Problems start with the trailer being too shallow or too deep. As a boat owner you've got to find that perfect depth so when loading your boat slides about 85% on the trailer then crank it up the rest of the way. Not an expert by any means but that's how I do it and it works. Hit the bunks, juice it a little till it slides up and stops, crank it in the rest of the way.
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
Yup! You want just enough boat on the trailer to keep it from floating away. Anything more is extra witching work, and less makes it hard to keep the boat centered on the trailer. These people are obviously too ignorant to understand this.
@danielmartens1563 жыл бұрын
You almost never see anyone using the crank. That's what it's for right! 😁🚤👍🌿
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
@@danielmartens156 to an extent, yes. You have two main types of idiots on the ramp. One type goes full sned and drives the boat damn near into the bed of the truck, and the other spends half the day cranking on the winch, because they are too stupid to drop the trailer in a little deeper. Personally, I prefer the crank yankers, as they are normally much safer to be in the same zip code as! On the other hand, the full send idiots are much more fun to watch at the ramp!!!!
@tomdrummy49843 жыл бұрын
Bump in and out of gear…….don’t steer it to spot…….pivot it. Turn wheel while in neutral and then bump into gear to pivot where you want to go. If you use reverse instead of forward, it’s a much smoother pivot because pitch of propellor moves less water when in reverse.
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
It is actually the concave blade that causes less water to be moved in reverse, but same thing I guess. You are absolutely correct in steering though! Use neutral for large steering adjustments, especially when going from reverse to forward or vice versa.

thing about Carolina Skiffs is they sit on top of the water. That boat has a 6inch draft so currents and waves can be a major pain. I actually have the exact same boat so I feel for them
@2009dudeman3 жыл бұрын
That's no joke, my skiff has an 8in draft and on windy days I'll end up flying into the dock (no wake it's just faster than almost anyone else) just to barely be crawling by the time I reach the dock. It's a completely different feel from deeper draft boats. The bonus though is turning on a dime is much easier. You can back out of the ramp real slick with some practice. Back up slowly, cut it hard one direction then kill power and wait as the boat pivots around and just idle forward once you turn about 100 degrees around and it will finish the turn inside a width about the length of the boat.
@seanmartin23823 жыл бұрын

Except rollers can mess up a fiberglass boat. You're better off buying slides and costing them in teflon spray, though that can be dangerous with how fast they slide off it

I have a boat trailer with rollers. Not once have the rollers helped me approach the trailer straight. This guy was having hard time getting to the trailer.
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
Roller trailers will NOT mess up fiberglass!!!! Roller trailers have their own problems though. Nothing educated people or ones with common sense can overcome, but just about every person I have met with a roller trailer has dropped their boat on the ramp from their own stupidity! Also, roller trailers are expensive, require much more maintenance, and are really for the more advanced boater. Roller trailers don't do shit for people too stupid to drive their boat or put their trailer deep enough in the water!!!
@BlackHawkBallistic3 жыл бұрын
@@charlieodom9107 I've read stories of people getting depressions on fiberglass, and even aluminum, boats from roller trailers. Maybe they just had a shitty trailer but still you'd need a really messed up bunk trailer to do that. What most people in this video really need are guide bunks on the sides of their trailer, it makes it so much easier its kind of insane people who have boats that could use them don't. People also need guide poles, that would help in so many of these crooked boat/trailer scenarios.
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
@@BlackHawkBallistic idiot poles are a clear indicator of someone who knows nothing about loading a boat, so you are right!!! The issue with roller trailers is people don't set them up properly for their boat. A properly setup roller trailer is much safer and easier on a boat's hull. In fact, take a look at any 10 year old boat with bunks. The gelcoat is nearly gone on the strips where the boat sits. There are far more people with damage from bunk trailers than there are from roller trailers. I'm talking percentage of owned, not total count, as there are far fewer roller trailers in the US.

You are correct. He needed some throttle in reverse to swing the bow, to fight the current. He also needs to learn to use neutral for steering movements. You can't go from one direction to another AND turn the wheel or you'll end up just like him. I see this way too often. People have full lock one way in reverse, then immediately go to forward while trying to turn, and they end up in the same spot they were in before reverse.
