D.L. explained that he was getting inconsistent paychecks since his start in stand-up, but it was a $2,000 cash deal from Martin Lawrence that made him cry. D.L. explained that he had never gotten that much cash from a deal, which was touching to him at the time.
D.L. would go on to meet with television executives later in his career, which is where he was offered the deal for his own TV show, which came with a $1 million deal. This wasn't the only good luck D.L. happened into, as he was able to become a part of The Kings of Comedy after starting out filling in on the road early in the show's conception.
