Story 1: the Paladin was shown to be an idiot from the beginning: he referred to OP as a "heretical beast", but a person can only be a heretic if they belong to the religion claiming orthodoxy, so if it's a question of religion, she would be an "infidelious beast". If the question was over whether her very existence was considered to be unholy, he should have said, "blasphemous beast"/"beast of blasphemy" or "sacrilegious beast" or even "unholy beast created by sacrilege". Pretty much anything would work besides "heretical".

Ok, so the second I hear "Airship/blimp/zeppelin" in a DnD story, alarm bells start going off, air raid sirens, factory klaxons and abandon ship orders follow suite, and GODDAMN WAS IT RIGHT AGAIN. The real question is why does it ALWAYS devolve into the DMs sex fetishes and godly overpowered DMPCs? It's bizarre how it keeps going to the same subjects.
@DanaOtken2 ай бұрын
Hm. From a narrative context, "give the players an airship": * The mechanics of travel are being handwaved away. While there are in fact a lot of interesting new issues with logistics - both keeping the airship going and dealing with that you can reasonably expect just about everybody to now notice your every movement - if a storyteller wants these they often will choose something other than a blimplike transport. Blimps have a passive feel to them and thus are code for "relax, you'll get wherever the story is happening without doing much of anything". * There are good odds anybody writing a blimp wants lots of interpersonal stuff happening with the party. This doesn't have to mean romance or sex, but anybody wanting to focus on that will want to write a blimp to remove all the stuff that gets in the way of romance or sex happening. * Pretty much everybody has sex fetishes and overpowered DMPCs buried somewhere in them, and the people with the fewest inhibitions about letting them out are also the ones who will fail to see any downside to writing a blimp. It's one of those things that works just fine if you're writing a book but doesn't work fine with actual other people playing characters.

The only campaign I ever played in, there was a VERY Meta-gamey "That Guy" Rogue who basically got everything he wanted because he was the carpool for half the group and the DM didn't want to lose all the players because of it. Party stumbled across a Deck of Many Things and while most players chose to draw a card, I didn't, as my character had knowledge of the deck and what misfortune it could bring. Rogue tells DM "I persuade them to draw." and DM doesn't even ask them to like...give me a reason in roleplay or in-person, he just allows the persuasion roll. Rogue Succeeds it and I guess for some reason I'm forced to draw from the deck even though I had clearly stated that I wouldn't, just because the rogue was like "*C'MOOOOOOOON*". Being new to DnD, I felt it was a little overpowered to be able to just control another player's character against their will, and I found out later on that I was right in thinking that. The DM just sucked and the behavior from the Rogue was right up his alley of being a terrible person.

He was hostile towards me when I made a pact with a demon but instead of attacking me outright, he decided to stick by my character to prevent her from doing anything too egregious. @@ChobinoftheFunk Yes, an indepth understanding of Dungeons and Dragons over a 10+ years experience as both a player and DM, both in official settings and custom settings. First of all the introduction of a Spellblade and Priest classes seems to suggest this is a 5e campaign, because both pathfinder and 3.5e already have classes that would fit the roles as described. A lot of inconsistencies seem to point at a faulty story, the paladin "casting smite on the daemon" - that's not how smite works. The Paladin being barred from using their healing powers from breaking their oath to their goddess because Oathbreakers can still cast lay on hands, same goes for smite. The general lack of understanding on how paladins get their powers. Oaths are not to gods or goddesses, they are to a set of values. Some may chose to roleplay as pledging to follow the values of a god, but breaking their oath doesn't remove their powers, it makes them oathbreakers, with different powers, but they keep "divine smite" and "lay on hands" (healing). The irrelevance of "differences between daemons and demons in the lore" to the act of attacking a party member for a race choice. Both are evil fiends, both can be summoned and made pacts with, and unlike devils, they aren't as likely to fully respect their pacts. This is irrelevant to the situation though. It almost has a "and then everybody clapped" formula, which is a high suggestion of not only fiction but also bad writing. It is pretty fake if you know what details to look for.

Just decided he was right and everyone else was wrong, then got mad when proven wrong and tried to make another excuse. They even gave him chances to stop and save his character by rewind his actions starting the fight before the last blow, but kept going. Granted the dm should have had a chat with the paladin after that smite warning. Chances are just as likely that the instead of changing his actions if corrected, the paladin would have doubled down and stayed antagonistic to the spellblade for contrived reasons.

I feel like whenever someone makes a character with strong bias towards some stuff (be it actions or IN GAME races), it needs to be stated at session 0 so others can take into consideration whenever they create their characters. For instance : if one's backstory is they hate Orcs because their family was massacred by some, and someone makes an Half-Orc in the group, they should discuss to see if the first can handle it, or if either the first's backstory or the second's race need to change for good cohesion.

Wholeheartedly agreed. I actually saw something similar with a character that was enslaved by standard evil drow before escaping get in a party with a drow who just wanted to explore the surface with no evil involved. Story #1 - Lemme guess. All through this, Paladin's Player was saying, "I'm just role-playing my Character." I don't put this on miscommunication by the Group at all, but entirely on Paladin deliberately choosing to be an @$$. Having one Character dislike or distrust another can make for an interesting game. Being on alert for treachery and so forth, fair enough. But Paladin went well beyond that despite warnings from the DM and that the Daemon had not shown any hostility in return. No sympathy whatsoever, and my respect to the DM and the rest of the Group for handling this as they did. Story #2 - If you are uncomfortable with the direction the game is taking , then always always ALWAYS *say so* . Seriously. Even if it seems like a minor thing or something that you expect will pass in time. If nothing else, you'll learn everything you'll need to know about that group from their reaction to your concerns. I do wonder if there is something more to this story, but OP is clearly better off out of that group. Story #3 - Yeah, this DM was given a lot more chances than he deserved. Enough said. Story #4 - NOT what Persuasion is for. Yep, a serious talk with the (inexperienced) DM is definitely in order.

DM was the boyfriend of said girl, who was very interested in knowing me, and kind of went of on me for "trying to steal his girl" which I had to clarify it was just playful and I did stop it since he felt uncomfortable. He obviously held an understandable grudge against me, but I didn't judge that part of him. I was clearly in the wrong for flirting with the girl though I didn't know she had a boyfriend before. It was mostly combat with little roleplay: I made an halfling rogue and DM told me that he didn't like rogues straight up at the start of a session, telling me their sneak attack was overpowered and that we were limited to one sneak attack on the first round of combat if we had advantage on that hit . He also didn't allow for surprise rounds (both ways which I thought was fair at the time). I was initially annoyed because he didn't tell me anything before the session, or laid any ground rules, or even a session 0 (which was fine since it was a oneshot). We got into our first combat fairly soon, not really sure what it was but I remember they were like 2 enemies. The area was kind of tight. So I stayed back with another rogue and we mostly kept to hiding behind walls and pillars and shooting our shortbows, while a fighter and Paladin fought in the front lines. In the second round, I tried to hit an enemy engaged with the figther and DM decided that since the fighter was between me and the target I would shoot at a -5 penalty (3/4 cover, which is fair) and when I missed (not a natural 1) he decided that I hit the fighter and went on explaining that he ruled shooting into melee like this. I spent the rest of that encounter just hiding behind the wall with my other rogue buddy and we then got told off by the fighter and paladin for not contributing to the fight. We told them that because of their positioning and our tight area, we couldn't either get into melee (they locked down a 2x2 area) or find a better angle to shoot, and we would require them to move their characters so that we could hit. They took that into account for the next encounters. i also apologized to the fighter for hitting him and offered him a potion I had bought before to make up for my clumsiness. He took the potion and the apology and we carried on. We then were surprise attacked (remember what the DM said about no surprise rounds? Well he lied.) by some statues and I just spent the whole fight restrained (no save or check) and taking damage from being crushed by a statue. Other characters were never restrained or grappled even though the statues were all the same and outnumbered us. Since I didn't really do anything special I assumed this was some sort of revenge he plotted or something, but I didn't really care cause I was cheering for the party and getting into the roleplay of it. Next oneshot we had I had his girlfriend help me build a kunoichi (think female ninja), a multiclass rogue/fighter with many thrown dagger attacks (first round) for a level 10 oneshot, thrown weapon fighting style didnt exist yet and he rulled I coulnd't make more than 1 dagger thrown per round because of object action interactions but decided to warn me only on the moment we started playing despite knowing my character and concept a week in advance. Long story shot, he made all the enemies resistant to piercing damage, and ensured even on my best turn (round 1) I would never be able to contribute much to the fight. He also made my roleplay feel useless, one dude playing druid grabbed an enemy and stuffed him in an iron maiden and was rewarded for it by requiring no rolls or grapple checks while I tried to jump over an enemy to flee after disengaging and made a decent acrobatics roll (20 something since I had expertise) only to fail the check and fall directly on the medium sized enemy and fall prone while the enemy didn't. Session ended with party being spared for angering the enemy but my character was captured and tortured and he felt it apropriate to roleplay the torture. Glad I left that group, since then I have been playing with some friends i made in grade school that turned to be huge DnD fans and have never regretted joining them ever since.

So tired of people misusing paladins and giving them a bad name -_-

I came into tabletop games with paladin's name being pre-ruined by stories of corrupt religion and the crusades. Could call problem player paladins "historically accurate paladins" and not bat an eye.

Its a fake story probably to paint paladin players in a bad light.

@@ShepardCommander Then what about every tabletop horror story where a Paladin player is a jerk invoking their name?

PvP is fine in my opinion

There was an instance in a session I played (which took place in an extradimensional arcade, at that) where I faced off against a fellow player with premade sheets for both of us - they were limited-use, and we were allowed full use of our characters before and after the match. I lost, but I used the opportunity to help the winner out of their situation, whereupon we shook hands and conducted ourselves cordially. After the session this was in, I brought up that it worked both IC and OOC - IC because the character isn't a raging murderhobo or sore loser, and OOC because I was trying to PREVENT a horror story from brewing, win or lose. The concept of PvP isn't inherently good or bad, but it tends to get ruined when players conduct themselves poorly.

Way more than half these stories would exist without PvP.

1st story: to pull from the Shield Hero comparison, Paladin thought he was Naofumi, but in reality he was Motoyasu (if you’ve watched the show you know what I mean) 2nd story: that DM has accounts on, “those” type of websites, I just know it 3rd story: (if I was a player in this game) “mysterious OP little girl #3 appears” me: oh I know where this is going *immediately jumps off Airship flipping the double bird* me: see you in hell! *splats* 4th story: unfair and BS, plain and simple. Hope things improve for the player.

0:28 Simba's clearly seen some shit. 10:01 This is an example of a story that happened regardless of communication. After his demon argument was refuted, he immediately switched his excuse to her being overpowered, and when that argument was refuted too, he stormed out in a huff. He obviously had something against the player and not the character. Good riddance. Try harder to think objectively next time, Doge. Not every problem can be solved with even more communication. 14:03 I see three possibilities for why the OP of the second story was treated that way. 1. The other female player was jealous of the attention she was getting, especially when the in-character romance started, and she convinced the DM to get rid of her without outright kicking her out. 2. The OP had a crush on her and didn't like that she was getting close to another player. 3. It's possible she might have dressed showy and acted a little too friendly with everyone. If that's the case, the sex and pregnancy thing was most likely their way of slut shaming her, and when she didn't get the hint, they decided to be more openly hostile towards her. Combine that with the fact that a lot of female players tend to play male characters as brainless, sex-crazed, "milady" type gym bros (see Bart from the Stinky Dragon Podcast for a prime example), and it's too much for a more modest and conservative group to take. 15:10 If you're playing as a character that's the same age or even a couple years older or younger, I see no problem with having a relationship with a 7-year-old girl. Context is important. 21:36 There was no mention of any romantic relationships with little girls. It was a bit weird that multiple DMNPCs looked childish, but clearly, the OP was just making the DM out to be a total creep because she didn't like his DMing style. 25:07 For the last story, you just have to remind everyone that persuasion isn't mind control. Also, you contest persuasion with insight, not more persuasion since the ones being persuaded aren't trying to persuade anyone, but they are trying to tell if they can trust the one doing the persuading.
