that's the thing about uplifting, it's hard to say where the endpoint is. Even if we are a wolfling race, there's always dome wiggle room for someone to interfere and claim us, or enough of us that it needn't matter (until the rest catch up, if that's even posisble)

I think this is a Flowers for Algernon situation. At some point in the past, the Imperials developed a procedure that massively increased their intelligence. Unfortunately, this procedure would eventually backfire, causing the person who received it to massively regress in intelligence. And by the time they realized this, the vast majority of their people had already undergone the procedure.

The second story is fantastic, I well and truly, laughed my ass off. If memory serves me correctly, there was a Star Trek episode with a similsar theme to "Is It Plugged In?" That had ridiculously advanced aliens that were complete and utter morons because their technology had learned to run their society. The Alien A.I. wasn't malicious in any way just trying to protect its payload of lovable idiots from themselves.

Also among his quotes, "it's not the stupid idiots that get you. It's how smart idiots can be.", "I think we should remove all the safety guards for a year or so, and just let natural selection do its best work.", and other gems of that nature. He was my programming professor, but I learned far more about human idiocy in that class than I will ever learn about programming.

The second story reminds me of a species from some video game (I think it was Star Control Origins) that was short lived, fast reproducing, and died in job lots every time they tried to do anything, Every time you visited them, they would tell you about some new feat accomplished and casually rattle off how many of their people died to get it done. On the surface, they're pretty comical. But then you talk to an elder alien that observing them, and it tells you that for all their comicalness, species like that evolve and advanced technologically FAST. What took us centuries to do takes them mere decades. IOW, the reason the Imperial Citizens seem so stupid despite being able to build such advanced technology strikes me as something similar happening. They do insane shit that no one else does, but that pays off just often enough to take the leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else technologically, a trait that in some other HFY stories is something that belongs to humanity. As for the Imperial Citizens being dumb as rocks about technology... well how many idiots do you know who don't know how to work some basic piece of home technology?
@conniewilkinson9347 Жыл бұрын
That's because those 'idiots' as you call them (well, Most of them anyway) don't know how to work it because they've never used it before or been told/shown how to use it. Usually it comes in a box with with 'clear, concise directions of assembly/usage that no one but the author of said directions can understand. The real problem comes after they do learn how to use it and use it frequently. That's when their brain cells start dying due to lack of use. Having said that, to get serious for a moment, there are some studies done recently that shows as the level of technology and it's use goes up, the intelligence of humans is going down.

But there was no guarantee of that. This was a last stand as far as he knew, no backup coming, no hope save for one final gambit. The reinforcements just made the failed MAD charge worth the sacrifice.
@silvadelshaladin3 жыл бұрын
@@Talon1124 He actually fouled up. Without the reinforcements he would not have taken the fleet out. So what he did made no difference in that case other than a few dead xenos. Yes he tried and failed to do the suicide attack, but since he knew nothing else would work, that should have been what was done while the ship was whole if that was his intention(PLUS he could have done the life pods thing so some of his crew would survive). It would have had better odds at that point. Other things he could have done was try to lead the fleet away giving more time in case reinforcements came (which wasn't all that unlikely). Block first salvo, man the lifeboats, suicide attack run would have been a better move. Technically the aliens were utterly foolish to even let that possibly happen. Just in case the lone ship was going to do something utterly foolish, or the planet have some defense that would be similar, the fleet should NOT have been in a compact cluster. Spreading out was called for.
