anyone else so far in Brisbane. Look, ultimately only time will tell on Kyrgios' likelihood to contend for the biggest prizes in the sport, but tennis is certainly more interesting when's he's back in it.

@@qualityshottennis Yes not my term - but they were a great bunch who were always down the other end of the court when the greats were winning - takes two to make a fantastic match. Takes a lot of heart for them to keep coming back week after week knowing they'll most likely meet the big guys in round four and it will be a blank wall. Miami 2017 Federer Kyrgios was the match of the century for many. You can go through the first round lists of slams that year and see what we mean about the lost generation.

Incidentally it's pronounced Brisb'n. Djokovic just lost which is sad for him but great for Reilly - reason being Reilly has just two years off with major surgery including cancer and wrist. Kei just into the semis after major surgery on wrist as well. That is great news for Kyrgios coming back from terrible injuries. It's possible. Also the wind under the wings from the crowd gave them all a marvellous boost to reboot after a terribly naff year.
