Agreed. Sounds like this DM intentionally advertised his game the way he did *specifically* to attract the kind of players he did, the way he worded the AD, streamed it on Twitch, and then immediately flipped around and forced the one thing he wasn't supposed to even allow. @@flaredesel3425 Yeah, me too (actually typing this out during one such break). This sounds like some shitty attempt to "trigger the woke" or something on DM's part, and while I've called out overly excessive political correctness, this isn't it. This is the pearl-clutching of an sjw saying "all games are sexist, racist, and need to be fought". One, they joined up on the premise that they _wouldn't_ be dealing with certain themes, and while going into a public place/forum/etc and expecting them to tailor the platform to your needs just out of fear of being made upset is unreasonable, that's not what happened here. they were brought into what they were informed in advanced _was_ a place already tailored to their wants and needs and were tricked. Secondly, even without a pre-existing agreement that things like this shouldn't be done to your characters, I think 99.999% of people playing TTRPGs go in expecting their characters *NOT* to be raped, and that is a damn-reasonable expectation! If someone tried that shit with my character, I'd be on the warpath! Now, if a DM wants to explore darker themes à la GoT, and they ask in advance and everyone agrees to it, then, whatever their table, not mine - not my monkeys, not my zoo. This though...this is unjustifiably creepy and needlessly dickish. Fuck DM and Fuck Rando (though, I suspect Rando might just be DM's alt account as a few other commenters here have theorized)!

I have not experienced any traumatic levels of sexism and have never been sexually assaulted, but I feel for these women a lot. This DM needs to rot in a fucking prison for the rest of his life, and tbh I would be perfectly fine if his cellblock mates learned he did what he did, and he ended up not alive the next day. I wish there was someone to help them realise they should have all just left the second he called them "wet holes" I hope this sort of situation where people EXPECTED TO BE SAFER THAN USUAL FROM SEXISM and literally got the opposite never happens again, but it probably will sadly. This all screams "potential rapist".

This is a real encounter in Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and the "nobles" in question are supposed to insult the players, but not in the way DM chose to do it. The "nobles" are supposed talk shit about their dirty clothes and "low-birth" and do it under their breath in a not directly confrontational way. They purchase all the rooms and laugh at the party having to sleep in the stables. If the players choose to fight it is revealed that they are actually assassins in disguise. Nowhere does it mention making the players strip, nowhere does it mention sexual assault. DM is a garbage person, sex doesn't belong in D&D (especially if one of the players is a minor, yikes!) at all unless everyone agrees before hand, rape doesn't belong anywhere, ever.

I was wondering if someone would manage to surface a plausible source. The "it's a real module" excuse was weird, as blatantly lying about something easily fact-checked would be a strange move. It's crazy how someone can take such a simple encounter and make it so much worse, yet still somehow believe (or at least claim to believe) that they haven't done anything wrong. And the players started by giving the DM the benefit of the doubt even, he could have said "my bad, I see how that made you uncomfortable, I'll be more careful next time" but no. I have been DM for 46 years. My campaign is dark, sometimes horrific, riddled with sexism, racism, and all manner of "ism's". But they are all plot points and not tools to be weaponized against players. That darkness is written into my campaign to bring out the qualities in the players and their characters. To let their virtues shine, their integrity stand stalwart like a bastion of hope, and their efforts to look monumentally heroic. There is a point where ANYTHING you do as a DM can easily cross a line. The trick is to recognize the warning signs and pull back the reigns. I and my players are a team, concocting a wonderful story. No one should ever walk away from the table and feel so shaken that it affects them personally. If that happens then something has gone wrong, terribly wrong. I think that the players in that group should have stopped the game when that line was crossed. There is no dishonor in doing that. The covenant was clearly transgressed upon. They should have ended it right then.

Grappling works Str (Athletics) vs either Str (Athletics) or Dex (Acrobatics) except when done by a creature with a specific pining mechanic (like an adult dragon) where the DC is predetermined for a save instead. "D&D is a harsh place" No. No it's really not. It's whatever the party decides it to be. My campaign replaced the Death Saving Throw system with an injury system to deliberately make it harder for PCs to die. This makes scenes where players almost die more impactful because it doesn't happen too often, and slowly degrades PCs by use of debuffs caused by physical and mental stress from their line of work. Not every game has to be a grimdark rape fest where PCs are dying left right and center. This game is probably going to end with most of the PCs and important NPCs alive but retired, because that's what the party wants.

To people out there: - If you feel uncomfortable with what's happening at the table you're on your right to speak it up. - If nobody will do anything to fix it, or mock up a fix that is actually worse, you're on your right to leave. - Nobody has the right to make you feel uncomfortable. - D&D is meant to have fun, if you're not having fun, then it is likely because someone is screwing things up. If there's no way to fix it, then it's perfectly fine to leave and find a new group to play with. - If someone comes at you after you left to guilt you on your choice to leave, block them. You owe them nothing. You did something that is perfectly right. You prioritized your own sanity and mental health by avoiding that which made you uncomfortable. I've had the displeasure of playing with some somewhat awful people. And the luck of finding some awesome people to play with. I've been both on the player side and the DM side of the table. Only once I've delved into really dark things such as rape and torture, but it was as part of a plot, at the height of the campaign, and it was not directed to the players but to npc's, who had arrived at the altar of an old deity who was demanding a sacrifice in exchange of saving the village, and the deity was using its power to show them what was going on as a ways to lure them. And I avoided by all means to describe it, it was simply "you can see this bunch of soldiers raping and killing the villagers, you can hear their cries and sorrow" and that was it. And that was enough to make some of my players uncomfortable (who told me after the game, and i apologized), and minutes after that scene they had succeeded in awakening the power of a deity and had gained the power to come back and save the remaining villagers and kill each and every single one of the offending soldiers. (Also, I did warned it was going to be a rather dark and grim game). I've never seen any GM force players into anything sexual like that. None of the games i've played had anything like that. And even the one game that had something sexual on it, it was previously agreed on and was 100% consensual and everyone was okay with. This? what this guy did? is wrong, is not part of D&D, should never be part of any campaign. You simply do not put your players in such awful situations. Much less without previously talking it with all of them and having their consent to it. And again, if you ever are in a D&D game and you are being thrown into this kind of bullshit, just leave. Those awful people don't deserve you, and there's plenty of great people to play with. Don't let them mark you with an awful experience, give them the finger and look for a group that will give you wonderful games. Please take care of yourself, I wish you all great campaigns full of fun and fond memories.

The whole "it's a part of an official encounter/module" aspect has me equally parts disgusted and intrigued, and I admit I half believe it, because I remember doing an encounter eerily similar to that when I went to Adventurers League way back when. Virtually identical setup, party trying to get rooms at a roadside inn when they're too tired to continue traveling, jackass nobles/assassins much more powerful than us taunting, owning all the rooms, the whole nine yards. The only differences: 1. It happened in Hoard of the Dragon Queen. 2. The taunts/insults were much more tame and family-friendly (as you'd expect from an official D&D module/campaign) 3. The losing fight that ensued between my party and those assassins was actually lethal (party members falling unconscious, death saves, etc) until my DM pulled the "barkeep/owner is a retired adventurer with a flaming longsword" card to save us. My personal verdict (and long story short) on the matter: The bad DM did technically use an official encounter from a published module/campaign, but heavily corrupted it into whatever that perverted mess it became was.

This exactly. Almost anyone who knows D&D knows exhaustion is just about DM shorthand for "seriously don't do this" due to how absolutely crippling and snowbally it can be. Even if the NPCs were supposed to be fought I'd argue the DM shouldn't have held that over the player's heads.
@FruitH.
@FruitH. 3 жыл бұрын
@@aegisScale Never taunt the players into a fight they simply cannot win. Not just that, but one you won’t even let them win, regardless of if they come up with good ideas or roll well. No saving throws to resist things are lame. Grapples count as attacks and the dm still needs to roll, even then, they can normally be resisted with a contested roll. This reminds me of the other video he did where the dm just rolls an investigation check for literally every single guard to find the players hidden weapons during their star wars campaigns. That’s like 50 guards or whatever? Of course one is going to succeed! DMs our there, don’t just play to feel like you “won”play to tell a fun and interesting story your players are gonna remember for years to come! As a dm of nearly 2 years, not a long time sure, but more than enough to know this: If I, or anyone else as a DM wanted you to lose, or for you character to die, as a dms word is pretty much always law, the dm could simply say a giant rocks falls on you and you take 432 bludgeoning damage. Or a lightning bolt hits you for 74937 lightning damage. Or you just have a heart attack and instantly fall to zero hit points and have to roll death saves. There’s literally no point in dnd if the dm plays to just, kill the players I guess. Unless everyone going in to the game is fully ready for that kind of experience and has a bunch of character sheets lined up, like how i’m pretty sure the tomb of annihlitation is if i’m not mistaken, then it’s not even remotely okay or fair in any way to do anything along these lines to your players. Give them what you advertised, nothing less! In dnd campaigns i’ve been in over the years, when the players , myself included, come across an asshole or racist, not only are they always a bad guy, but we beat them! Even if the fight was hard, like if they were a powerful warlock or something! Honestly I think the only thing you can taunt your players with that’s also dangerous is like a powerful item or secret mission or something along the lines. Not some shithead at a bar who’s actually secretly an assassin and his 6 assassin friends all hiding behind the guise of a noble. This is less “haha, you’ve been fooled! now we fight!” and a lot more “i’m going to taunt the players into a fight they think they could all win and then reveal that they actually have zero chance of winning, then sexually assault all of them to the point where they LITERALLY consider suicide as a better alternative to this!” Like holy SHIT. Anyways, I hope someone was enlightened or whatever from reading my rant

Going to be honest. I've started a game similar. I WANTED them to be tired cause I needed them to pass out and wake up elsewhere. Mostly because I needed them to meet the cult they were going to be butting heads with the entire damn game, and again they went into the bar. But that's where it ended in similarity. I just had their drinks drugged and the bar tender and one of the patrons join the cult. It was a cult that was trying to open the Abyss for the Eldritch horrors that were the obyrith, and I figured it would also be the best way for them to align with the Paladin Order I had created as well as shoe horn my own NPC (Cleric/Ranger who was secretly a high lvl Angel meant to direct the flow a bit) in their party. Also, unsurprisingly, there is no sexual assault/harassment in the original scenario, and also it doesn't appear at all in Descent into Avernus. So, DM's just a lying, sexist piece of shit all over.

Seriously, even if the assault was justified, the 'offer' of being left alive ONLY if you strip your KO'd companions is just gross and shady as hell, considering they are not awake to object to anything. And then the field of mushrooms??? You can't convince me this is anything but trying to put these ladies into his hand-crafted sexual fantasy.

I understand Dnd or other TTRPGs will have triggering topics, the RPG world can't be all sunshine and rainbows, but i think it's also important to talk with players after or before a game if possible to make sure there isn't certain things that might make them uncomfortable. I hope this makes sense, I don't want to make you mad with my opinion, I just feel that way because as someone who has had my own issues at home, going and playing Dnd helped me escape from all that, so I guess that's why I consider it a safe space.. at least in terms of environment anyway.

@@jubilantwolf9798 No worries, i'm not going to get upset about your opinions, I personally think the game overall has to be a fun experience for everyone at the table but that doesn't mean nothing uncomfortable can ever happen, momentary discomfort can be very enjoyable if it's followed by a release afterwards, clearly that wasn't the case in the video, that was just an asshole DM who went out of his way to pull the rug out from under his players who he lured in to his game under false pretenses. For examples of what i mean when it comes to discomfort being enjoyable just look at horror movies etc. lots of people find those enjoyable exactly because they cause momentary discomfort, but in those cases the discomfort is expected and people go in knowing they're going to potentially be uncomfortable during the experience at times. "D&D isn't a safe space." Yes it is, that's exactly what it is, it's a safe space from reality. And if you make a game with the explicit intent of not including sexualised violence you can very easily not include it. I have played in a few campaigns and never had to deal with sexualised violence to anyone, male or female no matter the gender of the player. Not to mention that in my latest game which is an all male group one of the first things we agreed on was absolutely no rape, sexual assault or anything like that. It's not that hard, and you shouldn't need to say it. it should be a given that those things are kept out of the game,

Yeah I've been playing for 3 years, typically 2+ campaigns at a time and never have i experienced a situation revolving around sexual harassment, nor have I found a situation where the inclusion of sexual violence would improve the story in any way. Closest I ever came was my first session, we were baited into a fight by a rowdy bar guest who made racist remarks to our centaur, and we subsequently punched a literal hole through their face and got away with it because it was an "anything goes" type of town. That was also designed as a plot hook for me and that character's player to get used to each other (we had a shared backstory) as well as loop us into the main plot with a bang. It was also extremely validating to punch a racist so hard he burst.

The town has an inn, a brothel, a market, and a church, what do you want to do?" The very first time I played with a new group that was not my family members, I made a female character (because I am female), and I was seventeen (both me and the character). The groups members were all men who were 25-35. In the first adventure, we found a piece of armor that only I needed. The character that found it gave it to me. When we camped for the night, he casually mentioned that he was going to have sex with my character. When I responded with shock, he said, "That armor isn't free.". I said, "Fine, I won't take it.". The GM then said that I was intimidated by the guy and just went along with it, because I was afraid of him. There were no rolls. He then changed the subject and moved on with the game, while everyone laughed it off (besides me). I let the character die in the next session and made a new character that was male. I thought that this was just how groups went. I played male characters after that for about twenty years, because male sexual abuse was never an element in the groups I played in, but female sexual assault was almost a joke. It really affected my whole view on roleplaying with people and had a lot of other bad experiences that just reinforced the feelings. Now I only play with groups where the GM listens if someone has an issue with something they don't want in games or want to avoid. I have PTSD (and had it at 17 when this happened) partially from sexual assault. It isn't fun for me to roleplay it. I know that sometimes it is hard to avoid it, but it is different when it is inserted intentionally. I also had an experience as a GM where a player tried to force me to have his character (He was playing a teen girl.) raped. His character was a priestess from a secluded temple that knew nothing about men, before the game started, but she had seen men and had them in the group for a few weeks in game by this time. He still had his character walk naked into a camp of enemy soldiers, because "She wouldn't know that she was putting herself in danger. * wink, wink *" I tried everything I could to avoid it, but every time I would try, he would actively try to force a rape to happen. Eventually another player rushed in and rescued her. This player was awful, but he was also one of the group of friends, so it was nearly impossible to avoid having him in the game. This was just one of the terrible incidents with him, but it was certainly the worst.

Then when I text the players after the session to schedule session 1, those who voted yes will simply not be receiving a text. I simply cannot in good faith allow people in my game that think it's appropriate for any one player to have the ability to change the game at their leisure. If the majority of the players have a problem with the game's content or the action of a player, then changes can be made, but it's incredibly stupid to give any single player that power. Using me as an example: D&D games that feature explicitly described sexual themes or actions make me extremely uncomfortable. If I want, I can politely ask the other players to tone it down, but if the entire rest of the table is okay with it, I can either deal with it or leave: I shouldn't have the ability to shut down an aspect of the game when everybody else is enjoying it.

I'm a writer. Well, I write. I like stories, sometimes dark ones with harrowing scenarios and themes, possibly even gruesome things - in an attempt to draw attention to how awful some people can be - but I have still never, ever, EVER felt the need to include themes of sexual assault! Slimy-ness from gross/creepy antagonists? Maybe. Implied, but unspoken trauma for select character backstories? Occasionally. But I have never written out a scene involving blatant sexual assault, feel no need to, and have tremendous fear of those that do. When it comes to DMing, I like to think of creative ways to portray the scum of whatever world we're in, but I want to make characters/scenarios that the PCs will get pissed off at, not characters/scenarios that will trigger the actual players. That is why I always check ahead of time to see if any players wish to exclude any themes, such as abuse, sexual assault, slavery, grooming, heavy gore, anything that would potentially keep them from enjoying themselves. The reason I don't cut those out by default is because some people want to play the Angel of Vengeance, who finally gets to live out the fantasy of giving those slavers, rapists, and abusers exactly what they deserve.

And I'm guessing they've learned, through experience, that they'll be pursued and continually harassed by people (chiefly men) whom they have rightly told off for harassing them. And so they're trying to soften their words in the hope of protecting themselves from that further harassment. And like you said, it still didn't work. Yeah. Granted, those experiences happened a looooong time ago, but it always stays with you, and is definitely the main reason why more girls aren't as openly into 'nerdy' stuff. You can only be scared away from a comic convention so many times... :(

I know I'm a year late, but this actually is a real official encounter in Hoard of the Dragon Queen (apparently, I haven't run it myself, but I looked it up because I ran Descent Into Avernus and didn't remember this encounter at all). Whether or not it's supposed to be sexually charged, I have no idea, but apparently the assassins are supposed to rob the party of everything they own, including their clothes, and kick them out of the inn. That's not the point of the video, and I agree with everything else you said, this DM is definitely scum for the way he ran it.

I just looked up this encounter. It's a Hoard of the Dragon Queen roadside encounter (p36). In those 4 paragraphs of encounter description, there is absolutely no mention or suggestion of this gross misogyny or of stripping the characters. The encounter was unintentionally over-levelled due to it being written while stat blocks were still in flux during dnd next. It has since been errata'd to use CR 3 Veterans vice CR 8 Assassins.

The encounter is in the module. It plays a lot different then this though. The idea is there’s some arrogant dicks in this inn looking for a fight but their goal is to beat somebody up and make em sleep outside. I do think an older version mentioned stripping but it was of weapons and armor, not nudity. (It’s very early level so you aren’t losing good shit yet) The module even says that if you don’t pick the fight somebody else there might, they aren’t even singling the players out. Meta it’s a lesson to new players that they should not necessarily pick every fight because they are not the top dogs in these parts, there is plenty stronger and meaner out there. It’s not the best constructed imo, but this asshole turned it into something completely different.

And, while there is such a thing as overly sensitive people who could benefit from growing thicker skin, defending something that oversteps people's boundaries with some variation of "This is just how D&D is" means that you are a dick. DM had us start the campaign thus: our party has been ambushed, seized, and raped (anally) by a gang of towering ogres. We were able to escape without any belongings, gold, or clothes for that matter. We then improvised some leaves to hide our hides and made it to a tavern. So, yeah. But we were all friends and men, so we didn't think too much of it. I mean, more than the usual "oh fuck, really man? that's nasty shit". This is what gets me. ANYONE who plays D&D long-term know how to read DM cues, whether it's knowing that the fact that they mention the light fixtures means those fixtures should be investigated, or the fact that the DM has a name ready for an NPC means they've been prepped and are somehow important. Any player knows that "You could do this, but you would all suffer X consequence," is a cue that this is not the course you're supposed to take if you want to participate in the adventure. Basically, the DM TOLD the players that they were supposed to confront the NPCs by signaling that the other option was discouraged by the gameplay mechanics. Not the players' fault at all that they misread the difficulty of the encounter, even without all the gross, harassy stuff.
