Love the reaction guys! This was a good selection of snipes - they've gotten more prevalent as time has gone on because a) the skill level of the players has risen so much, and b) the equipment has improved. The underappreciated part of a lot of these goals is that most of them are done with no preparation, no hesitation - just "get the puck and shoot" and they STILL hit tiny open spots of the net. Also - the sound of the puck hitting the post or crossbar and going in is one of my very favourite sounds in sports. Like the crack of the bat for a well hit ball in baseball, it's addictive and satisfying and lets you know you just saw something amazing.

Never heard of top cheddar. Back in my days we either said he "roofed it" or called the shots a "bottle knocker" (knocking the goalies water bottle off the top of the net)

Laine hasn't had any luck for a few years. If he ever finds his love of the game and starts giving a darn again his shot is still top of the league. Mathews and Bedard have a toe drag wrister that is very deceptive. Laine is just pure velocity. I've been watching for over 30 years and I've only heard top cheese maybe 5 times.
@Timmycoo11 ай бұрын
Kane, MacKinnon and Laine all have quick releases. They all had multiple clips when you were asking around the ~8min mark. Sharp angle goals aren't too uncommon but most players will try and bank it off the goalie than short side from a hard angle right in.

Alex Kovalev is one of the most talented players to ever play the game. He was amazing at picking the tiniest opening above the shoulder while shooting from the corner. Especially on the powerplay.

I don’t know if this was mentioned before but the net is often called the “4 by 6” because it is 4 feet high and 6 feet wide.

Great vid! You guys should react to Evgeni Malkin, he's played behind Crosby since 2006 so he's underrated, but He's a top 3 player of the 2000s, behind Ovi and Crosby and is such an entertaining player to watch.

Goalies have adapted the Butterfly style that covers the bottom 3/4 of the net, shooters now spend hours practicing shots that will hit over the shoulder and just under the crossbar. On any given night, the resounding crescendo of pucks clanging harmlessly off the pipes fill the arena, but a few get through for a great highlight reel
@laurentco11 ай бұрын
We’re seeing more goals scored between the goalie’s head, shoulder, the post and the crossbar all the time. The shooters are getting so good they can bank it off the goalie’s mask and in. McDavid comes to mind, among many others.

A number of years ago, the goal nets were made a few inches shallower, so its a more common occurrence for the puck to hit the back of the net and come right back out.

Snipe - Sniper. Perfectly placed shot.
@FelixTalksPuck11 ай бұрын
With the technology of the hockey sticks these days (the flex, kickpoints, all that), snipes are pretty much a regular occurrence in the modern NHL. The key to remember is that there's more skill in the NHL now than there's ever been, IMO. It's a combination of the sticks just getting better and more guys practicing their shots and the release (how quick the puck leaves their sticks) With the league only getting more competitive, guys are getting much better with their shots. So, what's even more impressive about these types of goals is that while, to most, they are obviously very accurate impressive shots, to these athletes it's just another day at the office. Goes to show how much skill is in the league now.

I love how in a lot of these you can tell that the goalie was CONVINCED he had everything covered and there was no way the shooter could possibly score. 10:42 - Damo, did you mean to say that shot was like lightning because Kucherov played for the Lightning??
@KevinQuinn8111 ай бұрын
Also, still not sure you picked this part up but "snipe" is derived in this context from snipers; those who shoot long-barreled rifles from long range to hit a small target.

re: snipe - it makes more sense when you realize a 'sniper' is just someone with a very accurate shot (nothing to do with the top bar) . . . in the NHL skills competition, held annually, they put 10" dia targets in the 4 corners (which is why btwn the goalie's leg = 5-hole 😊) and the 'snipers' try & hit them. No surprise . . they ALL hit them . . then it becomes fastest time . . last yr Brock Nelson won in 12 secs Hockey 'newbies' (not you guys) might say the shooters are 'lucky' but the ALL the goalies study the snipers. No McDavid . . old video , okay but . . no Stamkos !!! He's top tier sniper. Also . . "cheese & cheddar" is only one specific commentator not a common term . . my personal fave ('cause, don't forget, this is right when the goal is scored & the commentator yells something . . like the now famous soccer/football "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOL") is: "That went straight to the attic where Gramma keeps the peanut butter" . . yup, he said it . . lolol Finally for any Brit to understand ?? . . we used to think Darts is just luck . . you can't 'aim' at the tiny spot !! . . 😅

This compilation honestly underrepresents Ovi’s snipes but that’s partially due to the fact that so many of his goals have been shot from the same spot in the left circle so its a bit repetitive footage wise. You can either take this as he’s lazy or you can point out he’s been doing this for 18 years in the NHL and still no goalie has been able to super consistently stop it
@riff5fki11 ай бұрын
To stress just how many: there’s an 8 minute long video of just Ovi’s one timers
