Smash Overload was such a scam that it apparently was what kickstarted the current Smash Remix project, a mod for Smash 64 that adds actual new characters, stages, items and even modes! Two of the characters from Overload are even in the game with fully unique movesets (Conker and Goemon)

I agree. That little Mario cartoon from that bad ROM hack crowdfunder WAS freaking hilarious. Know what it reminds me of? Anyone remember an early 00's Newgrounds cartoon called "Mario Twins?" I remember a really bad, unofficial sequel called "Sonic Twins" where the guy clearly couldn't act or match the odd accents from the original video. That. It reminds me of the knockoff version of a dumb early 00's internet video.

If anything, these scams (as well as Early Access) taught people ins and outs of proper game development, how long stuff tends to take, how to spot games that overpromise, etc. which in future may produce managers who actually know how stuff work and don't rush development with unreasonable deadlines. Rushed games will still happen, but hopefully less of them. Which is IMO a good thing, even if it was a painful lesson to some wallets.

I was one of the early Areal backers. The Wii U Daily investigation was what clued me in and I canceled my pledge. I hadn't thought about the campaign since then. Great find! (As an aside, I have an idea for a future Kickscammers, involving a game that has been in development hell for 9 years but is still technically not canceled. It's not the concept of crowdfunding that's the problem IMO, but how it's used by idiots and scammers to try to fund their dreams or just try to con the gullible. Personally, I see no issue with something like Patreon and have actually used it in the past when it's been very clear what's being offered for what you spend. When done right you're just paying for a service or bonus content on top of what the artist produces that's publicly available. Apart from that, it's also a useful platform for funding things for people or causes you actually know. We've used crowdfunding to help raise money for local charities or for getting presents for workmates' birthday or leaving parties. I believe they serve a useful purpose, I just think funding someone's idea for a video game isn't one of them.

The funniest thing to me about the first campaign is that in his “update video” he was straight up just using any other typical Hong Kong multicart, just taken out of its shell. Hell, I straight up have that exact cart, immediately recognizing it when he was in the menu. 😂 Mine is red with Tiny Toons and Ninja Turtles art on the label, but the games were all the exact same and same order, too.

Eh. Wolfyy7 was already extremely late to making SMRPG2 anyway. We already have SMRPG2 in all but name only- that's Paper Mario. PM went through the majority of its development with the name Super Mario RPG 2, as late as October 1999 from what I can find- less than a year from launch date. Story goes that Squaresoft didn't approve of the name- prompting Nintendo/IntSys renaming SMRPG2 to Mario Story, and Paper Mario internationally.

*For those of you who are still curious about the four characters in the Smash Overload, here's the information I have.* *Banjo* - Teamed up with Kazooie and actually made it to an official Super Smash Bros. game. Some of the other Banjo-Kazooie characters also made it as spirits you can fight against. *Goemon* - Got accepted as a Smash Remix character - Turned into a Mii Swordfighter costume (better than nothing) *Rayman* - Turned into a spirit battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate *Conker* - Also got invited into Smash Remix alongside Goemon *I for one wouldn't mind Rayman being in the next installment of Super Smash Bros.*

And then it was all over gaming news and KZbin for an entire month prior to release. Its not anywhere close to the level of absurdity as any of these, but if you need future content, maybe look into Rad Rodgers kickstarter. The game did get released, but the company behind it was completely scummy with how they handled backer rewards, including promising a physical copy of the game, only for it to be swapped out for a soundtrack CD with no prior warning except for a small piece of paper included in the box AFTER it was shipped out. This was followed by backers rightfully complaining, them promising they would produce the copies for backers, stringing them along via updates saying they would have information in "two more weeks" of their status and.....the company/rights to the game got bought up by another publisher and the creators wiped their hands clean of ever having to fulfill any more rewards or interact with backers again.
