I tested these 2 side by side in a shop to connect with my Yamaha Reface Keyboard. Sony was my choise by far (300%). The Sony had much more dynamics while the JBL sounded a bit harsh, too compressed....

tbh, Sony XB20 with IPX5 rating is decent, splash-proof. If you want to bring it for pool party, no one would want to submerge the speaker underwater, cause it reduce the sound energy when it escape from liquid to air. In addition, since the JBL soeaker tight seal nylon blocked 60-70% of the volume, submerge it in water will reduce the volume further. Anyway, I never use JBL speaker before and own a XB20, I bring to a pool to play water sport, I let it float on the floating board. The speaker accidentally fall into the pool and submerged, and survive after 30 second submerging in the pool, anyway it can float on water JBL is water proof feature will be useful if you going to swim when you ear will be submerged in water, you can submerge it in water and you can hear it (but not as clear on surface).

In this case Sony beats JBL. Your conclusion doesn't seems right to me. Even both speakers are set on same volume, Sony is much clearer and louder. Plus there's still bonus of Extra Bass mode. It's always nice to have an option, so hearer can set sound individually, according to his taste or type of the music.

Ростислав Зубко I just bought the xb 20 and it sounds great. With extra bass on it doesn’t sound quite as clear, but if you turn that off it’s sounds crisp and clear. I still thing Bose has the best sounding speakers, but those are overpriced to this Sony is great for me

Picked up the XB-20 just an year ago. Great and clear HI-s and MIDs. Deep and loud bass. I usually use it only with Xtra bass on cause it sounds better for me. I listen hardbass, rock, electronic, and heavy metal. It's portable durable and sounds amazing! Definitely recommend it to you.

went to the Bestbuy to test both, at 50% volume JBL deeper base, cleaner highs, Sony deep bass, mids & highs balanced, at 100% volume JBL bass good, highs became harsh sounding, Sony bass lowered, mids & highs was more balanced and louder. So JBL if your listening between below 75% volume for bass and clarity, but Sony if you want 100% volume for balanced louder volumes.

The soft power buttons of JBL Flip model start becoming a problem if you have used the speaker for sometime. Eventually they wear out I had problems even to start the speaker. In addition, the battery wore out after an year. The buttons in JBL are major design flaw if you want to continue using the speaker for over an year. I'd go for Sony

I just bought the Sony, but going by this video I have to agree with the reviewer on the JBL being more balanced. The JBL sounds more natural. The Sony high end is too "bright" and overpowering. Those using this video to pick the Sony... louder speakers will almost always be preferred in listening tests. You must match the output levels for it to be a fair test. JBL wins here and with that said I might be sending my Sony back for a refund.

Tony Stark I kept the Sony. After more listening it's pretty good especially for the $50 I paid for it. It gets quite loud for it's size without distortion. I'm satisfied with the purchase.

Too add, the Flip 4 is really portable, water resistant up to 1.5 meters, and you can link up to 100 or more together... not that I ever would, though plan on getting the next version of the Xtreme to mate my 2 Flip 4s to. I find their sound very good for their size and money. Amazing value!

for me jbl is much better even in a outdoor used... i have this two speakers that you compered... sony has a good sound inside my room but everytime i am going outside i always bring my jbl flip 4 because it has a much louder and clearer sound outside than to my sony xb20...but now i always using my jbl flip 4. the reason is... it has a lot of sounds to hear like the natural sound of acoustic...sad to say my sony xb20 is on the rest at the box for about a months now....for me i think there is a different ways to used them...maybe... but jbl flip 4 win...
