Can I just say that as a kid with straight parents who love me a lot, the whole stuff about the "role of the mother" is absolute hogwash? My dad is so much more nurturing than my mom. He played with us as kids, read to us, cooked for us and did a lot of the "mom stuff" but he was never my mom, he was and is my dad. He's also masculine, he's just the nurturing type. And for her part, my mom was always loving but she is much better with older kids she can relate to on a conversation level and just isn't the most tactile. She still is feminine and my mom. Like, can we stop pretending fathers can't be nurturing? They can. Stop lying to yourselves. Men are perfectly capable of being men and bonding with their children just as much as mothers.

@MB-yl9hm
@MB-yl9hm Жыл бұрын
I think that's mostly based on the fact that women literally nurture their children by virtue of being mothers. My children literally lived inside of me for 9 months, and then I continued to feed them with my body for months afterwards. That is the most nurturing thing you can do. Also I don't believe the consensus is that men can't be nurturing, that's the whole point of being a parent after all, but women on average tend to be more sensitive, agreeable, conscientious, etc., which translates to being more stereotypically nurturing ON AVERAGE compared to men who, on average, are more assertive, tolerant to risk, discerning, etc., which does not translate as stereotypically nurturing. There's always exceptions to the rule, but if you were to pick out a random mother and father out of the entire world's population, you could bet money that the former will exhibit typically feminine/maternal traits and the latter will exhibit typically masculine/paternal traits. This is why it's rarely helpful to look at individual experiences through the lens of group truths. Like BMI, on a population level it's an accurate and useful measure of health, but not so much for the individual.

I respect everyone's views, however as an adoptee, I get very frustrated when people say same-sex households will cause a reproduction problem. Like, there are so many kids who need homes, and many queer partners would be more willing to adopt than straight partners. People are so selfish when it comes to that. The other issue is, many queer folk are not allowed to adopt. THAT to me is more of an issue.

exactlyy, and honestly when he was first talking about the example he gave for why he would spank his daughter and how he tells her what not to do first, then if she does it anyway he spanks her and THEN talks about it, I was like that... doesn't make sense. First of all children need repetition and redirection. And they have no impulse control. So instead of spanking and then talking about it, maybe talk to her about why it's unsafe and then redirect her to something she CAN climb so she isn't climbing the thing that's not safe for her to. Cause if you tell her once then walk away and she does it again, spanking is not the fix all. If anything you're instilling fear, not understanding.

I was heated when Aldo said, “We shouldn’t set up a system in which children are intentionally put in homes that are fatherless or motherless”. Whether it be a same-sex couple, heterosexual couple, or single parent wanting to adopt a child; they’re all providing a child with a home. They’re giving that child something that’s, hopefully, better than what they were previously enduring. I guess my whole point is as long as the children are being taken care of and loved in a safe environment, then that’s what truly matters. My mom was a single parent and I believe she did a great job as a parent.

@@derekwitthar In the beginning she derailed the topic and made it about herself no one was talking about sex queer transgender homosexual but she turned the conversation into that in order to support her own belief. Which is something a lot of people from that community do they need other people to affirm them or to confirm that their beliefs are OK. Now I will say that for the remainder of the conversation she did listen to other people's views she was very concise in the way that she spoke she did become more respectful as the conversations carried on I don't want to take that from her and I wouldn't say don't bring her back. She did give a lot of valid points and there were things that she did say that I agreed with. I just don't like when people Change the narrative of the conversation and get away from the original topic that was presented. It's just like the other girl with 2 dads she didn't want to accept the fact that the bond between a mother and a daughter is irreplaceable. To the point where she got emotional because she wasn't being affirmed in the fact that she was OK with having 2 dads. That people telling her that her life is messed up makes her cry like you shouldn't care what other people think if you love both your dads then you should be fine with both of your dads. I get that some things are a sensitive topic For some people however being emotionally in control is important when you're trying to discuss topics. Like raw for instance she was getting emotional at certain points within the debate however she eventually gained control over herself and was able to articulate herself very well. So I'll definitely delete my comment that I posted earlier because I realized I was wrong for saying that we shouldn't bring her back. Just like if someone says I don't want to tell my children that it's OK to be different than who you are you shouldn't be getting upset and getting loud with them for their views and beliefs no one yelled or screamed at them for being queer or transgender or having 2 dads but they felt that they need to get loud and yell at the other people for having views. At the end of the day I did feel that everybody ended on a very positive note and everybody for the most part was respectful but I think that if you look at college debates they give you a perfect example of what a true debate looks like. No one has to call someone crazy or call them names in order to prove their point they simply just state facts you don't have to talk over someone that's why I like college debates because each side gets their time to speak.

@@novaaadivine there isn't a difference. Only until very recently in the US, was it no longer the social norm for our husbands to discipline us for our poor behavior. That was considered fully okay, acceptable, and necessary, just like spanking is seen. Physical abuse, inflicting fear, life or death, biting, smacking, ripping a 1 year olds hair out for pulling your hair, it's all BEYOND unnecessary. As a mother of three, it's so sad that people just accept abuse and excuse it. I guarantee a lot of your interpersonal relationships, your mental health, your communication, is all effected by the abuse you experienced. The effects on the brain have been proven, time and time again, all over the world, repetitive results, that it is detrimental to mental development.
