By request, I'm testing out a portable/countertop dishwasher to see how well it works. I chose this model by Novete with an internal tank and sink hookups for the most flexibility. This model costs about $350.

This is actually faster than washing my own dishes because it takes me about 3 hours to mentally prepare myself to take on the task. I also live in an apartment with a small kitchen so it makes sense to invest on one of these for me.

I live in a small apt too and I just LOVE mine bc my dirty dishes have a place to go into and its so much easier to keep my countertop clean. I dont spend my Saturday mornings deep cleaning my kitchen anymore and its so nice to just push a button instead of rolling my sleeves up and organize the dishes for the next 15 mins while I finally wash them.

Really good review! You're right, that someone could easily hand-wash their dishes in about 15 minutes or so -- that's my situation. But I hate, hate, hate, loathe, despise, cannot stand washing dishes. Even if it's just 15 minutes a day. Plus, I can't help but think that I'm wasting water by hand-washing dishes -- we're in a drought here in CA, so water conservation is extremely important. That makes a countertop dishwasher is an excellent choice! Loved the "unfair" test -- I was really impressed with this tiny dishwasher's performance. Thank you!

You can avoid water spillage (when filling the tank) by using a funnel. I had on hand a funnel that I bought off Amazon some time back. Works perfectly! Also - I've only use the ECO cycle and it works great. Still uses all 3 carafes of water, but not as much power since it runs in half the time (30 min). I've had to wash my dishes by hand for over 3 years, and I am in the market for a countertop dishwasher. I really appreciated this thorough review! Whether I get this model or not, you've helped me think through a lot of the aspects I'll need to consider! Your plates are massive compared to mine (thin correlle dishes) and it's just me in the apartment so I don't have many dishes to begin with. But dishes always seems to be the chore I hate the most and I think this would really improve my mental health to have a clean sink easily. I could set this to run when I go to bed with just that day's dishes and have no problem with a smaller amount of dish space. I just don't want to put it through the washer and then still have to wash it by hand if it came out not fully clean. I also really appreciate the high temperature because it can sanitize my dishes better than I can by hand. Thanks for this thorough review! The "unfair test" was particularly helpful!

I like this idea mainly because the water gets hotter than I could put my hands in. Since I’m a single person, I don’t need a full sized dishwasher. And I never ran mine through the dry cycle; just open the door and they dry just fine.

While it may take less time to wash dishes by hand, it normally uses a lot more water. Also, your water tank has to keep the water warm all the time, whereas the countertop version works more like an instantaneous water heater. You give the most honest and thorough reviews I've found. Thank you for helping me decide what countertop dishwasher I'll go with for my tiny apartment.

@@teshiburu that depends entirely on you. If you use dishwasher pods, you are trading cleaning power for "convenience". I say that in quotations because I really don't know how a pod is more convenient. Anyways, the 2 biggest factors of getting a good clean from your dishwasher is running your water until it's hot before using the machine to ensure a hot pre wash. The second is making sure you put soap on your pre wash chamber. The enzymes in your soap need time to work, that's why they need to be in the pre wash. When you use pods, you don't get the enzymes in the pre wash you need.

I've been debating getting one of these (this exact model actually!) since I live in a smallish place ( great landlord and yearly rent cheaper than property taxes). Seeing a side by side testing comparison with the "unfair" test gave me great info. A little heads up on the "mug " rack and small utensil holes. I had something similar to one of these when I lived in Japan I used the rack for rice paddles and rice bowls and the small utensil slots for chopsticks.

I bought an edgestar brand on amazon. It's basically about the size of the top rack of my installed dishwasher in my kitchen. But it's large enough to take 6 place settings including full sized 10 inch dinner plates. As long as you stick to a liquid or gel detergent these work very nicely. I take mine when I stay at extended stay hotels for more than two or three nights. Along with a toaster oven and an instant pot it's like having a full service travel kitchen anytime you need one. In fact I can save money on extended stays away from home because with those three appliances, I really only need a fridge in my hotel room, instead of paying extra for a "kitchenette".

Modern Grinders struggle to grind anything harder then cooked pasta, and lead to fine particle recirculation which can get stuck on dishes. Modern dishwasher grinders are prone to failure and don’t work very well to begin with, that’s why only lower end cheap dishwashers still use them. Kitchen aid makes a self cleaning filter, and Bosch filters typically only need cleaning monthly, and are very reliable.

Having a detergent pod fall in when the door closes is more or less the same as the powdered detergent falling in. Powder is cheaper, but less convenient. This unit seems ideal for a single person, and maybe also for empty nesters. It probably consumes a lot less energy and water than a standard washer, and allows for more frequent washing if the number of dishes in the cupboard are limited. Using a tank also limits potential for water damage from leaks. Did you try the fruit wash feature? That seemed interesting.

I think that shelf would be great for long handled kitchen utensils like wooden spoons or a pizza cutter. I used one years ago and I absolutely loved having it because my roommate never helped with the dishes.

When I lived in an apartment we had a countertop dishwasher for years. It's an awesome option to have if a full-size unit isn't an option. Mine had a hose that connected to the faucet so it just filled on its own. I loved it.

Wow perfect timing! I just bought this exact brand! Glad to see I made a good choice. My apartment doesn’t have a full sized dishwasher and I can’t really do dishes because it makes the eczema on my hands go crazy. Plus dishes are just cleaner when put through an actual wash and it uses less water. I’m super excited for it to arrive on Wednesday!

As a mom of 2 young kids. This has changed my life... we can’t put a dishwasher in our home we have tried it just isn’t gonna happen... so I got this exact one and it has changed my life so much!!! I can’t say enough good things about it. Also it has cut the water cost dramatically!

I can see purchasing one of these to use in my camp trailer. I loathe washing dishes when I am using my camper so an appliance like this would be perfect! Thank-you for the review, James.👍👍

I’m in an apartment, and this made me so excited. I have one large sink...so I can wash but it’s hard to rinse and dry without awkwardly getting water everywhere. I’m going to look into this, at least to dry. Thank you for this!

Thanks for the thorough review & comparison. We're buying one for our camper. My wife's only complaint about camping is having to hand-wash the dishes. Now we'll be able to load it up and walk to the pool..

I remember going to Sears with my parents many years ago and they had a dishwasher on display with a clear front so you could watch it working. Found it mesmerizing. Kinda reminds me of that.

I have used a Whirlpool bench dishwasher for 25 years and its been a trooper. Still works just as well as when I got it. Seeing this, I wish it had a window in front! :D

Fun fact: If you spend 15 minutes washing dishes each day. In a month, it equals 7.7 hours a month. A whole workday constantly washing dishes. So buying a dishwasher (small or big) pays off both in valueble time and money
