Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese- American writer, poet, and painter chiefly known for his poetic essays and philosophical short stories.
The featured poem, ‘Do Not Love Half Lovers’ is perhaps one of Gibran’s most treasured works, urging us to live lives that are true to ourselves without compromise.
We hope you enjoy our rendition of this wonderful poem.

Do not love half lovers Do not entertain half friends Do not indulge in works of the half talented Do not live half a life and do not die a half death If you choose silence, then be silent When you speak, do so until you are finished Do not silence yourself to say something And do not speak to be silent If you accept, then express it bluntly Do not mask it If you refuse then be clear about it for an ambiguous refusal is but a weak acceptance Do not accept half a solution Do not believe half truths Do not dream half a dream Do not fantasize about half hopes Half a drink will not quench your thirst Half a meal will not satiate your hunger Half the way will get you no where Half an idea will bear you no results Your other half is not the one you love It is you in another time yet in the same space It is you when you are not Half a life is a life you didn't live, A word you have not said A smile you postponed A love you have not had A friendship you did not know To reach and not arrive Work and not work Attend only to be absent What makes you a stranger to them closest to you and they strangers to you The half is a mere moment of inability but you are able for you are not half a being You are a whole that exists to live a life not half a life Gibran Khalil Gibran

It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry." In other words someone you love is your desire of who you want to be, he or she is the things you want or hate to be. Your object of affection is a mirror of who you want ( healthy ) or doesn’t want to be ( codependency). And your other half is not meant to be exactly who you are.

@muhammadzayn27 These lines suggest that the true companion or "other half" isn't necessarily someone else, but rather an evolved or different version of oneself in another phase of life or state of being. It's about self-evolution and growth in different phases, rather than seeking completion through someone else.

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve been a half lover in the past and I regret that so much that at times I don’t know if I can live with myself. I’ve recently been going through a period of awakening and realization of my past mistakes and this poem really hit close to home for me. Edit: I wanted to thank yall for all the positive attention, I've been doing better although it's still really hard a lot of the time. Progress isn't always a straight line and I've fallen off and then gotten back on track several times and I like to think that won't happen again. I feel alone and sad a lot of the time and it's even harder because I know I did this to myself with my narcissism and jealousy, but that's just something I have to deal with at this point. But I'm still young (only 21 atm) I doubt this is the person I'll be for the rest of my life. Thanks for all the encouragement and if anyone else is going through something I know it's hard but we gotta make the most of it.

Do not love half lovers. Do not entertain half friends Do not indulge in works of the half talented Do not live half a life and do not die a half death If you choose silence, then be silent When you speak, do so until you are finished Do not silence yourself to say something And do not speak to be silent If you accept, then express it bluntly Do not mask it If you refuse then be clear about it for an ambiguous refusal is but a weak acceptance Do not accept half a solution Do not believe half truths Do not dream half a dream Do not fantasize about half hopes Half a drink will not quench your thirst Half a meal will not satiate your hunger Half the way will get you no where Half an idea will bear you no results Your other half is not the one you love It is you in another time yet in the same space It is you when you are not Half a life is a life you didn't live, A word you have not said A smile you postponed A love you have not had A friendship you did not know To reach and not arrive Work and not work Attend only to be absent What makes you a stranger to them closest to you and they strangers to you The half is a mere moment of inability but you are able for you are not half a being You are a whole that exists to live a life not half a life Kahlil Gibran

These words are meant to sound very wise and there are grains of truth in there, but ultimately it is a very simplistic and even shallow world view. This guy is the poetry equivalent of instagram motivation coaches. Real life isn't like that, you have your main goals (e.g. family, wealth, success, art), and you often need to make compromises in order to reach them. To put it into his words, sometimes you have to eat half a meal, so you can afford the feast at the weekend.

@@reno8494 Im actually going through the same thing rn but Im hesitating cos if you cut them off when there isn't any obvious reason, wouldn't you gain an enemy out of them? I just started processing this from this incident that I didn't thought they'd do, I understand that from their perspective it might be not that serious but it was an impactful thing for me, it soon made me realize all the signs I've overlooked that this friendship doesn't just really work for me, I'd just like to know how did you handle this friendship breakup in general, the decision despite the possible outcome (tendency to miss and talk to them, the heart ache, and maybe them bullying you) and to handling the outcome (if there's anything grave happened), if you could. 👉👈

I know this poem, but listening to it today has made me feel so much better. I fear being too much for people. Too light hearted. Too serious. Too in love. Too indifferent. But these words have lifted me up a bit to not regret the things I’ve said in sincerity, even if it was revealing. Whatever rejection or half response I experienced had less to do with me being too much, and more to do with others with half lives not meeting me halfway.

He left Lebanon during Ottoman persecution of Lebanese Maronites and massive famine that killed his relatives and half the Christian Lebanese population. He was never persecuted by the church, in fact he was honored by it. His books were quickly translated and published in Lebanon for all to read. He was also a member of the Christian Lebanese society of writers that lived in USA at the time. One of the members was the Christian Lebanese Nationalist "Mikhael Neayme".

This is a great motivational poem for giving 100% to something you love. But it could also easily be interpreted as validation for fanatically minded people. There is also joy in balance and sampling many things, not putting all your energy into your job, hobby or your family. Arguably people who spend a lot of time just sitting quietly and reflecting rather than being 100% productive may also draw a lot of wisdom from that, and an ability to understand others on a deeper level than modern life sometimes allows us space to.

To unite Syria and Lebanon was not a radical idea back then. Especially not for us north lebanese. If Gibran was born today he would be given a lebanese citizenship. All families born before 48 are lebanese. Even Armenian or Circassian they under our law are lebanese. So yalla take cred from somone else. I'm sure he would find this debate of yours beyond stupid.
