Got here late, but I love your eclipse take! I'm a Catholic science teacher, and just started using a new textbook series with a chapter on the many "coincidences" that point to a higher intelligence. Just like this podcast, both the science and the philosophy are sound. I also love Jen's continued streak of having the only sane takes on the internet. I've seen Catholic women make a good point related to your "men being expendable" take: while in the pregnancy/young children phase of life, mom does have a larger role by default. Dad can't carry or breastfeed the kids. Referring to the man as the head of the household reminds them that they are responsible for both mom and baby during that vulnerable time, and have a vital role in the family. There seems to be an alarming trend with some milennial/gen Z men just checking out of their lives, because if women can do everything, they feel useless and act that way as a result.

Jen, my ice-bath debt accumulates each passing day and here I stand in a roiling tide of MegaBlocks, mismatched unicorn pajamas, and library books so overdue they might be used to bring felony racketeering charges against my family. Yet I’m so here for ecliptic prophecy and a gender role smackdown on modern sensibilities. The idea that all my efforts might be just to subtly nudge someone towards success after my 80 years of toil is pretty discouraging, but then again faith is the weakest aspect of my faith. How does one press on towards an unknown goal, maybe never knowing of the positive impact that was intended by God?

I really appreciate your take on gender roles with evolutionarily history! So much to think about here… I am also a Catholic woman with a strong personality, new mom, and an artist going through the journey with balancing starting up a creative side hustle and respecting gender roles.. I know the faith community tends to just expect you to embrace it out of principle, but it’s really helpful to keep all the evolutionary nuances in mind!! Thank you!

Like so many people who try to justify hierarchy in marriage, Jen is giving lip service to “male headship” while in reality practicing the mutual respect and joint decision making that it actually takes to avoid divorce. A good husband puts his wife and her needs first. A good wife puts her husband and his needs first. No one is the boss, because you both give way to the other, and then any disagreements you work out together. Giving lip service to harmful dynamics while practicing otherwise yourself is at best self-deceit, and at worst hypocritical and perpetuating abuse by normalizing male dominance for abusers who desire controlling relationships. Remember, if one person has a trump card in marriage, their voice is the only one that actually matters. 51% in a 2 person partnership is the same as 100%.
