There is a line in the movie Space Jam that was hilarious. Michael Jordan is playing a round of golf with Bill Murray and Larry Bird. Bill Murray is talking to MJ and Bird about maybe trying out for the NBA himself because he can play basketball. Bird and MJ just kind of laugh it off. Bill says to MJ "It's because I'm white, isn't it?" MJ responds with, "Larry's white, so what," and Murray says, "Larry's not white. Larry's clear."

After Bird fell and fractured his cheek during that Celtic/Pacer game, he went to the locker room and the trainer told him he was done with that game. When the trainer stepped away to get something, Bird decided to go back out to the bench and told the coach he was going back in to win the game. Like his father, Larry never let pain prevent him from going back to work.

Larry Bird was said to “not be able to jump over the Sunday newspaper” yet he made up for it with an off the charts basketball IQ, unbelievable hustle and tireless work ethic. The Hick from French Lick who came from nothing proved it isn’t where you come from, but rather where you work to get to is what matters. He does. He even puts himself at center and won the Championship MVP. Years later when Kareem was in his last years and not the player he once was, Riley told Magic he needed to start shooting more and take charge of the scoring. It's hard to overstate the impact of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird on basketball. The NCAA tournament, which had suffered low ratings for years, saw the highest rated college basketball game of all time when Magic and Bird battled each other in the 1979 championship game. As the respective faces of the Showtime Lakers and the relentless Celtics they resuscitated an NBA that had been sorely lacking in competitive rivalries. Of the ten Finals trophies handed out from 1980-1989, EIGHT went to the Lakers or Celtics, and three were decided with the rivals squaring off head to head for the title. Bird won three MVPs in a row from 84-86, and Magic won in 87, 89, and 90. So, they took a league lacking in spectacle, and gave it maybe the greatest decade of spectacle we've seen in sport. Bona fide legends.

In the playoff game against the Indiana Pacers, Bird didn't just come back and play with a fractured cheek. He also had a concussion and double vision. He went on to rack up an additional 17 points and lead the Celtics back to a victory and probably played the next 2-3 games with double vision. Larry Bird isn't human.

Larry told his team that they should always be ready to get the ball from his, because if they're open, he WILL get it to them. He could make great shots, but he was always looking to see who had the best position and he knew where everyone was all the time. I've heard other top tier players from Bird's time say he was just as dangerous without the ball as with it. Some players would slack off when they didn't have the ball so they didn't have to be guarded as closely, but they couldn't rest against Larry. If you're looking for more Bird footage, there is a passing highlights video that is amazing, and also a Bird trash-talk video. Sadly I can't find the exact links, but "Making the Case" is a great one and here is the link for that - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqnJZYWwpMh7hJo.

Some Bird stats... In rookie year he came up 4th in the season MVP voting, his second year he won the championship and came up second in the MVP voting. Also came up second in his 3rd and 4th years and then won MVP the following 3 seasons after that. He won 3 championships, 12 All-Star appearances. Won 3 3 pt shooting contests. One point away from a Quadruple Double. He is the first 50-49-90 player and did that from 85 to 87. Most impressive is in 85 he injured his back and he played from 85 to 92 with compressed nerves in his back, and had one of his back discs removed. Before every game his doctor's had to fix his back just so he could stand for four to six hours to play ball. Side note: Michael Jordan was a rookie in 84. Jordan didn't win anything until Bird, Johnson and Kareem retired.

Yeah he played with a fractured face. The doctor looked at him in the locker room and told him he was done for the day and needed to go to the hospital. Larry agreed but the game was on the tv and Larry was watching the Pacers celebrating and he started getting angry. Then the doctor went into the other room to get something and Larry snuck out and ran back onto the court and checked himself into the game. The doctor came back, figured out what happened, and ran onto the court and started telling yelling to everyone that he’s playing with a fractured face, and that’s how the tv announcers found out so quickly.

If you like passing = please see "greatest passer ever - with re-edit" and you will see how great Bird was as a passer. Bird had point guard court vision, could rebound like a power forward and shoot lights out from anywhere on the court. Bird won ROY in his first year and was 4th in MVP voting. For the next 8 years in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Bird created the 50-40-90 shooting club and did it 2 seasons in a row. Underrated fact:there was no game or anything else scheduled for the night of Bird's retirement ceremony. Also underrated, how big he is. He is over 6 foot, 9 inches... Like Jokic, you're not supposed to be that big and have a passing and shooting touch like that. Check out the Making The Case video. Bird is a rabbit hole of info. The story goes that he learned his high release jumper, and trash talk, from his first job at the local hotel. He would play hoops after his shift, with the older, black worker. He learned his high release jump shot so they couldn't block it.

Larry Bird won MVP three times. What makes it special is he did it in consecutive years. Bird was voted MVP in 1984, 1985 and 1986. After basketball he was named NBA Coach of the Year in 1998. He ultimately went on to Basketball Operations and was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2012 with the Pacers. He was a 12-time NBA All-Star in 13 seasons with the Celtics. He was a 3-time NBA champion with Boston in 1981, 1984 and 1986. But, he excelled everywhere, before and since the Celtic days.

The deeper you go with Larry Bird the crazier it becomes. He played half of his career with broken back, nobody speaks about his passing if you watch the clip that he is the greatest passer , it's amazing , he is better passer than Magic , he's better shooter than the percentage shoes . Nobody is so good in mach wining shots ever. He fu*ked up his finger before even start his NBA career . He was brutal trashtalker you can"t get it from one video , but there is the case for the goat , and a series of stories about him from the other NBA stars . This man if he was with the teammates like Magic or Jordan and was healthy may exclude all the other from the goat conversation. Especially in today game that is like tailor made for him. When asked about their top 5 Jordan starts with Larry, Magic starts with Larry and LeBron starts with Larry. And don't forget Larry played 13 seasons , one of them only 6 games due to operations , and the last 7 years of his career with a broken back that wasn't ever repaired , he never takes painkillers and... watch , seriously , for me Michael Jordan was the best, but after learning more and more about Bird , i'm not so sure anymore .

In another, Isiah Thomas says, "If you took all of us, Magic, Michael, myself and Bird and locked us all in a room, Larry would probably be the one to walk out of the room at the end of the day."

As one who is keen on Larry Bird and quite enjoys your channel, I’m truly glad you have taken the opportunity to react to this highlight video. Bird is amazing, the Bird-Johnson story is inspiring, and the Celtic teamwork from those years (especially 1986) is great fun and highly educational. Thanks for your contributions to KZbin.

You can't mention Larry Bird with mentioning Magic Johnson and vice versa. They played against each other in the NCAA college national championship game, they both get drafted into the NBA the same year to two teams that had deep hatred amd rivalry against each other for years prior, and Bird and Magic rivalry wqs so intense that they both would xheck the papers (tjis was before ESPN) the next day to see how each other did. They hated one another until they got to know each other when they made a converse basketball shoe commercial together. They later became great friends. So great that when Magic was diagnosed with AIDS and did his press conference to retire from basketball and most people turned their backs on him, including some members of his own team, one of the first people to call him to ask how he was doing was Larry Bird Larry Bird amd Magic Johnson saved the NBA. Two great documentaries are Magic and Larry, A Courtship of Rivals and ESPN 30 for 30 about the rivalry between the Lakers and the Celtics. They played in the NBA when the NBA was at it'd best.

You truly need to react to "A Courtship of Rivals". It's a documentary about Larry and Magic, how they saved the NBA and went from bitter rivals to best of friends. They are so connected that the NBA presented them with lifetime achievement awards on the same night. There was even a Broadway play about them titled "Magic Bird." A Courtship of Rivals is the best sports documentaries I've ever seen.

Also, add onto Larry’s greatness people always talk about how Michael Jordan was the best trash talker of all time. We all know that Michael Jordan said that he learned everything from Larry Bird but just look at what each player did. Michael Jordan would do the craziest shit to you and then afterwards we talk shit. However, Larry Bird would tell you exactly what the fuck he’s gonna do to you and even though you had that knowledge he would still do exactly what he said he would do. There’s a reason that James worthy said he would rather guard Michael Jordan over Larry Bird because Michael Jordan was going to make you look slow, but Larry was going to make you look fucking stupid

Not only did he suffer a broken cheek in that game, but when he was in the locker room, he told the trainer he understood he wasn't going back in, but when the trainer left the room, he ran out of the locker room back onto the court. He was later also diagnosed with a concussion... and already was playing with a broken back from a previous injury.

The Boston Celtics/Los Angeles Lakers rivalry in the 1980s was awesome! The Celtics' style was slow and methodical (Larry Bird, Kevin McCale, Robert Parrish...), while the Lakers' style was fast-paced and up-tempo (Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper, James Worthy, and the great Kareem Abdul Jabbar). Even the coaches had polar opposite styles/personalities. It was must-see tv for sports fans in America!

Lakers great James Worthy said, "I'd rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird. Michael would make you look slow, but Larry would make you look stupid." You guys also gotta react to one of the Larry Bird trash-talking compilations told by his opponents. Bird would come out of a time-out when they'd called a designed play and tell the guy(s) guarding him exactly what the play was gonna be, and then make the shot anyway. During pregame warm-ups he'd tell an opponent who he knew would be guarding him "I feel like about... 43 tonight," then he'd come out and score exactly 43 points by early in the 4th quarter, then check himself out of the game.

Bird and Magic are the saviors of basketball and they both deserve their own coverage by you all! The two players with the highest win percentage ever is Bird and Magic! Check out Clayton Crowly making the case and react to those. He doesn't say who he thinks is the greatest but he does make the case for the top 13 he thinks deserve to claim it. Bird and Magic are obviously 2 that he has in that list of 13! For a real good reason too! Without them there would be no NBA! They saved it and a lot of the people that came after learned from them!

That game in which Bird came back from getting treatment in the locker room is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Larry Bird's toughness goes. He's been tough ever since high school when his father committed suicide. He played through so many injuries that other players wouldn't have had the guts to play through. There is a KZbin video out there that describes all the various injuries Larry Bird played through. I think you should critique that one also to get the true essence of the man. In Boston he is a God!!!
