People new to fish keeping can get missold fish by shops that don't care. Bala Sharks are a good example. They are small when you get them but they grow pretty quick.

In 2016 I gave a lone piranha fish, probably, Pigocentrus piraya, to my grandson, and he'd put it in the tiny tank, despite what I'd said to him. And it has grown neary twice it's initial size since then.

Poor water quality and pheromones that fish give off definitely cause stunted growth which is more of a problem in a small aquarium but if you had a constant supply of good quality water flowing through and out of tank which would also stop the build up of pheromones then the fish would keep growing even in a small aquarium! 👍
