A lot of Malarkey! Although the JVC has only one chip in 4K, it is obvious that the "Optoma" has more details. And you can try to hide it with words, because it does not match you theories. But everyone can see it for themselves.

Congratulation for this very good review. I used many Projektors in the last 25 jears. I actually use a Optoma UHZ65 and tuned it with a DCI Filter by myself. The result is very similar to this review. Its a pity that the uhz65 is not more selling. The Laser-Projektor is great!! Sorry my English.

I knew this guest reviewer was biased toward the JVC when he said that the DLP chip in the Optoma was "uprezzing" from 1080p like the previous generation JVC e-shift (around 12:43). The two technologies are totally unrelated because the old JVC was optically overlapping two 1080p chips to give a pseudo 2k picture where as the Optoma flashes 1/2 of 4k followed by the other half to give a complete 4k picture. Two very different approaches with the DLP chip actually putting the full 4k of pixel detail on the screen. Generally, the blacks are similar, the color of the Theo is better, and the JVC has brighter highlights in darker scenes. Considering that the bulb brightness will greatly diminish after two months of regular viewing, it's hard not to choose the Theo over the JVC if price is a factor. That said, in the extreme dark and bright scenes, the JVC slightly edges out the Theo, but its not commensurate with the price difference.

Thank you, it is always interesting to hear feedback especially like yours. You are very accurate, it is only on the very unique almost totally black scenes that Kris brought with him that the blacks really started to show a difference. Even in the scenes we considered dark like in Toy Story 4 and other more typical movies the difference was even less that we expected. The JVC is very good but it is a lamp based projector and will be subject to both lamp brightness fall off and lamp fail anxiety.

Honestly putting a high contrast projector with amazing black levels in a room with white walls and ceiling is not ideal for testing purposes. Get some Triple back velvet on the ceiling and sidewalls. If are trying to recreate living room conditions than you should have two rooms so you can compare the impact the room has on projector performance.

I like the colour of the Theo even though it may not be "technically correct". I don't know - both seem really bloody good. Here in 'straya both would be the same price but with the JVC there'll be a warranty. But the Optoma would last much longer because of the laser, and this is a huge advantage given how many movies and stuff I watch.
@krisdeering9731
@krisdeering9731 5 жыл бұрын
Yes and No. Laser overall will last longer than a single bulb, but once you have lost the desired/needed amount of light for a specific setup, you can never get it back with the laser (I'm not aware of any manufacturers offering replacement lasers). The other side is that while laser may last a lot longer, technology moves on, so unless you are fine with the tech available in the laser now to last you years upon years with no looking back, the longevity of the product is rather useless. This projector is already outdated simply from its HDR capability, as demonstrated repeatedly in person and in the video. And soon the JVC's tone mapping will be as well. HDR in projection is still in its early phases. It should only get better, but this projector will not. The video also doesn't mention the issues you will have with anything that is NOT wide color gamut/HDR, as the filter they put in place will always expand the gamut. That means content that is not wide color gamut will be artificially expanded and some might find that displeasing or garish. Just things to consider.

Overall the JVC was the clear choice with color accuracy and of course the blacks. The question I have is how much lamp brightness is lost after 300 hours on the JVC and will that affect the performance? The cost of the bulb from what I have found so far is $892.50. One other question is does the JVC have a sealed system like the Theo-Z65? A lot of dust inside a projector is not a good thing. A question for Ted Bollinger is if you tune out some red in the Z65 will that correct the skin tone or will that mess with other settings?

So I'm newbish in this field, so an education would suffice for me here. What exactly is the point of comparing two projectors that are configured to show colors differently from eachother? I can understand comparing the clarity and brightness and black levels, but as far as color pop, can't either of them be calibrated to look like the other in a Given scene?
@tedbollinger3306
@tedbollinger3306 4 жыл бұрын
The projectors are both configured and calibrated to show their best and most accurate colors. When it comes to the new 4K UHD color standard (BT2020) however no current projector under $100K can display 100% of the BT2020 color. One of the key costs related to the selling price of the projector is how wide the color gamut is and how close it can come to the new color standard. If you compare the cost of the JVC NX5 for example to the cost of the JVC NX7 there are really only two significant differences. One is the wider color capability of the NX7 and the other is the level of deep blacks the projector can achieve. The JVC NX7 is what we consider the highest quality lamp based projector currently on the market. We were able to achieve an even wider color gamut than the NX7 with the Theo UHZ65 and it uses a solid state 20,000 hour lazer for its light source. Although it cannot quite equal the black levels of the JVC on all scenes we feel that by comparing it to the very best would be the best way to show how it does compare. We of course recommend you see this comparison in person when possible and make your own decision when that is a possibility for you.

As noted by TVS, the difference in person is FAR more obvious than it is on this video. In some cases the difference in person was DRASTICALLY different than what you are seeing in the video, and that isn't even taking into account the limitations the room was already bringing to the JVC. They are similar in content that would be similar across almost any projector out there. They are vastly different in the cases where the performance of the JVC would be expected. A Ferrari going a steady 55 mph probably isn't that different than a Prius at a steady 55. It is when you start pushing the boundaries that performance differences become very obvious.

@@vagomaniac But content is rarely only "55", especially with movies. People act like it is only a few super dark movies that benefit from higher contrast, but in a controlled home theater, that is just not even close to true. But even outside of the dark stuff (because we barely watched any, and the room was already working against the JVC), the Theo was coming up short. Tone mapping was hardly close at all, even with easy stuff. Again, having been in the actual room, I can't think of a single sequence where the benefits of the JVC's tone mapping, accurate color and contrast weren't blatantly obvious. The still photos were probably the only real exception. With movies it was far more obvious. Remember, we also looked at a lot more content than what you see in the video.

The JVC does have a very high quality image. There is no question that the JVC DLA-NX7 has better blacks and excellent color. The Theo-Z65 also has very good color and in a side by side in person the comparison is very close. As to the life of DLP technology the chip is rated at over 100,000 hours and in almost all cases will outlive the useful life of the projector.
