The downfall of Super Retro Squad is actually so common in software development that it has its own name: scope creep. Whether you have really needy clients or just an overexcited team, it will inevitably spiral out of control until someone puts their foot down. If you ever want to actually finish something, you need to make an ironclad plan and don’t budge. If you have a cool idea for something to add, that’s great. Write it down and then forget about it until you’ve actually finished the original vision.

It's the same thing with artists. You always think of how your work COULD be better but if you keep trying to scratch that itch, you'll just keep moving the goal posts. It's also why you make training sketches on your spare time. If you have a specific goal in mind, there's a point where you gotta call it finished even though you know it could be improved, because everything always could be improved in one way or another. And that's why artists will never be satisfied with their work! :D

But I knew I didn't. I picked one I thought I could do and stuck with it. I wasn't very satisfied with the end result, but I wouldn't have even finished at all if I'd've changed my mind.

The Confederate Express/Knuckle Club situation reminded me of the whole Digital Homicide/Romine brothers situation where you had 2 brothers much like in the whole CE/KC situation not really caring about putting out a good product but in this one just crapping out game after game EVERY 6 DAYS (it was found out that their "games" were simply Unity Store asset flips which is HIGHLY frowned upon in the gaming community) which is ABSURDLY SHORT for a game to get developed in. It was LITERALLY LIKE changing the camera angle and boom, new game to those 2 and they took Jim Sterling to court (OR at least attempted to with I think a cool $15M lawsuit) but Jim obviously had every right to expose the Romine brothers fot the talentless hacks that they were and they had to give up. That happened back when he HAD credibility but now he is not much better than the hacks at any of these gaming urinalism outlets as he ATTACKED the Soulsborne community and demanded that Elden Ring get an easy mode. The whole CE/KC situation is that situation on a WAY millder scale but not any less shady. At least the pair behind CE and KC had SERIOUS potential UNLIKE the Romine brothers. I mean they were ACTUALLY TRYING and not putting out asset flip after asset flip after asset flip. At least you could give the CE/KC duo that.

RAW never would've worked. Not just from the scope creep, but just from the getgo. You'd need NPCs to fill the positions that players would eventually inhabit, and the NPCs would likely need to fill those roles whenever players were offline. Otherwise, someone could do some Day 1 GTA chicanery, steal all of the valuables, kill everyone else on the server, destroy the entire town and get away with it, leaving everyone else incapable of doing ANYTHING. On top of that, the amount of setup to do most of the proposed activities takes months (if not YEARS) on their lonesome for TEAMS of developers. Even if you bought systems from the asset store, you'd still need to insert them into the game cohesively and get them working properly. I could see a potential GTA clone doing maybe 20%-30% of what RAW was aiming for and needing at LEAST a few million to do so, and at least 25% of that would be simply hiring the teams of people necessary to do that much.

Or it would be a remake of the LJN version of WWF Raw that was on the SEGA Genesis/Nega Drive/32X and Super Nintendo and make it play like say Smackdown 2 or WWF No Mercy and with entrances and use either modern wrestlers or original characters.

I backed Super Retro Squad, and it was the second biggest disappointment I ever backed. (I also backed Yogventures.) It wasn't enough for me to swear off Kickstarter completely, but I completely understand why some do. In my estimation as a backer who watched everything unfold, there were two huge problems: 1) He was a decent programmer but a completely incompetent project manager. He should have started with doing the work the way he was used to, instead of finding out the hard way that managing a team is also a skill and doesn't happen automatically. 2) Without the specific constraints of combining the mechanics and characters of relatively simple existing finished games, he can't focus on what needs to be done to finish a game himself. His ego prevents him from just completing the game as originally pitched, without constantly adding unnecessary things to it. If he would just complete and ship something, he could add to it in a post-launch patch if he wanted. But he can't focus on the fundamentals long enough to complete and ship a game.

The 'game' footage of the character running around a warehouse (the last scam story) was making me queazy the way it seemed to cause everything to wobble in a very odd way...if that was real gameplay no thanks!!!😮😂

"we are making this game that's more realistic than life itself by having a bunch of diseases and stuff your character can be afflicted by, needing the get a job, you have to eat and actually digest the food and then poop etc" Me: my God that sounds horrible, I play games for fun, not to live literally as a second person with their own actual life
@Maioly2 жыл бұрын
The only game that could really use that sort of realistic body function and disease shit would be some in dept medic sim... or a scify/fantasy life sim that had magic and/or super science to mitigate it or so on.

@@RawrX32009 Actually, nevermind, not gonna mention the game I had in talked about in my now deleted comment just in case it somehow only survived by flying under Ninty's radar. Like Super Retro Squad would be, I consider it transformative enough to be fair use, but Ninty is asshole and enough money to take advantage of the corrupt legal system.

Wait. ......Confederate express? So, it's a game.... where the heroes are called the confederacy.... blue collar joes working as a delivery service.... that are all white... refereed to as "rebels".... and the enemies are "mindless goons" in hoodies and other "street clothing" with grey shadowy faces that you are supposed to shoot and kill with shotguns. Um....... I'm...... not the only one that sees this, right? ...... I would have thought people heard alarm bells with the word CONFEDERATE being in the title... but the rest is CLEARLY no accident or coincidence. This is a thinly veiled, incredibly racist game with a thin veil over it that people fell for, where blue collar white guys that proudly call themselves "the rebel race" shoot and kill hordes of unintelligent members of "the zombie race" with ashy dark skin that wear hoodies and low-income street clothes associated with thugs trying to "steal and keep them from doing their jobs". What the actual hell. Why did anyone buy this? Why did YOU buy this?!?!?

at least with Super Retro Squad being abandoned, we still have Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, a fan game that is nearing it's FULL completion, took a long time but the team stuck with it unlike SMBC's team.

I would have all funds held until the product has been made and shipped. But these sites get their funds regardless so they dont care if its a scam and the people lose their money. I know its a risk and some great stuff just fails but they could do more to protect people from scammers.
@mentalphilanthropist352 жыл бұрын
You need to pay staff to design, test and manufacture said product, that's the point of kickstarter. Otherwise you'd go to the bank and get a regular loan using said product as collateral.

The smartest cheerleader I ever met was at a bar. My buddy was desperately trying to chat her up and eventually "You seem really intelligent" came out of his mouth. She got cross and said "What have I POSSIBLY done to make you think I'm smart, jerk." I walked right over, shook her hand and said yelling at my friend was a pretty SMART move 😂

God, that GTA MMO thing. You know when the confederate trucker game guys said that the scam victims were to blame for believing the scam in the first place, that was bullshit because what they promised _was_ believable, it seemed completely within their capabilities. But _anyone_ who looked at the trailer for this stupid thing, and looked at them talking about simulating all human organs, and thought that this was legit? Those people deserved to be scammed. This is so obviously impossible from the very start.

Even if that game raw came out on time and was exactly how they said it would be it would not work. Who wants to be a factory worker in a video game? Who wants to be a bus driver in a video game? I don't even mean simulation games because for this you'd have to earn money to buy stuff and it would literally be a job. In other words somebody who works in a factory or an office would pop in a bus driving or trucking simulator game have fun with it for a few hours then put it down whereas with this it would propose you get off work go home and basically do a second job for internet currency
