And if you don't want to express your tastes in certain medias because of the actions of others hindering our enjoyment, then you are a -fucking coward- person who needs to not let the bad apples of the batch sour the tastes you would otherwise enjoy. Set your own boundaries and preferably be mindful of others, engage with the aspects that you like and actively set bars to limit the ones you don't. You don't have to make every single thing you dislike, or even just disagree with a stupid crusade. Some people might enjoy that, but you're probably not that fun to hang out with if all you do is shit on others with no nuance or humour.

Unfortunately, if the bad outweighs the good, then there should be absolutely no reason to stay in that fandom. Such as was the case with Steven Universe. I left the fandom permanently in favor of the Unikitty fandom, and it was the best decision I think I have ever made in my life. Steven Universe was a great show, but the fandom was fucking godawful. Even after choosing to ignore the bad parts, my breaking point came when a Steven Universe fan artist on Instagram turned out to be a neo-Nazi, or a "social nationalist" as she called herself. It made me sick to the core, and that anger will never leave me until I die. There is no point in staying in the fandom anymore, as there's just too many terrible people on any social media platform. I'm *DONE* with Steven Universe. And to anyone stuck in a bad fandom, I urge you to get out while you still can. It is not worth staying.

Someone on Tumblr made a great post about how the size of a fandom correlates to how toxic it could be. I saw it years ago, but it boiled down to this: If a fandom consists of 100 active fans, but only 10% are toxic, then the fandom is relatively positive. However, the larger a fandom becomes, the more unavoidable it’s toxic fans are. Imagine a fandom with tens of millions of fans…

Out of all the fandom toxicity, I think Helluva Boss/Hazbin’s is the most painful to witness when you consider how many people dropped off the show out of exhaustion for the fandom or creator’s behavior. I had a lot of friends who were big on both shows (especially HB) slowly fall out of love until quitting entirely because the rampant bullying was too much. I’m not a fan of the show, but I don’t like telling my friends what to like, so seeing them bullied by fans (or even the crew themselves) and having that leave a lasting impact sucks. It’s one of the few instances where I think the “loud minority” argument doesn’t work here, because this is behavior that’s enabled and normalized, not discouraged.

I think Steven Universe is still much worse, simply because people told artists to kill themselves because they got the height ''wrong''. Fun fact: They have no canon height. A Toxic Fanbase cuts both ways. It creates a barrier of entry for new people finding out about it, scaring them away with their behavior. But it can also Streisand Effect itself, getting the show even more attention *because* of the fanbase's behavior. But I can speak on the first because, as a caveboy, I watched Steven Universe for "Lady Sing Song Make Brain Happy". But then when I wanted to get into talking about my enjoyment of the music with other people, looking at how the fanbase treated even the *slightest* difference of opinion made me quit and then subsequently outright and baselessly hate the show and the entire community along with it before divorcing myself from it entirely.

I knoe discussing a piece of media with likeminded people can be comforting and fun, so maybe to that end we need to collectively make a bigger push to create online spaces where harassment and bullying aren't tolerated, with clear rules and swift, no exceptions bans if some people can't behave.

Part of the backlash on Netflix Voltron comes from paratextual elements. One thing that got people on tilt, was that *initially*, the VA for Shiro was under the impression that Shiro was somewhere in the same age as at *least* Keith, but then it turned out he was WAY older, and that was the first ship controversy. Second was that Shiro was depicted as gay, which is fine - but his lover back on Earth was killed. (Bury your gays). Third: VAs were interacting with fanart, and the Klance ship was very popular, but ultimately the showrunners didn't support Klance in the actual media. It was just the VAs appreciating the artworks and stories - so you can see how the conflation began

i think the reason this happens so often to cartoon fans, especially those who like kid-friendly cartoons, is because the cartoon itself allows them to almost age regress a bit. the cartoon, in a way, gives them (and maybe their inner child) a sort of “safe space”. this isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but it is something that’s simply impossible for the internet to provide. the internet is, almost by definition, everything. this means that it includes both the best and worst sides of humanity. take rule 34, for instance. it states that every character from every fandom, will, at some point, have NSFW content made of them. this isn’t a good or a bad thing, it’s just a consequence of how the internet works. however, a lot of those toxic fans simply can’t understand this. because these cartoons give fans that safe space they so desperately crave, the fans do everything in their power to “clean up” their safe space, especially online. and when something is perceived as “invading” that safe space, like r34 art or someone having a different headcanon, it’s treated as a personal violation. toxic fans completely misinterpret the point of the internet. the Internet is not a safe space for you or for anyone, it’s the collective thoughts, good and bad, of everyone who uses it. trying to purge any of the “bad thoughts” that you disagree with is a sisyphusian task.

I will give the Steven Universe fandom a bone here. I think that the reason they are so insanely defensive about the show is because they associate some criticism it gets with homophobia. There are a lot of conservative losers who like to dunk on the show just because it is so supportive of the Lgbt community. A pitfall that some fans can fall into is that they perceive most if not all criticism as just homophobic jerks, which is simply not true. The same can also be said about Helluva Boss and Owl House. I think they have just set up their defenses towards jerks like that so much, to the point where they are being jerks to people who have honest criticisms. I'm not defending their behavior, I'm just trying to give an explanation to it.

I am so sorry to hear this guy got turned off from Helluva Boss completely because people attacked him over criticisms he had over season 2. The show has been up and down lately, and fans should acknowledge that. But understandably, while fandoms don't ruin the quality of a cartoon, it does ruin it's reputation and whether or not more folks will come in to watch, which can result in it either dying off or just outright fading into obscurity, which is arguably a death sentence for anything fictional. It exists, but nobody's gonna remember it.

For myself, the biggest example is "Star Wars". I understand the shitlords that permeate online discourse are in the minority; but it is so persistently loud and vile, that I ended up dropping anything pertaining to the franchise. It also didn't help that I had two bad experiences materialize outside of the internet. And the sad thing is I fervently followed the saga for over 20 years. Another example that I don't think was touched upon here was how someone's appreciation for a program(s) can be ruined by abusive relationships. e.g. I have one friend who can't even enjoy the film "Labyrinth" anymore because he was SAd by a partner who obsessed over it.

I'm glad it's not completely forgotten, but it really sucks that it was treated so horribly during its run, both by TMNT fans and by Nickelodeon. I absolutely loved the new powers they gave the turtles, and the new characters they made for the show (mostly Draxum, I *wish* we had more time to see him bonding with the other brothers after he joined the family.) I know it's highly unlikely, but I really hope this show can get another chance someday, even if it's just as another direct-to-Netflix thing. Then when I was older and had more internet access (I grew up in the 80s/90s), I did join a few small fan groups on ye olde Geocities and MySpace, but then Twitter and Facebook came along and I think there was a shift in how fandoms operated. While nothing as drastic as what you experienced, I did start to loose interest in Helluva Boss as time went on, I think word “underwhelming” would describe most of season 2 very well. Problems from season 1 (undermining emotional moments with jokes, Millie being just there, pacing being weird, etc) alongside some new stuff (Striker’s return was very underwhelming when you contrast it with season 1, Stolas x Blitzo being sorta whitewashed and few others) just created an experience that made me loose a lot of hype from season 1.

I'm glad to see someone talking about this, I do believe that a majority of a show or game can be affected by fandom, a famous example I believe is Undertale. That game that has spawned multiple Aus, especially Flower Fell where the shippers basically killed it by harassing the creator I do hope however that an upcoming game I adore Billie Bust Up doesn't fall down this rabbit hole. Because the people behind it are putting so much effort and it's a really creative concept of a musical platformer game. I know its not a show per say but I feel like its important to bring up considering that it does have people who worked on shows, Namely Alastor and Angel Dust's voice actors to voice two main characters. (Btw interested in doing a subject on Billie Bust Up? Idk if you like talking about games but I feel like this one is interesting considering it's inspired by musical shows and movies)

I've also stopped watching Helluva Boss because it started making me genuinely uncomfortable with how it was handling abuse/neglect, and the fandom would eat that shit up and glorify it. I try to avoid all fandom affairs so I can just enjoy the shows I like, most of what people have to say is worthless anyways, but Helluva Boss drama would always be shoved onto my social media feeds and it got tiring.
@howellaboutno9500 Жыл бұрын
Wdym how it’s handling abuse and neglect? Real quick though if ur just super sensitive it’s not worth having a conversation about but I’m a bit confused.
@G7ue Жыл бұрын
@@howellaboutno9500 If you honestly don't see the issue in the relation between Blitzo and Stolas, then yeah, its probably not worth having a conversation about. But to explain, abuse is more than just physical violence. Blitzo is an unabashed sociopath who uses and manipulates Stolas's emotions to get what he wants. Meanwhile the show portrays Blitzo as if we are meant to sympathize with him while he's actively doing these things. Having a shitty life does not justify being an asshole. Its like they are trying to copy Bojack Horseman, but they unironically think Bojack is the good guy, and don't handle any of the sensitive topics with tact, rather breaking it up with dick jokes.

If anything, the critical side of Helluva Boss fandom kills it for me because it's come to now loudly and forcefully outnumber the people who genuinely like it. For every post constructively criticizing Viv's writing there have been a dumpster truck load of posts calling for her to die because Ozzie isn't a rapey boy and like, Christ on a stick it's...not great.
@Haphu15 Жыл бұрын
The die hard haters in helluva boss should not be pay attention, there are many depictions of hell and many are not lore accurate, the team can take creative liberties for is as if that concept is hard to acknowledge for them Also on the asmodeus part, people went nuts for a character encouraging consent and that he shouldn't cause he is the embodiment of lust, but this is new, the anime iruma kun takes demons from hell lore and aren't close to what they are lore wise, they even have characters that go by the name asmodeus and one talks about consent to the protagonists, none of this is new but people go crazy for accuracy when I show is free of depicting their own version
@KITSUMOX Жыл бұрын
hi im heavily critical of hb, ozz supporting an idea of heavy consent is awesome! its a nice take on lust and what seems to be acceptable to even a deadly sin. however. hb is no stranger to rape jokes, and vivzie herself is no stranger to weirdly romantizing assault in stuff like hazbin. this makes ozz's message feel a little void to me ozz should not be a rapey guy - its nice that he isnt, but when your main ship of the show is built off rape i just cant appreciate it as much

@alexadamns8115 I agree that blizt x stolas being rape doesn't make sense, the whole point in their relationship was made in an agreement to had sex and for blizt to still use the grimoire, both parties agreed to it even if they want to be more there was consent in the agreement

Anime and cartoons have so many toxic fandoms. Some can be good, but most of them are the toxic fans who ruin everything we enjoy. Can’t we all just have fun watching cartoons.
@cosygoose1813 Жыл бұрын
Ikr, I feel like a good way to avoid that is to avoid shippers. They are by far the worst ones. And lgbtq shows, its mostly not the shows fault but people will often defend a show if it has lgbtq in it on principle and not on whether they actually watched it. Some shows get away with this like dragon prince at the start but then they got cocky.

Well, every cartoon will have some rude people but it can also have some talented people in it but it depends on what cartoon and how it's doing in writing and storytelling. This can also talk about video games as well and a toxic fandom that I don't like which I'll not name will get so angry because the series changes too much and I myself really like the gameplay and changes to the series but with the one game that's getting a remastered in the future I might give it a chance as long as the fans respect other people opinions on liking the newer games in the series. Also, I'm a bit nervous about posting my little fan work for a cartoon series I like but I'm scared that the fans will think it's too weird but I'm gonna do my best and be brave wish me luck everyone.

I think a bad fandom can put a sour taste in your mouth when you try to enjoy the show as every good moment will be blown up to a stupid degree but I also believe shows that develop any form of loud fandom starts to decline in quality as the creators start to write for and around them

It is weird because while I have had bad experiences with fandoms in this sense, my own experiences have been far more on the polar opposite. I can't tell you how many times I got jumped on for liking certain FIM episodes, or felt judged for admitting the issues of Helluva Boss didn't bother me, to the point where I struggle to watch HB now, not because I dont like it, but because getting jumped for liking it got in my head so much. It's to the point where I admit I struggled to deal with the knowledge that "how dare you criticize what I like" is a real thing, when I've gotten so many more examples of "don't like what I don't like".

Hey I'm so sorry that you're a victim of the Hellaverse fandom. I really enjoy the show, but the fandom tires me out so I try my hardest to avoid anything beyond fanart and harmless discussion threads. My gf is a huge Steven Universe fan but avoided social media while she watched it, and now she's showing me the series and I'm enjoying it too. One way we air our grievances about the fandoms is through discussing how fans get caught in echo chambers, get so obsessed, and forget to touch grass. Its a really interesting topic so thank you for covering this. I can't believe the HellaVerse fandom decided to be ableist to you and out you for no reason-jesus christ. Anyways much love and thank you for this video!

There have been times where I got to experience pieces of media, but when I look online and see how much people “hate it”, it then makes me question myself, my tastes, my own sanity, etc. Because of this, I’m afraid to talk about the things I like in fear of retaliation and backlash, and if there’s things I dislike that I wanna talk about, nobody listens or even cares.
@michaeleanthonyjr Жыл бұрын
I generally avoid being involved with social circles regarding media that I enjoy, so ultimately I've never had an experience that made me want to avoid being involved with a creative work, at least not last time I checked, maybe I had that with Pokemon or something. Because I've never had such an experience, it's hard for me to see things from that perspective, but I do believe that mental health is important. So while I still think that a show should be judged on its merits rather than how other people might make you feel about it, I won't say that choosing to distance yourself from it would be invalid. I think

7:30 Agreed, people who are kinda weirded out by the fandom associated with the show should just see the show for themselves and talk to people who obviously weren't left by their fathers. Its not that hard. I will say I have way more sympathy for those who have been directly negatively affected by certain fandoms. There can be a lot of trauma and heartache associated with falling out of love with something you were apart of because of people who weren't raised right.

For me something as important as the nature of the product itself for the fans it attracts. It's how its creators and other fans react to misbehavior in the community. There are cases where the lack of action in policing and holding people accountable for bad behavior may lead to it worsening. I see this even outside the Cartoon community with social movements that when raised criticism just saying "it's just a toxic minority". And doing nothing about the problematic people.

Most of the time...yes. When most modern showrunners, producers, or writers (that used their cartoon as a therapy section) pandering to a group on tumblr or twitter as the series go's on, you get toxic people who are cartoon stans that will literally harass or doxed you for having different ships, or being accused of "racism" or "homophobe" or "sexist" for asking questions or having a common sense. It's why I stay away from most modern shows with modern fandom because you'll attract weirdos like this.
