One thing about Jonathan and the other folks at GGG is you get them in an interview and they're almost like kids who are just so excited to share their project with everyone. Sometimes you can see him just trip over his own words because he's torn between sharing everything and trying to let us find out for ourselves. The real indicator was at Exilecon when they just sat down and dicked around by slowing all projectiles to 0.1 or spawned multiple bosses to fight each other and looked at the crowd and was like "Yeah? Yeah!"

Tbh in retrospect the open world in D4 was just a fundamental mistake. So much dev resources must have gone into it and it's a total damp squib. They just didn't know what makes the Diablo-like genre great and tried to slap an open world on it. GGG really know what people love about this genre.

Remember .. in poe .. the goal ..mainly is not to reach 100 :) i have 2k hours in poe .. and have only 1 guy that never went that far most of them are between 90-95 There is so many highlight points to reach in poe .. that i dont even feel bad if i dont reach max lvl .. you can kill bosses you never killed ... get new build working ... or reach new other achievements :)

I'm so thankful a MODERN game is introducing a consequence to failing/dying. I.e. in this case you lose the map. I for one think it's a GOOD thing having consequences for failing, because it makes me far more keen on building good characters and gives a bigger adrenaline kick when playing. It's not comparable to "just play hardcore" because I don't enjoy the idea of 1 fail resetting all levels/restarting a character, but I do enjoy a consequence for dying.

That bit with the variant nodes in the passive trees is so interesting. If you were a sorceress and a node you wanted gave you 8% spell *and* minion damage, it was enough to turn players off from specing the node. So by creating a second variant for of the node for just the sorceress, they made it so players will take it now. Goes to show you how much psychology is in video game design. Really fascinating. The reason diablo numbers can go into trillions is because instead of doing actual game design and providing players with meaningful gameplay changing itemization, they resort to numbers go up design way too fkn much (ideally you should have every skill and legendary effect etc to have a gameplay modification with minimal number changes), which is fkn lazy and not exciting to players and leads to those issues.

So sorcs didn’t choose the node because it has minion dmg on it, it was chosen because because we thought since there’s a + to 2 dmg types, and it was effectively halving the dmg of another node that would only have 1 dmg type. That’s just how the monkey brain worked.

He mentioned you are able to reset the Atlas. I am a little worried that, once people figure out like juicy/optimal biome combos, this could result in "atlas fishing" where you just keep reseting until the area around your starting region is more optimal. I hope there is some kind of cost to reset, like you lose atlas passives or something. Make reseting the atlas one of the last things you want to do unless you absolutely have to, such as bricking it. I don't want atlas fishing becoming the meta.

He mentioned resetting wouldn’t be free, it’s only free if you completely mess up and die on every single node and you get stuck, so then it resets all your progress. Also the Atlas is individual progress, so people resetting it to farm something specific is not an issue. It is a single player progress activity that can be played with others, but if you just reset it over and over, it doesn’t affect anyone else except yourself. There should be no issue with people wanting to constantly reset it if they find an optimal route or farming strategy. As far as it becoming “meta”, you’re not obligated to follow it in any way, so I wouldn’t worry about that if I was you.

You should be ok dying a lot if you have those kinds of issues. Atlas resets if it's bricked so you can start over again and upgrade your gear before doing the same thing again.

@@CCSplinters I am ok dying. I've never beaten an uber boss, I'm ok with that. But now, unlike PoE 1, you can die on a map and get absolutely nothing from it, because you can't go back in and pick up loot from the ground. I think it's going to feel bad, and I don't think it's just the people with accessibility issues that it's going to feel bad for.

So refreshing seeing people who are passionate about gaming and in love with what they're doing speak to the public and share some fun facts and details. I don't know when the trend of hiring PR people who know nothing about the game to talk about it ever started, every answer you get ends up being just twisted and unrelated to what gamers actually care about. Even worse is what Blizz did - had developers talk about the game, devoid of any life and joy, while also not knowing sht about how the game SHOULD and WOULD work. Jonathan is knowledgeable and is giving us clear pros and cons about systems, and their thought process, while D4 devs were like "yeah, we did this because this is the best" and their thought process was basically "let's copy D3 and immortal, it seemed to work so it'll work here too".

Never played Diablo series before, closest to this type of game style I have played is Baldur's Gate 3 which I have been truly enjoying and love for playing it 1st time. I saw Diablo 4 reviews and gameplay and wasn't too impressed, but just seen trailers and gameplay of this and I bought gsme for Xbox SX, looks great graphically and far more content filled. Hope I'll enjoy it! 🙏🤞

Jonathan loves challenging us and making difficult fights, if the bosses can't be modded, it's probably for a good reason. I can see the campaign bosses being "Elder" difficulty from PoE1.

I really hope they add a currency item that lets you retry on a map type, especially if you end up cutting yourself off from optimally getting to where you want to go. And also so you can potentially re-run really good map types with all the right modifiers if it's the case that completing it once locks you out of running it forever.

I really hope they keep the XP penalty. Having to change my build and ''get gud'' was the climax of my experience with PoE. Its such a good way to try new builds and ''test'' them. Once you know you have the skills, you can see what is lacking in the build.

Xp always felt too much to me. Not only am I losing my map, currency spent on the map, juicing currency, and time, I am also losing xp, which also equates to even more time and future power lost.
