I think D&D reveals a person's true nature. Given that there are 'no rules' and 'no real consequences', it sets up the perfect scenario to let someone drop all their impulse controls

In many ways, that's why the game can be therapeutic. It can allow people with many forms of stunted social development and / or anxiety to explore different ways of interacting with others without the perceived dangers that go with it IRL. That being said, their is no excuse for many of the extremes people take it to in these horror stories.

I'll be that guy and point out that roleplaying games, not just d&d, can do that too. But absolutely, you can tell who people are and what they like and don't like. You can do the same thing when they are the gm,dm,mc. Or referee of a game too.

It’s strange to hear that people don’t RP during long rests normally. I feel like that’s what the natural thing to do is, you can’t be on vigilant watch with a partner for 2-4 hours and NOT speak a single word to each other.

Same. My group always has some bit of rp during watches. In one game, my rogue and the paladin healed from trauma. (The paladin almost died, my rogue saved him with a healing potion, which reminded her of when her fiancé was killed in front of her. ) In another game my roguelock spoke with another player who was from his past and made a deal with her. Quiet talks during long rests tend to have the most development, in my opinion.

It's funny that, thanks to our spellcasters, we don't have to stand watch. But we do rp during short rests, downtime, and sprinkled a weeeetle bit during combat (talking is a free action after all). And I agree, it makes sense for two players on watch to talk to each other.

I remember the best session I ever had of a game of dnd was when all the players just say in a nice little woodland cottage and just talked to each other like people. Me (the barbarian) and one player (wizard) just sat and had a deep conversation until the end when my character said “you know what I have to do” and yeeted him into the lake to save face and keep looking tough. The Underdark story: Generally what my group would do in this situation is have another player roll for the Paladin. It's a little slow, especially if nobody is familiar with the class, but it's easier than writing the character out of the session and forcing the DM to re-balance the encounters they made assuming the Paladin would be there. Killing the PC of an absent player is a huge misstep, though. The DM should bend logic a little to have them captured or knocked out instead of killed, so the party can rescue them next session.

I think there's a third option in this scenario. You can , if you know the player has to go early, time encounters for that eventuality. By that I mean, finish the game session at the start of the fight rather than halfway through it. Then pick it up again at the start of the fight next time you play. If the rest of your players really want to keep going after the that one player has to go then my suggestion would be to start another game with different characters, maybe even switching GMs. This could be really useful if the player leaving early is a regular occurrence. Although if the player leaving early is too regular you might want to talk to them about that and find a way to remedy that behaviour

not sure if i understood it right but it sound like the combat the player died in was one where the party was actively retreating and the dm just made the pc go statue and let the mobs kill him, or didnt let the other players save him ether if it was a fight. it just sounds like the dm punshed the player for leaving earily in game.

Yeah, some of the best fun comes from when our group roleplays during long rests. I always felt it was just a natural way that characters would do things and that was pretty common. It's even something that happens in single player RPG's a lot. You go back to camp, or tavern, or space ship and "rest" and chat with your npc companions. To me it would be weird if there was no roleplay during a long rest.

For the OotA story... that DM wasn't put in a precarious situation with the player leaving early because apparently that's a normal expected thing for that specific player. Nothing was stopping them from having the character disengage and leave once the party got away. But just because the player had to leave early they decided "You left at this time so your character becomes unresponsive so I don't have to make them disappear for a week". That's not a precarious situation, that's just being an ass because you don't want to put in effort for an explanation. What I'd personally do as a DM who has had players leave mid-combat for various reasons, if the goal was to distract and then flee I'd _let them flee once the others were safe_. It's still their character and it's not up to me to change their plans just because I don't want to write an explanation for why they're gone until next session. I get if accidents happen while the DM is controlling the PC, like if a crit happens. But that's not what happened. They just said "Your character stayed and fought because you left early." That's just not right.

If someone leaves early in my games, I'll have another player take over for them if they are needed for any combats. We had a guy who would frequently either not be there due to work schedule conflicts or needing to leave because of nightshift (roughly 2/3 attendance rate) so the other players would take it in turns looking after his character, with the mantra "what would BigMan do?" He'd never been put in a situation where he was in immediate peril during these absences, but if he was I'd feel real bad for having him die while he's not there, I'd probably drop him to unconscious instead of outright death.

Getting into something like RPG can be scary at first because it's a new and unknown thing played with other people you may know some or nothing about. Sometimes you have to get into a few groups of bad players to finally find a group of good players which sucks at the time but ends up being rewarding in the end. I personally had gotten into some groups that never lasted long, then I was in a group with some people I knew when our DM passed away. It took me a long time to get back into even wanting to listen about tabletop RPGs, but channels like this have helped and I'm finally with a group of people that I really enjoy and am comfortable around.

Our DM had a rule that nothing bad could happen to a character whose player was away. He'd use them as NPCs sometimes to make sure the game could progress (the party would be in trouble if the only healer's player was absent) but no matter what your character would be in the same state or better as when you left it. The farthest he ever pushed this was one time I, the party healer/ utility mage, was away the big bad possessed my character and attacked the party. My character was built to handle none combat needs so everyone was shocked when he almost TPK'd everyone and forced a retreat. When I got back my character was alone with no memory of the possession. He knew clairvoyance and teleport so he caught up in moments, giving everyone a heart attack 😆. Though suspicious, they needed him to heal the grievous wounds (he'd inflicted) and his high charisma quickly won everyone back over. Wish I could've seen it. DM didn't have my character sheet and was guessing at my spell list. If he'd had my actual sheet things might have gone much worse as I'd prided myself on my character's flexibility 😈.

Roleplay during long rests happens in the group I play with. Usually somebody will indicate that they want to do something during the long rest period before it's taken, it started off with the fighter getting her character to prank my character, things like "decorating her hair with some pretty shells", my character being a female tiefling. OOC it was hilarious, IC it use to annoy my character a lot while the fighter character saw it as a "welcome to the family" type of tradition thing. On the most part, most long rests go by normally but there are definitely long rests where there is RP.

Last story made me think of how anytime we get a new player that thinks they can GTA their way through Faerun, our DM gives them immediate Consequences(tm). Like for example a new player rolled an aarakokra, bragging that he was gonna be the Ultimate Troublemaker with the strategy "do the crime, fly away " forgetting that we collectively warned the player multiple times that Waterdeep has griffin riders, guards with crossbows, and that our DM's guards are... y'know, smart. Yeah, no, it helped the player realize this was a team game and he needed to make a team player. So he rolled up a kobold barbarian. Just this tiny little tank that can and will unleash hell. Still a bit feral, but a team player nonetheless.

If I had a Player have to leave in the middle of combat I would either 1) Mediated the combat if it looked like the PCs were going to win, 2) Run the PC for the player, but play them much more cautious, or 3) Paused the fight there. Killing a PC when the player has to leave is huge @-hole move. You move heaven and earth to keep that from happening. It just kills the trust between a player and a DM.

First Story: Like I get wanting a campaign to be more combat focused but from the sounds of it that campaign had a track record for focusing a ton on RP so it's not surprising something like a romance would start. My Sunday game is literally following a whole quest line to put on a wedding for one of the players. While nothing is directly said to suggest this, a part of me feels there may be somr underlying homophobia here where he suddenly had such a huge issue with romantic replaying when two dudes were doing it that he left the campaign and blocked everyone.

By the end of the campaign the DM had him become chaotic evil because he kept committing out-of-character war crimes and murders. Literally worse than stuff I was doing for my patron. using long rest watches for some RP is definitely a usual thing. like every game I've played or stream I watch has used it for small interpersonal moments. and the long rest rules allow for an hour of doing whatever small activities (armor repair, light reading, chit chat, cooking) so as long as you maybe spend another hour or two total to the long rest you can still let everyone take a two-hour-ish watch and even deal with a combat encounter somewhere in the middle

In comment to the first story: My group RPs during long rests all the time! One of our players lost his character right before a big story event and he rolled up a new one of an archeologist who was following us into some ruins. He was on watch with me, so I spent three days of watches chatting his ear off to give him a chance to share his new backstory, give him in game excuse to know the plot, and lay the ground work for why this new dude sticks with our weirdo party after the job ended. We got ambushed one of the nights, but we've been roleplaying during our watch cycles since the campaign started and will continue.

I've actually worked out a system for people who leave midcombat. Effectively, I take control of said character for that combat and send them to the last area the group made camp, or another safe area, after the combat is over. When the player returns, they'll pick up where they went for safety. It is considered polite that the active players work their way back to the stray, but not expected. In short, don't piss off your teammates and you'll wake-up to their chuckles, banter and mission prep around you, but if you do then you'd better haul ass and catch up ya damn slacker. XD As for story 2, where are those consequences? The DM effectively allowed two disruptive turd buckets progressively test the waters until they broke his game. I've always enjoyed a good sly one here and there, but if a character crosses the line with cumulative douche baggery it's time for an "Old Yellar" scene at the hands of randoms or an angry party. Chances are you can whine about it after I record your gear and destroy your character sheet, but if you do complain about consequences for your shitty actions after I point out everything you did to turn your party against you, I'll just say maybe (add pvp video game name here) is looking for a few good punching bags. ^^

If that's what the players are cool with I don't see the harm in allowing these features but it always comes with the risk of EXACTLY this.

You're all helping each other set up camp and cook and the like...would be awkward if nobody talked to each other. For the second story....I would have the cleric move to be near where the party can assist them, and if they get "Killed" I have them instead get knocked out, so the party at least has a chance to resolve the issue. For the last...yikes, why some people feel the need to ruin the enjoyment of others in D&D I will never understand.

First story: I totally get why Jack would hate to be stuck watching that RP play out. Granted, this is a group that's otherwise totally okay with it happening, and Jack apparently hadn't been prone to this before, but just speaking for me, I wouldn't want a session to be held up for a long time just for two party members to make eyes at each other in the most melodramatic fashion possible. Doesn't excuse him being a complete tool and psycho nutter about it, but I also don't think it's a huge mystery why he wouldn't have fun with that.

Dm's... Dont kill pc's when they are not there. Ever. It's total bullshit. That said. Unless you have too, dont constantly leave early, players. Its not fair to the dms or party to just lose a player mid combat or story. work on the schedule with the dm and party so that you are all able to play around the same time. Communicate. Its 95% of the game. (the other 5 is writing notes and tossing dice. though you should always take notes)

OP has commented above that as they don't have transport, they have to rely on family for a lift and the family always pick them up an hour before closing time, while everyone else gets to stay the extra hour. The DM knew it would be the case because it's a regular thing so in no way gets to claim it was unexpected or couldn't be accounted for.

I had a situation that happened similar to the first story, but the annoyed person was better at expressing herself about the problem. She wasn't mad at me and the other character having a romance, she was mad that the character having the romance wasn't HER character. Our characters had both been flirting with the same character, and mine had been the one to catch his eye. It wasn't an out of character jealousy problem or anything, we're all three straight women. She just wanted to have her character get the guy and was upset that I "won" and was ticked off at me for it. She didn't even talk to the guy's player, just me, to tell me to back off and that it wasn't fair. I treated it like she was throwing a tantrum and ignored her, but warned the other player so she'd know what was up. The guy's player was annoyed at the whole thing, because her character wouldn't have been interested at all, even if mine wasn't around. TBH, upset girl had main character syndrome, but a bland personality with a laid back RP style, so even before this she mostly just pouted a lot because she got equal screen time. She honestly thought being a pink ninja who sat silent and "mysterious" in a corner was interesting enough on it's own that we'd all be centering the plot on her, and kept getting angry that we weren't playing backup dancers to make it happen.

So, I was a DM in a situation very similar to story 2 tonight, actually. My group had started a combat encounter last week for a boss fight, but we had to pause at the top of round 2 because of the time and everyone getting tired. This week, a player was missing because they needed sleep due to not getting any, and would have to leave early if they got to even join us. So, what do I do? I have the PC leave, and take a couple of the lower npcs from the fight off the map to “battle off camera” so that I both don’t accidentally kill the pc while the player is missing, and don’t screw the other players over because the combat was no longer balanced as it was originally set up if one person left and all the npcs stayed. It was still a tough fight, and everyone had fun. And I showed the PC being a bit roughed up but victorious when the party saw them a bit later in the session, once initiative was finished. So there was no excuse for the “Out of the Abyss” DM to not take out the paladin with even as simple as having it disengage and run back so the player could keep the new character they literally just started playing. Maybe I’m too nice a dm, but I am mortified when someone does something like that while the player isn’t even at the table.

Doubt it. Some people are just uncomfortable with how romance in tabletop games. Mostly they have a (wrong but still understandable.) Assumption that people are going to make it weird. Don't blame Jack on that. Blame him for blocking people instead of talking to them about it. Blame him for not working it out. But not for disliking romance in games.

@DnD Doge Roll20 Gives a few options when handing out permissions for tokens and sheets (Everyone/Account bound/DM Only) Editing someone elses sheet is just bad form, online or at the table. Being a pathfinder the idea of RPing during "resting" time being taboo is very weird (a 5th Edition thing?) Between fighting monsters and moving around questing, night time camping is possible the best time to RP (tavern is probably the best).

Blah, that last story, why do players agree to play good aligned characters, then play as if they're chaotic evil? Once had a DM insist we all had to play good aligned characters because it was a good aligned campaign, so naturally 2/6 of us brought good characters, the rest brought chaotic evil lunatic murder hobos who's literal first action was to split the party from the good guys and have their own 2 and a half hour adventure where they burned down a church to a good god, some houses, and murdered homeless people, all for no reason at all, then came back to the bar and killed the good guys and the DM just allowed it all... Sometimes DM's have to learn to say no.

First story, while my group doesn't RP during long rests usually I don't find it weird. Some groups are heavy RP and Jack leaving was just cause he didn't fit in. Him blocking everyone and ghosting the other players is kinda over reaction. Second story Never played Out of the Abyss, but first red flag I got from that DM was that he didn't even tell the players anything about the campaign. Like you give them a basic idea usually so they can work with that. The killing a character while the player away is a huge no-no, like use some common sense. And he didn't even tell the player that before the next session? What an asshat. Third story: Yeah those guys were horrible, but the DM really did enable them. There will be consequences (but doesn't show them). And the PVP started when he stole from another player, that is a form of PVP. Working against the party also is PVP. Campaign wise they seemed to be part of an army, stealing from and threatening villagers of their own nation would be a court martial right there. A very public and messy execution would be happening the next time they came for more orders.

2nd story: D&D is about the players, not the dice. If the dice are screwing over a player because of their real life commitments, then toss them out the window. To DM for a group and simply let an AFK player die demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the game's purpose: to have fun. Also if a player comes up to you to express that they felt something you did was unfair and you shrug it off, that's a problem. Everyone at the table should make an attempt to be empathetic, especially the DM. Being dismissive is the opposite of empathetic.
