Most people these days live with their parents due to financial reasons, not necessarily because they want to, but they have to.
@EasyGreekVideos
@EasyGreekVideos 2 жыл бұрын
In the past, many young people would still choose to live with their parents despite having a job and being able to afford a place of their own. 30-years-old and even 40-year-olds living with their parents has been a common trope and occurrence for a long time. Many people, even after moving out, still accept tupperware-fulls of food from their mums, even today. It's the culture - like one interviewee mentioned, in this part of the world, people keep their family close.

@@EasyGreekVideos I'm from India, and in some ways, the family culture is quite similar. With this Modern age, people want to be independent and live according to themselves. In the past, having joint families and spending time with the family was a big part of their everyday lives. In this context... I myself live away from my family, but I still get Tupperware from my mum. 😅

@@EasyGreekVideos I think your answer is biased or just aimed at proving something that is completely wrong. Anyone trying to prove that the economy and unemployment in Greece have not played a catalytic role in the fact that young adults are unable to leave their parents' place, they are either naive or liars. Having seen several videos of your channel, I have to say that it seems that the choice of people you make in your videos is very selective and not open. Also the questions you ask are very targeted and in no way appropriate for decent research. Even if the Greek past results in people choosing to stay with their parents, you have to think about the current situation which is super unhealthy and it does not help young adults to find their paths. As a 26-year-old Greek woman who left her parents' home 9 months ago, and having friends of the same age, I have to tell you that our salaries have never been good and the rents are absurdly high. Also, at the beginning of our studies, I and many other people I know, had the "misfortune" not to have experience and so we could not find a job even in restaurants, cafes, etc. And people keep telling us we are lazy... Yes, if unemployment or working more than 12 hours overtime is laziness, then that's ok by me. Greece is dealing with many many issues and yes, most of them are the result of having a toxic culture, but the current financial situation and the non-desire of helping young people to grow, doesn't do any good. On the contrary, it makes things worse. Another point that I would like to make is that my parents weren't living with my grandparents as a married couple, which means that this kind of past you are referring to, seems to be just... past. And I think most of the Greek married couples of this generation don't live with their own parents, too.

In the US it is becoming more and more common for Americans to live with their parents past the age of 30 because of how expensive things have become. It would not surprise me to see people from other countries having to deal with the same financial struggles.

Greek American here. There was definitely a lot of push here in the US growing up to leave home at 18, which clashed with the cultural expectation I grew up with that kids generally live longer with their parents and multi-generational households weren't considered strange. I did leave at 18 since my university was several hours from my parents' house, but this was right after the Great Recession and now I know plenty of people like you said you had to stay home because of finances.

Also here in Italy its the same, young people leave around 30 or even later...the main reason is economical obviously, but its also because today we want less responsabilities, and to live alone does it mean to buy food, to cook, to clean house, to wash clothes, to pay taxes... and some some other "not funny" things that today do our Mom. So are two reasons inside

Ευχαριστώ πολύ για αυτό το επεισόδιο ! When I was younger, I could not wait to leave home (and did) ... but now as I get older, the more I am thinking about returning home if only to spend more time around my aging parents and not just leave them to be alone. It is a strange thing - On one hand, I think I feel the social pressure or expectation (... not sure ?) to be independent and live away from home, but on the other hand, they would be so happy for me to return. 🥰

Sometimes we also bring our old parents together. Well, most of the time is just one of the old parents, apparently because always one of them dies faster. I believe this is a very Medditarenean culture. Greece, Italy, and Spain share some similar cultures when it comes to family and I believe it has to do with religion too. To respect your elder people, take care of your parents,

Even if you want to leave , you can't. Most jobs for people 20-30 years old pay around 800 euros per month. A house to rent in Athens costs from 400€ to 600€. So all your money go to the rent, and even if you live with someone else, that also has a job, the money are not enough to live properly.

@@EasyGreekVideos I understand - let me say - I really enjoy all of your segments - I learn something from each of them. Why I even mentioned this about the incorporation of English words into native Greek language is the deflation of the Greek language. When I go to Greece and see most Retail & Restaurants with primary logos in English it saddens me. WHY??? Keep the Greek first and in lower font size translate into English. Even the word "SALES" on storefronts instead of ekptoseis is an affront on the Greek culture which is precious!

Yup. It happens a lot, somehow the parents feel insecure, especially if they have only one child. Maybe they would be ok if you moved alone to another apartment in the same city or at the very least to another city in the country, but if you tell them "Mom, Dad, I found a job in the UK, I am leaving" they will have 5 heart attacks and 6 strokes at the same time. cause somehow they think if you leave you will never return back. which could possible, so they start thinking," What if I get sick? What if I die? Will they come to see me?" :O Also the majority of parents here pumper their kids, like my parents for example will be like: "It's ok if work doesn't go well now, here take 300 euros extra xD" So they act like they will be forever here protecting and securing for which is not the case. Somehow I feel that we are trapped in a very co-dependent toxic relationship with our parents and of course if you marry someone obviously you marry the whole family and he marries yours :)
