Misassumption, a switch case is not an if-else statement. It actually works with a lookup table. Compare your compiled code of an if-else to one of a switch-statement and you'll see that the switch statement includes a range check (for the highest case) and a lookup to see where to jump for each case.

I live in the silicon valley and it feels like unless you were a CS major or went to a major Bootcamp and got a referral, it's getting harder and harder to land a full-time software engineering role. I graduated from college but wasn't a CS major, the job market is rough for people in this situation. They always say the available jobs are increasing, but they're looking for really "highly qualified", meaning CS Majors with great work experience. Don't have either, so honestly considering relocating at this point.

At medium size startup are more than likely to hire someone with software skills regardless. If startups aren't your thing then why do freelancing? There are plenty of jobs and people online willing to hire people and pay them to do software stuff like python, Java, C++, etc. You can do this to help keep an income flowing through until you hear a call back while sitting in your pajamas.
@cck35275 жыл бұрын
I don't see anything wrong with that per se. If you wanted to get a real job in hard engineering (meche, ee, cheme etc), most companies won't take you seriously unless you have at least a bachelor's degree in engineering. You sure won't convince them that you have sufficient engineering mathematics knowledge by doing some bootcamps and/or online classes because, in most cases, the academic rigor at a university level is just far far superior to these sources. Both software engineering and "hard" engineering requires a lot of academic rigor to get the foundations down and sure some smart people can figure it out, but, for most average Joe and Jane, few months of bootcamp is hardly a replacement for university education.

Dude I'll let her answer but what she mentioned about it being 'soul-less' is SO true. Sure you can get paid a decent salary at entry level... but it will get to you if you only do it for the $. (👋🏾 15 year SWE here)
@mr.b895 жыл бұрын
@@iamjasonthompson Thanks for this, but what exactly made it so empty? Is the work pigeonholing and draining?
@iamjasonthompson5 жыл бұрын
Mr. B the pigeonholing is a huge part. The problem is... you’re part of a big machine ..so you end up focusing on small parts of a big picture. Now ... this can vary from company to company but procedures are everywhere. Google Agile Method for software lifecycles. You’ll see what I mean. It’s more process than building. It’s needed but just. . . soul-less. You’ll find yourself making small iterations to an existing product week in and week out. It gets hard to see the passion or the reason you’re coding.. you’re just fulfilling requirements that you hope don’t get torn apart by QA. That said ... this could just be my experience. It would be silly for me to think that every SWE job is like this... just know that it is possible to be in such an environment. I still like it but I can’t settle for just any old team. It’s better if your building something you’re interested in.. "not just I make code and stuff because the paychecks are nice."
@hellomayuko5 жыл бұрын
I def resonate with a lot of this that Jason said 👆 I think that the financial freedom that one can achieve via CS & SWE at such speed is unparalleled from other fields. And financial freedom at least in the US definitely grants you lots of opportunities (not gonna sugar coat that). Some people are totally okay and are fine working at a job that gives them financial stability for a long time so that they can still do what they love on the side. Personally, working purely for financial stability isn’t completely fulfilling nor is it sustainable for me to do over a long period of time. That said, I’m able to explore my creative side on KZbin because of the financial independence I’ve gained from being a SWE. If I were in your shoes (not knowing anything else about who you are or what your circumstances are), I would choose the path that I wouldn’t regret taking (or regret less than the other option): whatever that means to you. And in the end, whatever choice you make will be the right one because you’re going to learn so much about yourself, and that’s priceless.

I really dont understand how people in US get a great jobs in tech industry just finishing a boot camp course. In Brazil, some of us porsuing computer science school for 4 years, during college some of us work and research simultaneously. After graduating, some of us start the Master in Computer Science and continue work simultaneously. After finishing the master course and defend the dissertation, most of the jobs oportunities dont pay very well. In Brazil, after years studying algorihms e data structures, computer architecture, design and development of systems, operation systems, computer networks, and more ... Life continue very hard after graduation. Sylicon Valley is a buble.

You don't need anything too fancy. Depending on what field you work in, different specs are needed. I'd assume someone working in web development wouldn't need as much storage, graphics processing speed, or ram as someone in rendering or game/computer graphics development.
