its Friday and that means another quick tip or trick and today we will deal with a old trick on how to bake breads in a canteen cup .in short as a make shift Dutch oven. first we will talk of how to prepare the fire before hand. next we will talk of why foil is such a great thing to carry in your survival kits. then we will show how to mold the foil to line our cups and give us a better cooking surface to bake the bread in.
these old u.s.army canteen cups are a staple of outdoor cooking for one and everyone should give them a try.
canteen cups, army canteen cooking, canteen cup tue, cooking hacks, mess kit tips, solo cooking , using a canteen cup to make breads,

TV Dinners in aluminum trays intended for the oven took longer but the results were much better, IMO. Same with frozen pot pies.

Only ever ate half cold peas with pearl onions in the microwave TV dinners. For those that have not figured this out, this is called smoothing it. Still cooking meals around the fire but far tastier than dumping too much boiled water in a dehydrated food pouch. And those aluminum foil dishes can be wadded up in ziplock baggie to tote trash out.

I like to test cook/bake in the backyard. Helps to Figure out what you need before you head for the bush. Can take a Lot longer than you think & if you add in some bad weather you might want an alternate meal plan, but sometimes that’s the fun part.

This is kinda off topic but not completely--- Ive had cheap aluminum foil melt or bits of it dissolve over different flames AND even as a cover over tomato- based sauce ... ... of course that is where either something acidic or the flame and/ or high heat touched it... You dont want foil to be melted or a little of it dissolved into something you are going to eat... I know most people probably know this, but its just something I am very conscious of every time I use or even think of foil and food in the same thought and I think others--- especially those that havent used foil much--- should be conscious of it as well... Im new here but this is a very good and practical YT resource. Thanks

Good video! The power of planning a head of time is awesome. Another thing that you can add is how to use the dirty aluminum foil after you are done cooking as a tool or make something out of it. I personally find myself heating the foil over the fire folding it to a scrub ball and using it like a scrubber tin ball for cleaning and wood projects

I definitely am looking forward to trying this with cornbread. Couple of questions Blackie... 1) Your canteen cup is stainless steel. Is that preferred over an aluminum cup ? 2) Instead of the every day aluminum foil, could you use for the lining and cover, the heavier aluminum "pans" that goe for $2-3 that you cook a turkey etc in ? Yeah Blackie, we attended the same "school". I remember life before microwaves and instant gratification i.e. - popcorn on the stove top in the pie tin and expanding foil. There really wasn't much wrong with those days. And I'm sure you already are, but keep an extra eye open for the Alabama "Bonnie and Clyde". At a hair under 7 feet tall, I don't think he's going to be out in daylight... but who knows. Stay well !!
@asmith7876
@asmith7876 2 жыл бұрын
You can hand down that stainless steel cup to your children. I bought one used, surplus 40 years ago, used throughout 4 years in the Army, take it on every trip to this day. No telling how old it is but it will certainly outlive me.
@blackoracle69
@blackoracle69 2 жыл бұрын
i have sued the aluminum and the stainless i like it better but thats just me.. and i have thought about lining the cup with the parchment paper for baking it should work instead of foil but foil is so useful i prefer to carry it

@blackoracle69
@blackoracle69 2 жыл бұрын
yes i prefer to make a bed of coal off to the side of the main fire bring the oil up to temp first and dont be shy a bigger pan and more oil will cook better since the cool fish will lower the oil temp stop the fry action and allow the oil to soak into the fish so you want the oil at a roll and add the fish in a slow even pace as you add it to the oil hope this helps

Great idea and explanation of how to bake… but since KZbin is a visual platform, perhaps it would be better (more informative and interesting) to actually make a video showing it being done instead of a video simply explaining how to do it?
