DM's Girlfriend: _Knows literally everything._ DM: _Targets OP when called out._ Other players: "Hmm... Must've been the wind." With players this oblivious I don't doubt that the DM's girlfriend was the smartest politician in the group.

Yeah. I get the vibe something else was going on here. I can see one or two being clueless forever. But not everyone. I don't know but I kinda feel like OP isn't telling us everything, or not accurately. I have seen this before where an OP gave their version. Then literally every other person involved started listing all of OP's sins (the ones the OP "didn't know" or "forgot to mention") in the comments.

Once had a game where the DM started the adventure saying "okay so what are you doing?". No set up, no "you're here in this tavern" just "what are you doing?". We kind of awkwardly tried to go along with it, like my character was hunting, another was scamming people, another was with his family. and we listed it off, and then he said "okay..... so what are you gonna do now?" dude clearly didn't know the point of a DM.

In "the girlfriend knows it all" -story, I get the feeling that something is missing in the relationship between the players. It sounds like OP and the DM was not the best of friends. I would like to read the ENTIRE story.

You have to pay extra attention to what an OP is saying (or not saying) when the story is OP stating how every other player is somehow the problem/too oblivious to notice the problem or irrelevant at all unless they're agreeing with the OP. It's not impossible that it all happened exactly as OP stated without any other hooks, but more than likely something else was at play that either OP DIDN'T know about that factored into the DM's actions and the Players reactions, or there's something that the OP chose to omit to make themself seem more like the victim.

Love the party, ack; posse names. Oh god; one of those Dixie-crat nuts. Good for you OP for kicking the Johnny reb out of the posse. Down with the traitor and up with the stars! Story 3: Hostile DM! How dare OP go against DM’s girlfriend! Oh, that’s BS DM! The whole poison thing is just punishment for OP figuring out what was going on. Oh, you got them that! Probably paid by us, viewers. Seriously, I'm 100% with you on that second story. Okay maybe I could see people being too trusting of the DM and not believing in the concept that he was making sure they were all indebted to his girlfriend or maybe in the back of their mind thinking it was for a story beat but when the DM announces that if somebody dies in this game their player is out not just the character and then after everybody survives just saying I totally poisoned you beforehand and I totally rolled before now so no one saw the role and it was totally enough to kill you and none of them batting an eye either they knew what was going on or they have a real life wisdom score of three giving them a modifier of -4. I don't even lower but it's impossible to roll lower than that on the die

I have a funny Deadlands story. I was playing a mad scientist obsessed with combing any two gadgets he came across. (IE: He famously combined a locomotive and a tank.) But his Holy Grail was a Gatling Breakfast Gun. (Basically a combo of a Gatling gun and the fast breakfast machine. A gun capable of rapid firing waffles, pancakes, French toast and syrup.) And god damn it, after four sessions of trying to build this-- I succeeded. Weirder yet, at first, the machine was deadly as fuck. So much so that another player got pissed at me for going back for it in a fight and killed me. Which was fine by me since one of the others games I was in was moving time slot, and I wanted to be in the same games as my then girlfriend. But when I died, I had to pull from the deck.... and got the black Joker. (Ut-oh.) Anyway, the player who killed me was getting bored with his character. Since I was only going to be able to be in one more session, I didn't want to make a new character. So I asked the DM if I could play the zombie form of my old character. Normally the rules would say no. But he realized what I had in mind... and started cackling like a madman. And my friend's character got a good heroic exit... and I got a more fitting end.... smashed into a repaired waffle gun and fire out of it.

"Girlfriend knows all" sounds like it could be renamed, "That guy gets removed, nobody cares that much." The game the DM chooses to host is the game in offer. You need to decide if the game being offered to you is worth your time. Taking this OP completely at his word, the game offered was flawed, biased, ran by a DM who will cheat, and fun enough that he had to be kicked rather than simply leave. I don't know what would have happened if the player would have been straight with the DM about his concerns. But I can imagine a few scenarios where what he saw as favoritism was the DM facilitating the larger story.

Those entries in the books are not rules they are guidelines. If there are rules they are (1. Know thy player. 2. Do what works at your table. 3. If the party finds it "cool" it "rules".) These are the only rules necessary for a fun and engaging game.

I side with the first guy because of the Edition Wars. 4th edition D&D was the first D&D edition I saw to have Fixed Damage spells. Older editions individual spells got better as you characters grew in level AND you would unlock new spells. There was no "Upcasting" until 3rd edition, and that was because of Metamagic spell feats allowing you to change what spell level you could cast in. I want my Caster Level 5-10 Fireball that uses a Level 3 spell slot again.

You can't expect to get better at something you don't invest any effort into. ... wait... the people who, irl, won the war, because the losing side's economy never had a leg to stand on in the first place... have more advanced technology in this setting... meaning the people who won were better equipped to win... and that somehow means the war lasted longer??? That's like saying the colonialist campaigns of the 18th century would still be going today if the English and Portuguese had had modern assault rifles! Campaigns in which there was barely any fighting because the colonizers had early machine guns and the colonized generally had bows and spears!

First story: If you don’t want rules, you don’t want to play D&D. You just want to play pretend. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you shouldn’t be a jerk about it. People who like apples don’t go around complaining about stupid oranges are for not being apples! Second story: Yeesh. Robert sounds like a nasty piece of work. OP made the right choice in kicking him out. Third story: Wow, those other players must be either the most gullible or willfully blind people alive. It’s honestly kind of impressive. Fourth story: People prefer Scrappy-Doo, possibly the most notoriously hated character in the entire franchise, over Daphne? The heck? Anyway, on a note more related to the actual horror of the story, there are loads of ways to get a character out of a story without killing them. Fred could have gotten sick, or needed to go home because of a family emergency, or any number of other things could happen. At least OP realized in hindsight that sudden murder wasn’t the way to go in this case. Hopefully they can run that game again, maybe with new players, and keep the tone they want.

Bad rolls? The guy made his saves all night and the last save he rolled a 19. But the poison was deliberately designed to do exactly as much con damage as he had, and have a save dc exactly high enough that he needed a 20. Also, he should have had to roll the poison save before the game ended, back when he would have touched it. That would have given him an opportunity to be helped by other characters. I also definitely don't believe DM even rolled that damage because he claimed to have rolled it before the game instead of doing it in front of the group, and somehow it was exactly max which was exactly enough to kill the character.

First one; the first three versions of d&d the spells increased in potency based on caster level, so you threw a d6 of damage for every caster level up to 20 (you could go to level 32 before qualifying for "Immortal" rules). The other guy would probably like old school games better. Low rule games can be fun; theory crafting is solo fun, and low rules games focus on what you do in game versus what kind of bard you can make. There is a weird elitism with op where they are ignoring the other guy's point. A Stat increase every 4 levels of +1 is not addressing the issue the other player is having: does not want to choose between monk abilities and magic. This is an inherent problem; d&d is based on classes that are not really meant to be modular. You are going to have problems making a monk sorcerer with the concept the player has because the system makes you choose between the classes, feats, and Stat increases. Should be playing Savage Worlds, I guess. Also, I think the "nerds" thing is meant to be playful in context of the fact they are having a fairly friendly conversation otherwise.

The Deadlands story is the exact reason why I have a non-negotiable rule that unless it's dealing with factions in the game, there is no political talk. That said, I do frown also at OP and the other players for immediately taking something stated IC into OOC land. Characters are allowed to have their own feelings and stances on things, that road goes both ways, also trying to say his pseduo-KKK talk was "right wing" is a rather stupid generalization and really makes me wonder if OP isn't doing a bit of demonizing the other player in the tale to paint themselves in a better light.

Deadlands story: Why would you play in such a setting, if you weren't going to allow characters to choose to be confederates? It could have led to very interesting stories. Unfortunately, we see the biases of the OP, and I think he should just stick to feel good 5e rookie games, instead of games which could lead to nuance. I mean, is he going to bring up the entire confederate unit of Blacks, who weren't doing it because they were slaves, but because they believed in what the Confederacy stood for, or because Lincoln was an authoritarian dictator that would send his soldiers to crush citizens in New York because they decided on a peaceful protest? Or perhaps that some of these actions leading to most of the states that nearly sided with the confederacy because of Lincoln's tyrannical action?

For what it's worth, Deadlands (or at least the older editions) used the civil war as a backdrop element while the main focus on the game was the supernatural elements that included stuff like demons, cryptids, undead, etc. that would emerge from the titular deadlands and cause trouble that the PC's had to stop before it negatively impacted the setting. Also, Deadlands treats stuff like racism and the like as an always evil action to partake in, with the newer editions outright telling the reader that only evil characters are racists. So even within the context of the game, Roberts would've been considered a shitty person who the party was free to ditch at any point in time, even if his IRL views didn't sync up with his IC racism.

It's a backlash to all the spotlights on left wing extremists egged on by grifters and hustlers who benefit from outrage.

The player and DM in the first story should have gotten rid of the other players immediately. Players who mock the DM and constantly say "thats dumb" at every turn don't have to be at the table. You don't HAVE to play D&D with shitty players nor should it be a chore to play. I don't understand why DMs put up with that sort of shit. True friends don't mock you and make you feel bad about the things you enjoy.
