I've used the phrase "Your Wisdom/Intelligence stat is too high to perform that action" before, but I feel like this guy's wisdom/intelligence stats are too low to try anything besides the same thing over and over.

It's never a case of being unable to stop cheating, they are just unwilling.

@@sarsapong Now there is story I've heard before. It's always super cringey.

Yeah. There is one scenario someone might actually develop a more psychologically-ingrained habit: if they felt like they were forced to do it because they were in a hyper-punishing game (e.g. being hit with unpredictable "save or die" rolls and heavily unbalanced encounters). But even then, I'm a strong proponent of "no d&d is better than bad d&d," so leaving is always advised if it's not their preferred playstyle. Lastly, there are always solutions, even if a habit does form from something like that. If someone is really affected that strongly by a bad campaign to the point they are afraid their characters will die if they don't cheat, then the solution there is always A) communicate their concerns with the DM or B) get some therapy to help kick the habit and maybe address some likely underlying factors. Main reason I say this is I used to know someone like this. They were a super nice person outside of the game, and they would never cheat in any other game, except when it came to D&D. And I strongly suspect he did it for reasons like I listed above, as the only DM we had at the time was pretty bad at telegraphing when we were approaching dangerous places.

"I guess Intelligence was his dump stat" Rather, Doge, I'd say ALL mental stats were dump stats; Intelligence to come up with better excuses, Wisdom to realize people were on to him and he should cool it, and Charisma because he had the charisma of a particularly wet clod of mud.

If Jared lies about little things that mean almost nothing, just imagine what else this guy lies about on the regular?

Lying is one thing. Serial cheating is another, gasligth and manipulation is another level of maddness. You can lie at work/free time with friends or coworkers you climb the everest mountain b yyourself and be cool and no one will call out your BS because you are the party clown.

From personal experience, I can say that cheating can be somewhat of an addiction. It can be very difficult to stop once you start. I’ve had to stop playing games that I can cheat in to prevent myself from doing it.

I'm picky about what i cheat in. If it is single player and i am not hurting anyone else? Have at it. When you have to play with others. Absolutely not. That ruins the fun of the game with others. Granted i used to use map exploits occasionally in some games. But we all did and knew how to do it and the game was never updated to fix it. And it wasn’t as if you were invincible. You could still be shot and taken out of the glitch exploit. We only did it when we got bored and you needed a partner who knew what they were doing. In case anyone is wondering. The game was medal of honor warfighter. I miss the competition we had back then. It was basically run by a number of clans by the end who all knew each her and knew all the exploits and used them against each other. Not much of an exploit when everyone knows how to do it and does it in the end, right? Everything was shared over time. We all had a lot of fun

On another note, I do think a Cleric’s Channel Divinity shouldn’t be limited as it is. Maybe tied to Wis Proficiency or Proficiency Bonus.

So 1st story - the player was not only a cheat, but most unpleasant to play with. Being rude to fellow players and now the DM's who DM him - argh, surprised the party didn't kill him off. Guess he never realized, cheating really ruins it in playing. Rolling a bad die and hoping your character will survive, or that your character will have to find a way around is part of the fun. Also, purchasing tools of course doesn't make you an expert with them. That to is role playing, you learn and progress.

Game cheaters cheat because they want to win. They don’t care about the rules, they want the reward with as little effort as possible.

I do get the annoyance at swapping weapons slightly. Id make it a bonus action or half your total movement myself. Regardless, I wouldnt argue with a DM if they wanted said rule. That being said, Jared sounds like a nightmare to deal with.
@DefectiveDictionary777 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, what I usually go with is the "if you want to swap in one object interaction, you have to drop what you're using." That way, I can still allow players the cool factor of pulling out a new weapon mid-turn, but it comes at the cost of basically writing off what they were using before for the next few rounds. Or, if I really want to up the stakes, I can have an enemy pick up or stow the weapons - though, I do make sure players are aware that things can and will be stolen from them in my games ahead of time.
@johngleeman8347 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Not all the standard rules are very fun. However if you have a suggestion for a change, you certainly don't make it in the middle of a session. That's where Cheating Charlie made his foul up.

hate to see that cheating is a plague on other games as well. I deal with cheater bots when i play pokemon not just with random raids on occasion but what we call ad mons in surprise trade where sites use bots to advertirtisements of cheating apps. It's a plague that comes with pretty much any game it seems.

"If I get kicked I'll lose all my progress!" "we'll take all your gold and items". Now tell me 5e isn't a pen and paper MMO.🤨 It's not as much of an open sore as 4e was, but good lord, if this is how people approach RPGs these days I'll just stay down here in the old school end of the pool.

People who cheat like that usually have low confidence and may be Pocket Narcissists and do this because it makes them feel big and in control, they fear that not looking cool and in control makes them look pathetic and sad so they way over compensate

Typically I’d say he’s a cheater but from this it sounds like the last group he was in was able to lay out preconceived notions of him and he never had a chance in this group, some of the issues could really be mistakes IE not understanding channel divinity and making awkward jokes. But due to the preconception these were seen as purposeful slights and I don’t think that was the real case

how you cheat at DnD? its not a video game, there are no cheats codes. its roll the dice and see, that's all it is. they using loaded dice, magnets under the table or they just laying them down to the perfect number without rolling? are they slipping the DM some money to let them do things they are not allowed to do? if someone is cheating at DND then they are being allowed to.
