Julius "Dr. J" Erving was the first to dunk from the foul line in 1976--he repeated it again as you saw it here in the 80s--he's the best ever for dunking. Go back and look at "Spud" Webb--no. 4 in the red uniform and understand that he was just under 5 feet 7 inches tall!--the others are at least 6'4" and many much taller than that.

Yeah but that Aaron Gordon dunk over the mascot is prob my fav ever in the contest and Lavine v Gordon the best contest. Dunk contest is usually pretty meh. When everything's been done already, guys start relying on gimmicks that are usually lame. And 50s are given out like candy which kinda cheapens things. Big stars don't typically enter these days too, or guys who are known for incredible in-game dunks. Every now n then you get a Lavine v Gordon though, two supremely athletic guys nailing awesome dunks like it's easy. So that's fun.

The Slam Dunk Contest was actually an invention of the ABA. In 1976, they held the first ever professional slam dunk contest at the halftime of their All-Star Game. "Dr. J" Julius Erving won it but the ABA was merged with the NBA after that season and we didn't get another All-Star Game dunk contest until 1984. Then in 1986, it was folded into a series of All-Star festivities the night before the All-Star Game called All-Star Saturday Night where there was also a 3-Point shooting competition. Now there is an entire weekend of games and competitions on Friday and Saturday leading up to the All-Star game Sunday including a celebrity game, a rising stars game, G League dunk and 3-Point contests, the G League All-Star Game, a skills challenge, the 3-Point competition, and the dunk contest. These days the dunk contest is judged by a panel of 5 former players and celebrities. They'll give a score from 6 to 10 (I think, and not sure of degrees between the whole numbers) and add up the total for the dunk score. They've tweaked the number of dunks per round and number of rounds over the years but description Damo found at the beginning sounds current. Y'all watch come February and they'll tell you. For a number of years in the NBA, the slam dunk was actually outlawed because the players were more powerful than the rims, backboards, and stanchions and it was deemed a safety risk. Spud Webb was all of 5 foot 6 inches. The mere fact that he COULD dunk was impressive, let alone the stuff he was able to do while he was up there. Jordan actually copied Dr. J on the dunk from the free throw line. That's the dunk Dr. J used to win the ABA dunk contest and he brought it in for that first NBA contest in 1984 to bring back the memories but it wasn't enough to win the title that year. Jordan then came in and put so much more air under it than anyone had seen before and just flew away (although his foot was over the line which always bugged me a tiny bit but no one I've ever seen has pulled off that dunk better). I pretty sure Cedric Ceballos could see SOMETHING through or under that "blindfold." Sure was hella fun to watch at the time though. 7:50 - The guy heading the ball to Amare for that dunk was his point guard at the time, and all time great, Steve Nash. Nash grew up in Canada but his mom was Welsh and his dad was from Tottenham so he is a massive Spurs supporters. He played soccer through high school but once he found an aptitude for basketball, he had to make the choice of heading to London to pursue soccer or go to college in the states to play basketball. He went to Santa Clara University in California, made the NBA hall of fame and is considered one of the best, if not the best, point guards of all time so he probably made the right decision but dude does have some sweet skills with his feet and head. Best dunk contest overall? 198, Michael vs. Dominique. Injuries had prevented a proper showdown between the 2 for a few years but they were the best dunkers of the 80s by far and a fair number of these were from that contest. Michael got a little bit of home cooking since it was at Chicago Stadium but it was a doozy. Honorable mention to some of those great individual performances from Vince Carter in 2000, Zach Lavine in 15 and 16, and Dwight Howard in 2008 where he broke out the Superman cloak. (Note from later, I had forgotten that Tracy McGrady and Steve Francis were also in 200 so you definitely should check that out.) The dunk contest has gotten a bad rap for many years as being boring and needing to either be innovated or done away with entirely because everybody feels like they've seen it all before and there's not a lot of room in the space to innovate (and like Damo said, they make it look so easy even though it's not). Also, the stars don't do it anymore like they used to for fear of injury or looking bad. My take is, as a competition to see who the best dunker is, yeah, it's kinda lame. But as an exhibition to see absolutely unholy feats of inhuman athleticism, it doesn't get much better and I'll watch every year.

Context is everything when it comes to the dunk contest. A lot of dunks that might seem "alright" were first-ever attempts, Spudd is 5'6", Dwight is almost 7-feet tall, etc. Also, Jason Richardson is the most overlooked dunk contest champion ever! He was robbed of a third straight crown my some mid tier dunks from Fred Jones.

I can't believe you guys never took note of the heights of some of these guys. Average height in the NBA is about 6'7", and Aaron Gordon is 6'10" and Dwight Howard is 6'11". They can do things that were once thought of as impossible from bigger players. And on the other end, Spud Webb is 5'7". To be able to alley-oop the ball to himself on a 10-foot goal was just as, if not more impressive. Not only that, but one of his opponents in that contest was his Atlanta teammate, Dominique Wilkins, who was the league's dunk king before Jordan arrived.

Lavine V Gordon is probably the best year ever. There was also a year someone blew out a birthday candle before dunking...twas a silly year. But I wish they showed the dunks in chronological order. You would have seen the evolution of the dunk better and the entire intensity of Lavine V Gordon would have been highlighted. They showed all the dunks but split them up. So many of those dunks happened within a span of about 30 min which is what made that year so intense. 50 after 50 after 50....

The first dunk on the video (1988 Michael Jordan) was did the free throw dunk as a tribute to Dr. J (Julius Erving 1984, which he also did back in 1976 for the ABA Slam Dunk Contest). I would probably say the 1988 contest was the best one. It had Dominique Wilkins vs. Michael Jordan. To set the stage, in 1985 Wilkins beat Jordan. Then in 1986, Jordan didn't participate and in 1987 Wilkins didn't. In 1988, two of the most dynamic dunkers in the NBA were both participating on the same court. Before you try to do your own dunk contest, post a video of you two playing HORSE. (In case you don't know the rules, one person calls their shot and if they make it the second person has to replicate the same shot. If they don't make it, they receive a letter. If the first person misses their shot, the second person gets to call their shot and the first has to replicate it, if made. This continues until someone spells HORSE and is deemed the loser.)

It's important to note that the rules have changed which resulted in the freedom to be more creative. In the early competitions (ones with Jordan, Spud, Nique) that you only had 2 tries and if you didn't land one you basically would be out of it. Later on, not sure what year, but they went to an unlimited number of tries but had like 5 min or something for as many tries as they needed. I haven't watched one live in a few years so I think they changed it back to a limited number of attempts. Have to remember there were some dunks in here that are awesome but at times had to sit through watching them try and fail at it a few times first.

I wish this video was chronological so you could track the evolution. As it is, it just makes a lot of the 80s/90s dunks look quite shit, when at the time they were mindblowing.

Any dunk contest from 1986 to 1992. After the 90's (outside of Vince Carter in 2000) the best NBA dunkers quit participating in the dunk contest so it was not good until recently. Put it like this, in the late 80's all 90's players were fighting to get picked for the dunk contest, after Vince Carter until recently there wasn't any good dunkers so the contest almost got dropped

The Cedric Ceballos blindfold was not legit. He admitted years later that he could see through it. But the Dee Brown, he closed his eyes and shielded them with his arm.

There have been many good years for the dunk contest, the 80's being foremost while watching this, the early 2000's with Vince Carter, even this year(22-23) was good with the winner being a guy from outta nowhere to win

2016 is the best contest I’ve ever witnessed. Zach Levine and Aaron Gordon literally went dunk for dunk. Honestly you could have given the win to either one and it would have been justified. You guys should also check out Max McClung dunks from last years contest the kid went dummy

it is said that Ceballos could kind of see when he did the blind fold dunk the greatest year is either the 2016 mentioned, but the vince carter one it wasnt much of a competition, vince was that incredible. Also i dont remember the year but i think 86 Domonique vs MJ also great. Also yall could do one on 8ft rims,

Yep. Just wanna voice my opinion too. Already been said, but 2016 Aaron Gordon vs Zach Lavine is the best all time. There’s other great performances, but their dual was spectacular

The contest rules isn't the same for every season though....they switch them up often Also most people cannot dunk at all so it is generally seen as very impressive. This particular contest is usually the highlight of the all star weekend especially if all star caliber players are involved.

If I could dunk. I would do a freeze frame. Where the guys palm the ball for their photos but in mid air and reverse…then my next would be the “walking on water”move with the 540 victor dunk without the spin. Tell me I wouldn’t save the dunk contest
@logantheslogan6528

And my third would be a tap off the glass 360 pump reverse without the pump. Just freeze…glide and hold the ball down until I get to the other side. Then YAM that bit…y’all tellin me that’s not some max mclung ish

My only gripe with this video is that it isn't chronological order. Would have been cool to see the evolution of what was considered a 50 point dunk year to year instead of just randomly assorted.
