A succubus priestess sounds like an idea that could be really fun to play in a game, if it’s done correctly
@Zetact_
@Zetact_ Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine someone who puts an extreme value on temperance and the willpower to resist one's nature, since the succubus nature in her is quite literally a reflection of her inner demon. She would not be provocative, but completely the opposite and be a downright prude. But not so much that she is a prude, but that she essentially forces herself into the role so that she doesn't fall into bad habits. She should be introverted, at least in how she's played, preferring solo hobbies like reading or making crafts because too much interaction with others would risk exciting her succubus blood. The type to keep herself busy because idle hands are the devil's playthings. Her world view would focus on how difficult it is to tread the path of good but she believes that anyone should be able to. She sympathizes with those who do evil out of circumstance but does believe that they should be able to find a way of not needing to do so, but she has zero tolerance for those who do evil with no good reason and oftentimes would probably shock the party with how harsh she can be with regards to those types - she'd sometimes come across as downright psychotic. Very cavalier in that respect. She'd generally be patient which should play into how she acts, but most notably she'd have something of a breaking point where if something is able to burn through her immense amount of patience she would go utterly berserk. Though keeping sexuality at arms' length and more like a burst of releasing stress, the most sexual it really should get in these sorts of moments would be hints of subtext. Mike Tyson said he'd need to have sex to release some of his pent-up aggression before his fights so he wouldn't outright murder his opponents, I'm thinking something along those lines. I'd make a point to actually have the character remain chaste for the entire run of the game, since it's kinda the point of the character and reinforces her strong-willed side. If the situation calls for it then you could add in a little bit of innuendo, but the purpose should be to reinforce just how extreme the temptation her succubus blood is trying to shove her into that she is still able to resist. Keep it subtle but I think ideally it should be juuuust enough to make a slight amount of awkwardness in the table, just for a moment. A, "Well, she's a succubus, after all, haha..." kind of feeling. But if the table wouldn't be all right with this part you could just cut it. Basically the focus of her character isn't so much the sexual nature of a succubus and more the juxtaposition of the succubus parts being on a priestess. The kind of person who would result from someone who is simultaneously a good person but with a demon half that is so completely denied that when that inner darkness does show up it's even more extreme than it would be if she embraced it, just that she tries to exclusively direct that psycho side at people who deserve cruelty.

@@Zetact_ they could also play as a cleric to a goddess of love like Aphrodite, a deity who seems like it would make sense for one of her servants to be a literal sex demon, or something like that. That way they could kind of lean into the nature of a succubus, but have part of her vows of priesthood be that she can only ever have sex with the love of her life and no one else. She could still seduce and even drain enemies of life energy but she just couldn’t fuck them lest she be stricken down by her goddess

@@Zetact_ I have succubus character of my own in the wings that’s a School of Necromancy Wizard, and a lawyer, who isn’t really interested in the sex part of being a succubus but still uses her succubus powers from time to time just to keep them sharp. The end goal of her would be eventually becoming a warlock patron with a legit legal contract that the prospective warlock has to sign with a bunch of clauses and provisions and legalese bs that only lawyers know what the fuck it means

I think a Priest/Priestess wanting to "Convert" even Undead is an interesting idea, but not how it was executed here. The philosophy I'd go with is "They may not understand, but I still wish to tell them the good news, that they might rest easier regardless." or "It is my duty to preach, be they turned from wickedness or nay." Just being part demon - i.e. Tiefling - would have been enough in my book. They already have demonic blood, so one being an honest to goodness Holy Priest/Priestess of a Lawful Good god would be amazing. They could fight against their nature and have moments of weakness, not to mention the persecution they might face all around - from other Tieflings and demons who see them as traitors, to even townsfolk who don't believe their conviction/faith. It gives me real Nightcrawler (from X-Men) vibes.

I don't understand how players can make ability "checks" without the permission of the DM. If the DM doesn't call for a check, you shouldn't be able to make one, period. You're just rolling dice unprompted.

I’ve done it sometimes. I play in two different adventurer’s guild games (a custom, less restrictive adventurer’s league where all content is allowed). I’m kinda a chaotic dumbass player but I only do it for comedy and only when I’m the only one that’s gonna suffer for it. Whenever we’re asked to strap in to the ship, my dms know I don’t strap in and I know they’ll ask me to make a dex save to stay on the ship so it’s gotten to the point where I just do it unprompted but again that’s only because I know that I’ll be asked to do it.

I wonder whether part of Priestess' weirdness was because the player thought Clerics were 'supposed to' preach the ear off anyone in the vicinity in the same way that some players think Rogues are 'supposed to' steal everything that's not nailed down. The praying around corpses might be because they thought their deity might bring that corpse back from the dead if they prayed enough. Yes, I know that doesn't make sense but it might do to someone whose only understanding of Clerics is that they spend all of their time proselytising to please their deity and thinks the (excessive) amount of it they've done should get them a reward. That may have even been why they did it to that level; trying to build up divine credit, and why they were so frustrated when it didn't work; "But I've done all of this for my deity and in their holy name; why aren't they rewarding me with miracles?"

That's a crazy long list of people I'm supposed to remember for the priestess story, tbh. By the time you got to the end of the list, I had forgotten the start of it. I just remembered people I believed would be key figures. DM, problem player, chill guy who knows a lot about the game and a bunch of random dudes. I'm just saying, giving us a long list of players and their descriptions doesn't exactly make it easy to remember who is who by the time the story finally begins. People will just filter out the irrelevant ones anyway. I know I did.

Honestly this story raises flags for me. In the pre-made drop and use DnD campaign I'm using, I'm both DM and playing 2 characters, kitsune monk and fairy sorcerer. My general guide for backstories is bullet point it, and give me at least 1 character secret to integrate into the story, preferably at least 1 secret with an overlap with another PC. This gives plenty of leeway for me, and I'm on the autism spectrum so it makes it easy to adjust to incorporate the secrets

Can't say anything for certain as I wasn't there but the way the stories written concerns me. It sounds like they know Priestess has issues when they decide to exclude him from other games but they are then surprised when he acts adversely towards them as they still try to string him along and keep him around in the friend group. I dont think they were being very considerate towards his feelings. It sounds like he definitely has a social disorder and if you do not know how to act around people like that, then it's more compassionate to just leave them.

If my Cleric player was THAT determined to talk to the spirit of a dead guy I'd just give it to them as long as they rolled high enough, same with converting undead to their religion, if they don't want to do combat but they want to reduce the number of enemies, I would argue that a converted undead would cease to function, sure make most of the undead would be soulless constructs that can't be converted but give the player something to work with here, make a few of them side with them and crumble to dust, maybe leave the mark of the cleric's God? Mechanics and rules are way less important than giving every player at the table something to remember the game by.

You can play your character however you want, but players don't have to like it and play with you either. People have to understand that it's a 2 way street just like real life. 16:30 I mean, just use animals as an example. "Can a man convert a dog, or a cat, or a bird, to the man's religion? No, because they lack the capability of understanding that as a concept. You can't explain god or mythology or whatever to something that simply can't understand it. Same as you can't talk a chair into dancing for you. It doesn't work, and even if you do it in the most convincing way, it still can't work because it's impossible." Considering the character is playing a priestess, using conversion of animals to a religion should make the most sense; if they're too boneheaded to understand why that wouldn't work, then that's a lost cause.

As for a player never listening/learning and insisting on doing things they where told NOT to do.. I have sadly encountered a few players just like it.. Some who where a little bad.. and others who where EXTREMELY bad. As for ERP stuff ( Erotic Role Play ) ... For the most part this kinda subject did not come up too often in my groups. However there was of course exceptions. When stuff does happen the gaming groups I was part of for the most part did the old "Fade to black" trick for that. Characters going at it is fine but wanting to go into detail is a bit much unless EVERYONE is fully ok with it. Then there is the chance that things might go too far.. In several different ways... Wont go into details on it but yea this group was for sure a group that was NOT for kids by any means, ( Not exactly against that sort of thing but.. The times I have been in a gaming group that decided to dabble in it.. Got either very awkward.. Went way too far... Or you know.. People kinda forgot we where playing D&D and started doing other things.. )
