In Bali, I get a "bule bahasa" price for most things. Not as good as local price, but usually a decent 50% discount off tourist prices. All because I spent a month of my life learning how to speak Indonesian conversationally. I think it's worth it. Not just for the discounts, but the friendships you form.
@xyphercs80242 жыл бұрын
The price would be in a completely different world, if only you had negotiated more. In case you speak Thai, you would say that you’ve been living here for … years already and say your desired price. Some of them will understand and might probably given you a lot lower price. Fun fact: I’m fluent Thai and sometimes when I needed a tuktuk ride, they will reject instantly probably because they wanted to charged more cash on tourists, in my option.
Agree, that why is important for long term staying foreigner to learn to speak Thai. Those refuse usually leave Thailand eventually on negative feeling.

When I was a student, me and my friends rode tuk tuk from our school (kinda near Hua Lampong) to Thewes area, about 3-4 km, for 40 baht. That's around 15 years ago. I agree with Paddy, you can try tuk tuk for once in a lifetime. You can try to negotiate the price with them, all the Thais do. Think as you paying for theme park ride or something. If you just want a transport, I recommend the rail system or the boat. They charge the same price for both Thai and foreigners.

I think 3 kms. If you guys go by taxi meter (press the meter) around 60-70 baht. Tuk Tuk for Thai people 100 baht, for foreigners tuktuk biker will charge you 2 times more expensive around 200 baht. So, I recommended to use Application Line man or Bolt. It's better 😆

Stands to reason if you speak Thai you should pay less as they assume you are a long term resident / working expat as opposed to a 2 week tourist on holiday with generally less concern for prices.

Your mate sucks at negotiating, which is part of the issue. I have found if you can have fun with them and negotiate with confidence in a fun way, it often works. When he asks for a lower price he does it in a way that has zero chance of working, zero energy or confidence, and asks them to negotiate against themselves rather than making a counter offer. Its definitely something you get better at over time though

Why do you want to ride a tuk-tuk? You're gonna pay a lot more than BTS, MRT and bus but if you just want to have a fun experience then go for it if get ripped off is not your concern. Don't expect an honest business from taxi and tuk-tuk in Bangkok but some of them are ok. Regardless of Paddy speaks Thai, Paddy will pay farang/tourist price because of his look.
@jayiwa2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. And not only that, Tuk Tuk is basically for tourists (aka. tourist trap). Any tourist traps in any heavily touristy towns in the world will always rip off the tourists. This experiment is designed to fail from the start.
"฿200" That's where they always start. You didn't push hard enough. Your last ride should have been ฿120. :) It is true though that speaking (even a bit of) Thai goes a long way.

Wonder if they're pre-empting not being tipped with the prices for farang? My first trip to Thailand I never tipped because that's just not what one would do to a taxi driver at home, but on subsequent trips I'd happily top up basically the difference in price seen in the videos here. Well, maybe not 200 baht for a kilometre, but yeah...

Mate, you might want to be careful what sentiment you are giving in this kind of video. Far too many videos recently keep focussing on the dual pricing system. First of all, it exists for a reason. Secondly, the cost of living in Thailand has skyrocketed in the past few years. Even for me, a Thai from London and I come to Thailand every 2-3 years, I'm still surprised by the prices these days in 2022. In contrary, I'm also often stunned to overhear Farangs trying to haggle the price down to a ridiculous amount, just because they were too anxious about the dual pricing. After all, it's still good to learn Thai to improve your travel experience in Thailand, but please stop promoting this sentiment and fear of dual pricing.
@Eyes_Unclouded2 жыл бұрын
Yes, thank you for saying this❤️
@jayiwa2 жыл бұрын
Most importantly, this is an experiment on a tourist trap, Tuk Tuk. The ordinary Thais don't use Tuk Tuk these days, except the wholesale merchants who transport large quantity of goods from somewhere to the fresh market. And of course those merchants might get a deal with the driver because they are regular passengers. Tourist traps exist everywhere, even in your beloved Australia or in my now-hometown London. If you've been to Covent Garden in recent years you would see the rickshaw services or even a Tuk Tuk in London. Ask the price, and you'll be surprised by how much they're charging. But you wouldn't be aware of dual pricing because the ordinary Brits/Londoners don't use them. That's what Thais say "same same but different".
@ellefsensbarmyarmy84912 жыл бұрын
The dual pricing is there for a reason, yes. The reason is to rip off tourist and other foreigners. To rip off people you are dependent on is a bad idea, and Thailand will be better off once they understand that.
@jayiwa2 жыл бұрын
@Ellefsens Barmy Army well, in this world you pay the price for being tourist anywhere you go. The tourists to your home country probably have a similar experience of getting ripped off, but you're just not aware of it because you never live in your town as a tourist. Try experiment this in normal way of life, like getting on the public transport, buying food in the market. I don't think you'll see dual pricing in those places. And if you'll talk about entry fees to some tourist sights, the obvious difference in those prices for foreigners and Thais is the tax. Most foreigners to Thailand don't even pay the visa fee to enter., so they are virtually not contributing enough to the tourism industry, especially if they are pinching every penny whilst in the country. In contrary, Thais likely pay extortionate visa fee to enter your country even just for a few days.
@ellefsensbarmyarmy84912 жыл бұрын
@@jayiwa No. I have never experienced dual pricing anywhere in the west. In most places that would be considered discrimination and illegal. Unlike my country, Thailand biggest industrial is tourism. Thai authorities goal is that tourism will account for 30% of GDP in 2030. No other country is close to that. So, the dual pricing is not just a problem for the foreigner. You see, people like to be treated fair, and when they don’t, they will simply take their business elsewhere.

As a tourist, try not to take Tuk Tuk or roadside Taxi. They tend to mark up for tourists. Just take grab and it's fixed price.

Bolt is cheaper but the wait can be very long sometimes. Road side taxis are cheapest but maybe it's 30% they are fair and use meter. So it might not be worth the effort. And I feel obliged to tip huge to the honest drivers anyways, so ...
