The brat one is basically just someone that wants to be a self-centered main protag and wants the campaign to continue only when he's there, and by god there's so many of those. A good example of me experiencing this is basically in an rp, me and some other guy teamed up (Nobody else would and I didn't want to either but did to further the story) and our characters were supposed to protect something as a test and had to go against two dmpcs. Basically, the guy's character was meant to defend the lowest point, so nobody got further, and my character defended the object. My character got into a small scuffle with one of the dmpcs on the roof and had basically got it handled after she tossed him at the door of the roof, and the dmpc pretended to be unconscious since it was a tied roll, and my character was going to make sure she had the guy unconscious. This guy's character somehow ran all the way up for no reason, since he sure as hell wouldn't be able to hear the fight from the lowest floor, but to be in the spotlight, and my character dropped her guard a bit since she thought she won her fight and saw her partner was alright but annoyed, told him to get back down since he just left the rest of the building unguarded and only after he left did she realize that the other dmpc could have snuck past and her guard went up again with her being a bit angry but it was too late. After he left, the test was failed because guy pretending to be unconscious got up quickly then got the object during my character's realization and my character was very pissed and blamed the guy's character thoroughly. She admitted to her mistakes, but pointed out every mistake he made, which was far greater than her mistakes. Mind you, I was also a bit annoyed ooc as he wasn't even paying attention most of the time and only showed in a scene whenever he felt like it, ruining the flow of the rp and showing he didn't actually care about reading up or asking what happened, since by the time he tried to respond again with a response about defending the building, showing he didn't pay any attention at all, I let him know we lost and he typed damn ooc. I wanted so badly to rail him that if he isn't going to, at the very least, read up or ask what happened, why was he even in the rp to begin with? I didn't since there wouldn't have been a point in doing so since I would look like the bad guy, and it was meant to be for fun. But I would be lying that I wasn't super annoyed with him and wanted him gone from the rp.

Brat: "How DARE you heal me! RAPIST!" Also Brat: "How DARE you save my life from the rest of the party who want to murder me! I HATE YOU!" OP: "I'm so sorry, Brat. I had NO IDEA you were suicidal and wanted to die. OK, DM, can we ret-con this, so that I never healed him, give me back my spell slot, and I'll use it to heal up Gargoyle, so that Gargoyle can join the rest of the party in killing Brat? DM: "Oh, sure! Bye, bye, Brat! You're dead. Aren't you happy? It's EXACTLY what you asked for. Oh, and since you don't want to play with us, anymore, goodbye forever, it's been nice knowing you, and it's a pity we'll never see each other again. As soon as this campaign ends, I can take over DMing the other campaign, so nobody misses out. We certainly won't miss you. Now, scoot on out of here, and have a great day!" Brat: "Wait, what?! I don't want to leave! I'm SALTY, because I was REPLACED!" EVERYONE: "YES, you WERE replaced, because YOU CHOSE TO TAKE YOURSELF OUT OF THE GAME. And now, literally all of us want your character DEAD, and for YOU to LEAVE US ALONE, FOR GOOD. Also, your DMing SUCKS, so no loss there!" I say his DMing sucks, just because with a personality like that, I can't see him being any GOOD at it. And OP shouldn't say RIP to D&D. Finish this game without Brat, and start a new campaign without Brat. Heck, start TWO! Either find a new DM for the other game night, where Brat DMs, or be the DM, yourself. Say RIP to the Brat's story, by all means, but that's no reason to stop playing D&D with this group. Don't push yourself out of the group and leave Brat there to ruin it for everyone else. Push BRAT out of the group, and let the group enjoy themselves, without him bringing them all down.

I don't get the whole "finding goblin/kobold/whatever children" after a fight. In my opinion, a tribe whose home is being invaded by adventurers will send half the adults to fight while the other half evacuate the children. In most cases the defending adults would fight to the death, with maybe a possibility of trying to surrender if there is no other exit from the village. If my players are gonna kill everything no matter what and surround the village etc, full murdermode, I'm gonna make them see armed kids before it's over, but that's on them. I mean the job is to get the tribe out of their present location to reduce merchant harrassment. So a valid solution is to negotiate with the tribe to find a new home or even enlist them as security for caravans passing their home. Patroling the area and keeping other hazards out for some supplies from the caravans. Perhaps even leading to the Kobolds/Goblins/etc becoming a new trade stop for the caravans.

Big question here how did the baby even know how to use a fireball scroll! If this happened to me believe me I'm going to make the DM feel uncomfortable with the glare I'm going to give him. I've been known to glare at you that even trying to pretend to not know this it's difficult to do.
@davidtherwhanger6795 Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the culture of the tribe as to how they would react. Some cultures IRL have used kids as soldiers, shields, and even suicide bombers; on a regular basis. But this action was not thought out as a way to expose the tribe's culture to the Party, instead it was done as a 'Gotcha!' moment. A way to get at the Players by a confrontational DM. And as far as your last paragraph, most players don't think that far outside the box; but it is a very good, valid, and potentially long lasting solution to the problem. Something that should be rewarded with XP equal to every kobold in the tribe at least, or some XP and favors to be cashed later from the Kobolds, Merchants, or both. Plus the added bonus of it allows for more plot hooks in the future as relations break down, new tribe moves into the area the Kobolds are having trouble dealing with, other merchants trying to take over trade route and not pay, etc. It's good you can see the potential past the stabby, stabby option.

@@davidtherwhanger6795 Frankly I think the OP and their group would have preferred YOU as the DM of that game instead of the dummy they had to deal with! LOL
@shanerasmussen5225 Жыл бұрын
@@davidtherwhanger6795 Oh absolutely the culture affects all of that. I, as a GM/DM, don't do "all members of blank species are evil" though, which also means not all members of a given species have the same culture. I tend to create broad strokes overviews of how good aligned tribes operate vs evil aligned tribes, but even then it's not universal. I also make sure my world's pantheon has at least 1 good and 1 evil God for each race. As to the "out of the box" solutions. I have been... Blessed? Cursed? Blursed? With past players who went out of the box in so many fun ways all the time. I would absolutely grant full xp for a diplomatic solution, the bonus benefits like a discount from the merchants, some local fame, etc would kick in later on just as a surprise. Which could even come in the form of the regional Kobold Merchant Protection Patrol happening to be near by when the dice crap all over the party against some lucky pissants.
@davidtherwhanger6795 Жыл бұрын
@@shanerasmussen5225 Definitely a good idea to vary the different groups like goblins, orcs, elves, etc into different cultures. I like goblins a lot so I have done a lot more with them. Generally I like to let their environment be the decider. Such as cave goblins being night time raiders as they like the dark and being generally technologically backwards as they also tend to be isolationists. While forest goblins tend to be wolf riders that do control territory, will raid or trade depending on how their neighbors act, and do a lot of fur trading. Marsh and Swamp goblins are good swimmers and love the water, somewhat isolationists as the area does tend to keep outsiders out, use local poisons and like ambushes, but will trade for things they can't get. And the ones living in a Salt Marsh, well they eventually become Venice.

I get that people who play "difficult" characters are probably looking for some kind of attention and validation but you get so much more of that if you, like, actually play with your friends. I play plenty of characters that aren't team players so I've struggled with "how do I get my dumb little guy to go with the rest of the dumb little guys?? Because he sure doesn't want to." If so, then he had a responsibility to COMMUNICATE with his real-life friends and acquaintances. "Look, I'm having some ISSUES, and am not in the right head space right now. Please cut me some slack, and help me out." And also, "Clearly, I upset you all, since you all decided to kill my character. I APOLOGIZE." But... no. Second story: the doge is missing that the problem player/dm is not the prime dm. Prime dm kicked the op because they did not want to play the type if game prime dm wanted to run, and prime dm had a problem with problem dm breaking the rules and being petty. The op never actually complains about prime dm; i do not think they are the problem so much as having different tastes. I would like to have had that ended in a conversation about play style, but it might have but op was unwilling to change and just summarized. Generally, I support everyone trying to cut problems before they arise, so ending before it becomes a horror story is good. I like that prime dm did that. Play style can differ; prime dm might actually like the problem player/dm as a player because some groups like a competitive element in combat. This is not a "dm vs players" problem so much as a group of players who like the combat part of the game and just want a bunch of interesting combat scenarios. You can play d&d without a story; just going on dungeon dive after dungeon dive and that is still d&d. It is less popular for a style of play in recent years, but it is a valid and supported style of play. It is distracting in this style of play to have someone try to talk their way out of every fight, so I get why op was kicked (might have been the rest of the group's problem player).
@AuntLoopy123 Жыл бұрын
In that case, they need to communicate that. "Hey, OP, you're a good role-player, but we just want to dungeon crawl. It's not a good fit for the table, so sorry, but please find a different table that is more role-play oriented." That stings, but it's a lot better than, "GO AWAY! WE DON'T LIKE YOU!" for no reason.
@rynowatcher Жыл бұрын
@@AuntLoopy123 the story is presented in a confusing way; it is about a problem dm/player who is separate from the prime dm. They do not go into detail about the prime dm, so we have as much info on that as if op is a Hungarian astrophysicist who is on the run from aliens from the horse shoe nebula; make up whatever story you want about prime dm as there are less than 10 words in this entire story about them. Might even be accurate; who knows? The thing we can say from this story is that prime dm did not agree with problem dm/player when he countered op's ambush without a roll. The only facts we have support them being fair in rulings. I think the frank communication is good, but I would have liked to see the dm try to work with op, but op might have short changed that part of the story because they thought prime gm was reasonable in a request from prime gm to be more tactical and spend less time chewing the scenery. Pure speculation, bit it should say a lot that nothing bad is actually said about prime dm.
