Spent a year in korea, learning the language or showing you're willing to learn is pretty important because from my experience the parents dont speak english or atleast not very good english, but you'll learn their respect and approval if you show you're learning. Also cultural manners, not sure what it's really called but like at dinner nobody touches their food or drinks until the oldest does first.

I think it’s difficult to judge about dating „foreigners“ in general. Because every nation that’s foreign to Korea has a culture of its own. My boyfriend and I are from Europe and Asia and have been together for 7 years. The reason it works is that we are interested and feel comfortable in each others cultures and therefore created our own cultural mix that we live in together. But there indeed are things that need to be discussed when it comes down to talking about a future family and how to handle that. You need to be open-minded for it to work out

We have a great relationship but it was definitely hard for her learning English (despite majoring in it in Korea), and to adapt on many levels especially work. When we were young and met it didn’t matter but it was a huge sacrifice for her that I didn’t recognize until later. When we grew up, we're taught "don't judge a book by its cover" as an adult, nurse practitioner with extensive knowledge of biology, I can personally tell you the "personality matters" is bullshit. Personality doesn't matter or comes 2nd after looks. Across animals, looks is the FIRST stage of elimination because it directly shows your genes and how they can be spread, it showcases if you're healthy and have adaptive traits or not. I'm not a psychologist, but I read sufficient physio/psych peer reviews to understand the physiological workings of the mind. Selection of race of another partner revolves around reproduction. Denying it is like saying looks don't matter, only personality does, which is false; looks is the first step of elimination.

From what I heard, if you cannot speak fluent Korean, they treat Korean Americans kind of like Japanese/Chinese. Look similar but not really "one of us". I hear often that expat Koreans get discriminated because they cannot speak good Korean, and that it's harder to make friends in Korea. So dating game should be somewhat similar.

I'm married to an Asian woman, and the truth is there are a lot of pitfalls. Two most important issues would be speaking each other's language and understanding each other's culture. I lived in her country for a year and she lived with me in the USA before we married to insure we understood each other and knew where we had to compromise. This also helped us decide where to live and how we would live once we were married. It made our first few years of marriage much easier and manageable, so now our lives are enriched from the experience and we still go every year to her country to visit friends and family. it also helps that both our families are very accepting of the relationship.

I'm a polyglot, I'm currently learning Korean. As a polyglot I speak a few different languages, my field of business/education is something that could make Korea a great job market for me. I have thought about moving there since I was a kid (connection to it from my grandfather and father), I have of course thought about relationships because of all of that, honestly my big worry if I were to bite the bullet and move there and work there would be, once I get into a relationship how I'd be treated. I know in a few other countries (Taiwan, China, Thailand etc.) foreign men moving there and getting into relationships can be viewed lowly by others. I would also be worried about the "riding the white horse" type stuff (although I believe that usually refers to caucasian women not men) as well as being in a relationship because they want to learn English mainly as the reason instead of that just being an added bonus. I'd rather they want to be in a relationship because they like me not because of the bonuses of learning English. Well people have to look at this from a proper context. Why would a Korean want to date a foreigner in the first place? There probably are some preconceived stereotypes that Koreans may have of foreigners. Likewise foreigners may have of Koreans as well. How likely you are to date might very well depend. How much of that stereotype your willing to fulfill or not. But that doesn't mean you can't find a person willing to think outside the box. It just requires a bit more effort on your part. Personally I feel the most important thing to any international relationship. Is to have an open mind and not be critical of the other person. You after all are trying to learn about them. As much as they're trying to learn about you. Well that's just my two cents not that it's worth anything.

The culture difference is indeed hard to overcome if the foreigner you date has a different cultire than yours. When I immigrated in America when I was 21, i experienced this first hand that most of the women in my age bracket did not understand how Asian culture operates. Because of that. I end up marrying a girl in my home country because most western women I met did not have the same values I had.

I think age and experience and the place you grew up forms your thoughts. I am Turkish but grew up in the Netherlands. When i was a teenager i was like, i would only date and marry a Turkish man. In my 20s i was like, i can date a Dutch man but i will marry with a Turkish man. Being western and having married a Chinese person I can indeed say you have to work hard on the differing cultural perspectives,. Westerners usually don't give a crap about what others think, I found most Chinese choose what they do according to what others (Chinese) might think....then again my wife can use me as an excuse to do what she wants, blame me for it, which is what I tell her to do. They can put no cultural pressure on me, as they can the wife.... and unlike them, I am quite willing to be confrontational which is something they all wish to avoid, which means, they refrain from interfering in our life. Works well for both of us.

There are differences, culturally, yes. But, as it is the same with cultures of bordering nations- your respect for where the other person comes from and their worldview bridges the gap somewhat. While we are all human, we convey and interpret physical emotional cues differently, so language becomes the most important barrier. Even still, being able to communicate (not just talk) is even difficult for people of the same culture. The next barrier is finding commonalities in thinking and belief systems. An important ingredient is flexibility and open-mindedness, while a barrier would be the inability to accept concepts different from your own. If you truly know what respect is, and have the self-understanding to see yourself how others see you- you can do well (in anything). Lastly, you will need thick enough skin to withstand judgement (from various sources), but if you are capable- you can smooth out those differences with your charm and intelligence.
