Just like you I had a 200. Now in my garage and in front of my van is a 2021 Y62 and I couldn't be happier. The explanation for the better fuel economy is called technology compared to the 200. The 5.6 has variable valve timing and variable valve lift plus a seven speed auto which results in just loads of horsepower and better engine braking. Its biggest down fall is its performance as drivers cant resist to press the accelerator to hear and feel the big naturally aspirated V8 go. But as an owner that has now come to drive it sensibly as you mentioned you should, I now get 12.5l/100. The 19l/100 you mentioned is typical of a 200 driver as they cant believe the bang for buck when first driving the Y62.

@@johngunning2123 hey John I just returned from northern NSW after three months in my Y62 towing our 3.5 tonne caravan. I could get the fuel economy as low as 15.8ltr/100. The highest I recorded was 16.8ltr/100 through the hills. As I mentioned I did have a LC200 and I also got 20ltr/100. The other point to mention is the power difference. The y62 has 300kw and you certainly know when you hit the hills. It makes towing a dream.

I had LC200 before Y62. Honestly, even without load, LC200 drinks more than 62 while doing school run plus bit highway (about 20%). I just don’t understand why so many people keep saying how thirsty is the Patrol. While It’s not… both of them are not some eco friendly car by any means.

Best comparison I have ever seen! I used to favour Patrols back in the 80' sand 90's. Went to Landcruisers in 2000 (100 series petrol) and then 200 series (V8 diesel) in 2013, which I still have and absolutely love. Recently looked at the 300 series as an update, but I don't like them. by the way, I tow a 3000kg van. Like you, I am very surprised with the outcome of the comparison. There is no doubt that overall, the Patrol is the winner and especially impressed with what you can do to the Patrol with the money from the price difference. Again, I thought your comparison test was brilliant ...... except for that bloody awful, overly loud, shithouse music between the talking bits. @robmorley70413 жыл бұрын
G’day Reuben. This was the first time I’ve watched your channel. This was a well conducted honest review. There’s a vehicle that most reviewers overlook. The Land Rover Discovery 5. We have an MY19 twin turbo 3lt V6 designated the Sv6. The Sv6 makes 225kw and 700Nm of torque delivered by a full time 4WD 8-speed ZF Transmission with automatically locking centre and rear diffs. Traction control takes care of the front diff.. Our 7-seater has a payload of 864kg and tows 3500kg with a GCM of 6700kg. Your LC 200’s crawl mode was preceded by the Land Rover designed All Terrain Progress Control, basically a low range cruise control which continuously monitors the terrain adjusts traction and is equipped with Low Traction Launch. The rock, sand, etc modes of the Nissan in the D5 are called Terrain Response 2 and were first designed and used by Land Rover in the D4 almost 20 years ago. No rocket science here. In 2019, we did a 35520 “Lap” towing a 3200kg semi- off-road van.These are our fuel figures obtained in the exact same way as yours in the test. We travelled 35520km of which 22000+/- a few km was towing our beautiful 21'6"Jayco Silverline Outback weighing almost 3300kg. We had a GCM of 6400kg. In total we refuelled 106 times from the pump and 4 top ups from our jerry cans using 5285.4 litres of fuel at a cost of $8288.94 = $1.57/lt. The most we paid was $2.35/lt on Fraser Island. Our hardest travelling was the Gibb River Road where we averaged 27kph for 600km 😱 Fuel consumption on The Gibb was 17.6l/100km. Overall, our fuel consumption was excellent as we averaged 15.16l/100km. Towing we averaged 16.5l/100. Our heaviest fuel consumption was Fraser Island at 21.4l/100km, closely followed by some towing into headwinds of just under 21l/100 on 6 occasions. Our best towing was 13.0l/100 and best overall was 8.5l/100. Suspension is fully independent with self levelling airbags and there is a native sway control which keeps it feeling like a rock on the road, bitumen or dirt. Downside is that the D5 is much more expensive than the L62, but similar to a Sahara. We’re now up to 65000 km with no reliability issues. I’m in no way criticising your review. It was excellent. Please be aware there is another option. I’m so confident of our very real figures that I’m prepared to let you repeat your test with my D5 next time we’re in Qld, if we ever get out of lockdown and Anastasia allows Victorians back. Cheers. We’ve subscribed.
@dirtymuddyweekends3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your detailed message, as you are obviously very well researched in this model has anyone done a dual cab conversion on one and what’s the biggest GVM upgrade you can get fir them?
@robmorley70413 жыл бұрын
@@dirtymuddyweekends I have certainly never heard of a twin cab conversion. I’m on the Facebook Discovery 5 Owners Group - Australia with over 1000 members and also the international FB group. No one I’ve read has ever suggested it. A Brisbane Auto Engineer was doing GVM upgrades to axel capacity however, I think that is no longer legal?? It certainly wasn’t recognized outside of Qld as I asked him to do mine. A stage 2 (I hope that’s the correct terminology) would be great, but who’s gonna do the research and testing for such a limited market? I doubt that a twin cab is possible as the D5 is a monocoque with no ladder frame chassis like the Toyota’s Nissan’s and utes. This is definitely the domain of the big boys 😆 I’d love about a 500 mm extension/GVM/GCM but again no one is gonna do the research to find out if it’s possible due to the market. All that said, it’s a superb tourer. Comfortable, quiet, economical, powerful and Xlnt tow car. You never know, we might win Back In Black tomoz. Now that would be a real beast!

@@dirtymuddyweekends Yes Mate. Definitely more punchy off the line and the mid-range a little meatier. My Mechanics at Autotech in Canberra are tied up with Mustang Motorsport (my “other” addiction..) so are Dyno equipped. They did one run (I’m still on oem wheels/tyres) after install and had 180kw at all 4 wheels. They were pretty happy with that. Harrop are recommending a high flow K&N Air Filter as being sufficient due to oem air box being pretty good. So, next step is it will go back for the K&N AF and a custom tune. They did a stage one tune on my Mustang and I’m really impressed with their map. Great improvement across the whole rev range but to my mind it’s the small throttle opening usage being clean that is a great indicator of a good Map and it has that in spades.

Great video mate. Purely from a mechanical point of view, towing in an overdrive gear cannot be good long term, I understand it's not good for fuel economy not being in top gear but yeah loading up an overdrive gear isn't ideal
@martinlang9615 Жыл бұрын
I agree and I think this is one of the reasons why the LC used more fuel when it should have used less. Engine Load when towing with load and in D is very high. Injector timing and duration cycles is more at lower boost. Another thing that is not standard and will not only help fuel economy, but control with hills is an auto locking TTC (Transmission Torque Converter), it also reduces power robbing automatic fluid temperature. This means it’s better for your transmission life due to the lower automatic transmission temps. Oil life increases as a result too. Wholesale Automatics in Victoria IMO are very experienced in any vehicle used for towing. Obviously to maximise fuel economy you would “ride the waves”…that is at the hill bottoms be at max legal speed, then adjusting the throttle so that when you are at the hill crest you are down to 15-20% less than the road maximum. Having twin turbos can really suck it with higher engine loads. The biggest way to avoid these loads is a combination of riding the waves and more importantly using manual mode to keep the Diesel engine revs up which gives a higher boost but lower engine LOAD overall. I hope this makes sense. It’s very difficult to explain it any simpler. It seems counter intuitive as diesels have high torque at low revs…but when towing with a turbo diesel you need slightly higher revs than when not towing. Not sure about the LC300, but it should be the same principle. Owners need to experiment to find that sweet spot.

I previously had a 2009 ford territory GHIA Rwd and had to upgrade to tow my Magnum 8.5 (28 foot) trailer sailer with all up weight incl trailer at 2.98 ton. In MAY21 I put down a deposit on a new y62 TI and was quoted sep/oct21 delivery. As I needed a tow vehicle in between I bought a 2019 Ti Patrol, Pearl white and black interior. The wife asked what do we do when we take delivery of the new y62….with Covid and lock down I just said we will work it out as we go along. The wife loved the patrol as it drove like a car with the high view of the traffic and 360 camera can park easier than the ford territory. Then late sep21 I got the call the new one (pearl white with the beige interior) will be ready for pick up in oct21. The choice was very clear the wife’s gets the new one and we will be a two patrol family. Yes that’s right we have two white stock patrols in the driveway. The only mod is the addition of a tow bar to my Patrol. So when we go interstate take my patrol (now done 60,000kms) and keep hers in the garage (only done the shopping and school pic ups and at 4,000km). On AUS Day JAN22 drove at the speed limit from Melb 2 Sydney return with the family of four and langage and achieved 11.4L PER 100KM (better than the 2009 ford territory Ghia rwd at 13.5L 100KM). Nearly forgot when I tow the boat I get 26L PER 100kms WOW! Well this is the extra investment you have to pay for having a boat. My next trip is Melb to Hervey Bay (QLD) to do the Bay 2 Bay yacht race on 30APR with return trip of over 3,732km. That is at least 3,732/100 x 26L x $2.50 = $2,426 in petrol or nearly 7 tanks. That is the investment I am willing to safely take my boat, family and dog on holiday and give me happiness!

There are enough of them out there already who haven't the foggiest notion of what's behind them or worse...why that might be something they ought to know!!! I know you commented on the lack thereof, but that doesn't excuse their omission. Also, it may have been wise to inform the potential buyer of the lower GVM when towing a heavy van.

I love how you weren’t bias, every else does these reviews and it’s always biased and I expected nothing less but you proved us wrong with honesty. I appreciate the solid axle handling the weight better that’s true. Only 2 things, a) it’s a petrol, it’s going to rev more and use its power not torque, that’s how a petrol is designed and it will do it easily it likes to rev, so bit unfair to say it’s revving a bit high. And b), these new gearboxes like the 7 speed but particularly 8 and 10 speed, they will hunt gears that’s the whole purpose that’s it’s job, so it’s always in the perfect rev range for the speed? Bit unfair to say that’s an issue when that’s it’s job? To use all the gears. But keep it fair, issue with the patrol, it shouldn’t jump to 7th gear, the cruiser is doing the right thing and NOT using its overdrive gear as you shouldn’t tow heavy loads with overdrive gears?
@dirtymuddyweekends3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brennan, Appreciate your feedback and fair comments however 200 series owners will know it is more than just staying in the rev range, the engine has the torque but the transmission tuning was done with an emission bias rather than drive ability. The slipping of the converter not only reduces torque it heats up which reduces lifespan so tuning helps all this.

No need to reflash the trans, although it's an option, a TC lock-up kit make a huge difference to both towing performance and economy as well as engine braking. Well worth the investment. It also allows you to get 6th from 95kph and hold it longer.

The Patrol should be run on 98 not 91. It is however a credit to it that it can be run on both with no ill effect outside of power and economy. Fuel price should also be considered.

I 100% with the comments about the gearbox. It seems to be programmed for a different engine. In standard form it won’t give you 6th until you hit 116 km/h and then let off. It wants to kick down with the slightest pedal pressure and hates to lock the torque converter in 5th as well. Even around town it wants to rev the engine to 3000 rpm ion the lower gears just to keep up with normal traffic. It all seems pretty pointless to rev an engine with maximum torque between 1600 - 2600 rpm like this. I’ve had mine reflashed to improve this but it could still be much better. If anyone knows someone who can really tune the gearbox to my liking, please let us all know.
@dirtymuddyweekends3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, we agree. The lock up and gearbox tune makes a big difference to how the car drives and fuel economy. We felt with this test that we had to test it in standard form to be fair on the comparison.

Great comparison video Reuben, just a couple of important things you didn’t mention. Cost difference on both brands websites, VX Cruiser $113k, Ti Patrol $88.5k... $24.5k buys a lot of petrol OR Towbar, Airbags & Weight Distribution Hitch to turn the Patrol into a towing weapon. Also, the Cruiser is much more expensive to service than the Patrol, making that Big Lap even more costly per Km. That $24.5k just keeps growing.

Im on my 3rd patrol and I reckon there is something different in the way air is bled out of the tank or some other quirky thing when filling. I know you used the same process to fill them but there had to be a airlock or something. I can't see how the y62 used that much less fuel over only 120 odd kilometres.

Interesting though. We think it more so that the 200 used so much because they don't go into 6th gear properly.

@@dirtymuddyweekends Yeah I know what you are saying, Im just not convinced from experience that the y62 used 8L less in such a short journey. It was never full to begin with and had a air lock or maybe something funny going on with the 2 tanks. I just think something quirky like that is going on and has impacted the results maybe? I don't know about Australia but I'm in the US and just recently got a 2020 Armada. I know it's lacking some of the 4WD features that the patrol has (Like Locking Diff) but I love it. We paid $30k USD and a comparable 2020 Land Cruiser is nearly $90k USD. I can't imagine that the price difference reflects actual value between the two vehicles. probably the best review I have seen. Well done. Two questions for you. 1 Did either of these vehicles have a suspension upgrade to cope with the 320 to 350 kg tow ball download or did you drive them with a saggy rear end? 2 You used 91 petrol. Surely the patrol would do better fuel economy on 95 or 98 as is recommended. Would love to know as I am going to buy either one of these in the next couple of weeks.
@dirtymuddyweekends9 ай бұрын
Thank you for the positive feedback! Regarding your questions: Neither of the vehicles had a suspension upgrade specifically for towing. We drove them as they were without any modifications to the suspension. However, it's worth considering upgrading the suspension if you plan to regularly tow heavy loads to ensure optimal performance and safety. You're correct that the Patrol might achieve better fuel economy with higher octane fuel like 95 or 98, as recommended by the manufacturer. Using higher octane fuel can sometimes improve engine performance and efficiency, but it can also depend on various factors such as driving conditions, load, and engine tuning. Ultimately, the decision between these vehicles will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. It's a good idea to test drive both and carefully consider factors like towing capacity, fuel efficiency, comfort, and overall driving experience before making your choice.

A very interesting conclusion in my opinion. The result was a surprise to me too. We have an HDJ100R which I love. One of my mates worked for a mining company & his first company vehicle was an HDJ79R which was replaced by a V8 Diesel cab chassis, he wanted the six cylinder back because he reckoned it was a better engine then the V8. I would be interested to see a comparison between the 100 series & the V8 Patrol. The 6 cylinder petrol Patrols seemed to chug petrol, especially compared to the 4.2 litre diesels.
