In today's episode of DnD Horror Stories, we have a few tales of players of dungeon masters making decisions that make you wonder, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?" Including the innablility to recognize bandits, sending parties on fetch quests that can't be completed, and making players play characters that are evil.

Players that push the idea that bandits are incapable of being intelligent and only "run up and attack you" just shows that those players have been playing too much Skyrim or something. Why would the bandits immediately attack the party when the party isn't instigating a fight. Bandits that have lasted long enough to have scars are smart enough to not immediately attack a strong party.
@goncalocarneiro3043
@goncalocarneiro3043 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, videogame RPGs should start reflecting this by having some form of passive checks. Such as having an intimidation stat work in combination with a reputation stat of sorts. This way bandits would attack people that look like softies and have few feats or people with outrageous feats that hop into unbelievable territory while avoiding rugged looking characters that are known to be strong, or to at least frequently demolish bandits.
@k.v.7681
@k.v.7681 2 жыл бұрын
@@goncalocarneiro3043 A lot of modern games do this. First that jumps to mind is Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Bandits react to the arms and armor you're wearing. They don't feel the same about attacking a fully decked out knight as they do about kiling a peasant on sight. Skyrim has a lot of mods where bandits can flee and reorganise.

“Raped Ranger” story: something like this happened about 3.5 years ago in an Adventurer’s League game I was playing in. There was no memory alteration involved; but the player (of the female Barbarian victim) insisted on retaliating against the Wizard-player rapist, and though the DM insisted on no PVP, I spoke up and asked, “What do you think letting one character rape another character is?” There was an argument, and the Barbarian player rolled a d20 and got a Nat-20, we unanimously (the other four players) called it a “killing blow” on the Wizard who then packed up his stuff (teary-eyed, I kid you not) and reported US for ‘ambushing and killing his character’. We told the real story, and both the player (somewhere between 14 and 16 yo) and the DM (mid-30’s?) were ejected from the Adventurer’s League and banned from the store. I saw the DM once later in the store, he had shaved off his beard and dressed up a bit. I reported his ‘banning’ and he was confronted, refused that it was Him, refused again to identify himself (with I.D.) until the threat of having the police called to eject him again, and was finally ejected from the game (posing as a “new-to-the-game player” this time) AND the store. At the store there’s a Wall of Shame whereupon the photographs of those caught stealing or those to be refused service in the future for other misdeeds, including being banned, are displayed. To my knowledge, he’s the only one up there that has two distinctive photographs for the same offense (being banned).

1st story: The DM hit them with hints with all the subtlety of a brick and they still fell for it. The players honestly deserved to get hosed, especially since the main reason they didn't catch the hints was because they were apparently meta-gaming and assuming that bandits would just attack them on sight. 2nd story: The DM and the wizard player were jerks, just to put it mildly. Imagine retconning a character's outfit just to throw a bone to the horny wizard trying to be a pervert. They both deserve a smack upside the head for this. 3rd story: The players roleplaying themselves playing the skin flute and having a giggle about it wasn't the horror story, the DM purposefully doing it because it made OP uncomfortable and the Barbarian for taking it personally and insinuating that OP was wrong to complain about the "joke," even though other party members understood and were willing to adjust themselves moving forward, because OP was a girl...that's what made this a horror story. 4th story: Charm Person doesn't work like that and even if it does, it's pretty messed up to pimp another character out to someone without their consent and then erasing their memories of the event so they can't do anything to get revenge on you. That's especially scummy and I can't believe anyone would do something like this during a game, let alone a game among friends/acquaintances. 5th story: I can't think of anyone who'd learn that their character was guilty of such heinous crimes and not react negatively to it. Seriously, I'd be pissed off too. 6th story: I couldn't imagine being in a game where the GM wasted 5 hours and then blamed me for wasting his own time because we thought that he was going somewhere with this plot thread. As a rule of thumb, if you know something's going to be a waste of time...don't put it in your game, especially if you had something more exciting planned after the fact.

Setting aside that Charm Person doesn't work that way, Modify Memory is a 5th-level spell and can only change up to ten minutes of a target's memories. I don't believe for a second that a 9th-level wizard couldn't afford ship's passage. In fact he could have just charmed the captain and had him sign a contract to take the party where they needed to go at a big discount. Of course, that group was made of little shits, and you shouldn't ever force a player to experience something that make them physically upset. Just thought I would point out that the Wizard used both of his spells incorrectly and in particular had a much easier and less odious way of handling the situation that was right in front of him.

With the bandit story, as someone who doesn't play TTRPGs I'd be more suspicious if they had attacked. Like, clearly they must have an ulterior motive if they're attacking someone well armed. It's the predator vs. prey mentality. The predator has a finite amount of resources and can only benefit from a certain victory and getting a meal/money, (unlike prey who wins if they get away with their lives, even if injured/robbed) so they have to pick and choose when they go after prey and why they usually don't go after comparable predators, unless it's a matter of territory or something. e.g. a lion won't attack a hyena for food, but will attack over an encroachment of territory. Bandits and pirates should have the same mentality, and it should be suspicious when they don't.

I have a Bandit Story of my own that ended a lot better. I showed up at our LGS and only our DM and one other player whom I'll call "Bob" were the only ones there. DM told me that the others called ahead and they'll be late so to pass the time, he sent me and Bob on a simple "Find the Bandits" Quest. I was playing a Paladin but I wanted to get rid of the stigma that all Paladins are Lawful Stupid and Boy Scouts that would criticize you for simply jaywalking or "I'm a Paladin so my actions are justified", etc. So donning a cloak (Since my Paladin didn't have bulky armor), I hid my role while traveling down the road with Bob to see if the appearance of a common traveler would lower the bandit's guard. We end up going into a forest where we found a group camped out in the middle of it. I knew right off the bat that they were the bandits but I also knew that Player Knowledge =/= Character Knowledge so I played my character thinking they COULD be the bandits but they're not entirely sure and thought to bluff them into revealing it, but my bluff didn't work because long story short, my choice of wording was so alien to the bandits that their reaction was literally, "Huh...?" Since my bluff didn't work, I continued my character not being 100% sure about it, and said, "Okay you better be careful out there. Words are there are bandits attacking people." So I left. Bob, however... ...He convinced the bandits to join us in a conversation and create a circus troupe. And that's how a session turned into a performance much to the confusion of the other players when they arrived. Late Player: "What are we doing for today?" DM: (Barely able to keep his cool) "We're preparing to run a circus." Late Player: "WHAT?!"

Yeah, I do agree about the trilogy of that story: Those are the kind of people that I wouldn't associate with, and it seems that Wizard and the Dm are horrible people.

My character once fell prey to Charm Person by a humanoid beholder who then ordered me to attack my party. The rules state that it makes you view the caster as your best friend, but my character was extremity duty oriented and had been ordered by his God to protect the party, which gave me an idea. In my character's mind his ward and his "best friend" were trying to kill each other so he needed to defuse the situation. I cast reverse gravity on everyone. Beholder: "You are NOT WORTH IT!" Me: I soak it DM: You soak a finger of death? Me: Mortality domain makes me immune to death effects. DM: Nice. Attacking me broke the charm and I resumed attacking the beholder with my party. 🙂 My character was a cleric/sorcerer focused on healing and utility magics (ie: the party toolbox). Not great at combat but had an answer to almost any situation. Spectral Hand plus touch range healing proved to be an incredible combo btw. We were all power gamers, DM included, so things balanced out and we had a lot of fun.

I feel like every single person in that party would think that an armed robber wouldn't attack them because they "didn't attack first" irl. What're they gonna do? Tell God that he's being a bad DM as their bodies go cold?

The reason the Charm Person memory modification is so annoying is because Modify Memory is a 5th level spell. I used to run a warlock who kept telling the party they were lucky he did not have access to that spell yet whenever anything mildly embarrassing happened.

7:08 Honestly if I were the DM in that situation, I'd turn it around to say that the Cleric has the ability to change people's clothes on a whim, meaning he can imagine a heavily armored enemy in their underwear and *poof!* Bye bye armor. Of course I'd also be lenient on this ability being exclusively for situations like what I described as to avoid enabling the Claric's pervy behavior.

The only time I've ever seen the "bandits attack on sight" thing not come off as stupid, would be in universes like Fallout, where stuff like drug use and crushing poverty is super common. At least a junky suffering withdraw and armed with a tire iron charging some guy in power-armor and holding a mini-gun comes off as plausible.

There is a fine line in adult jokes; if you make dark jokes with your close friends, your trust in your friendship can cut through any poor choice of words. But you make dark jokes, adult ones where even it may mistakenly be implied that the person would be okay with assault? That's the point of when you $*%& up so hard, you'd be lucky if the person ever talks to you again. That GM who writes in that "detail" in the op's backstory crossed that line.

being fairly honst, the one where all the characters lost their memories and one of them found out he was a terrible person is not a problem for me... like, how many cool stories we have of characters who lost their memories, only to find out that before looing their memories they were horrible people, and than choosing to be good people dispite their previous life? i find it an interesting concept, and i wouldnt mind if it was with my character.

Okay 1. Was the skirt peek, the wank off, and the ranger bum all the same group if so, how the hell did OP sit through all of that. 2. For the kiddy diddler story, I find it interesting. I would have played the character as someone who is utterly disgusted with themselves when finding out and dedicated their life to trying to making it right. Like you have amnesia, whatever wires were crossed to make you do those things might be fixed now, that's at least how I would play it

With the second batch of stories, OP is being too hard on herself. Too many people forget that not everyone gets an upbringing that gives them the skills to handle conflict or assert themselves when things are bad. It's not something that everyone gets taught and it's grossly unfair - not to mention incredibly self-righteous - to expect everyone to know automatically how to handle situations like this, without knowing anything about their upbringing or what they've been through. It's really easy to look back and say you "Should" have done more but apparently, it's also very easy to forget how I felt being that age and not knowing how to stop something you knew felt bad when everyone else seemed ok with it. Peer pressure is not as easy to shrug off as all that.

the OP of the first story tells it in third person this means two things, ether A: he is one of the Players and embarrassed or B: he is the DM and only tells us half the story and he actually tricked the player and retroactively adds flags and hints while beeing silent about what he actually said

To be fair, the last story IS different from the Forever Wars in one key area: there were actually weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, in the form of chemical weapons that WE sold to Saddam in the hopes he would use them against Iran. We also found evidence of anthrax production.

On the last story, I can understand the GM being upset with the players for applying video game logic. It's childishly stupid to assume that everything you're told is true. He could've played it off better, and certainly should have rather than waste five hours, but he wasn't wrong for being perplexed at the party continuing to go on the word of an NPC. It's much the same as the first story, really. The players were dumb, and mad that the world wasn't as simple as a Pokemon RPG.
