We play with this stuff because we can. It's fun. It's a bit like the fast car or fast bike guys dropping a hot cam in, seeing what that does. Mostly they will give some increase in power at the top of the rev range, but for normal day to day use, they hurt everything else the engine does. It will generally be a nicer & easier to use bike with the engine left stock. It will start better, run nicer, get better fuel ecconomy and last longer, if you leave the way they made it at the factory. But we're boys, so trying to get your 160 rear wheel hp bike to 200 is a challange... When where and under what conditions you could ever use that extra power... But 200 has got to be better than 160 ~ Right?

@MohondhaY6 жыл бұрын
For me it's definitely worth it. I went with Zen+ over the 8700K *MAINLY* because a few FPS difference in games didn't bother me at all and for the super easy future upgrade paths RYZEN offers! Playing games, doing video edits/rendering, browsing ..it does it all quite easily. Also considering how well this CPU does against Intel's 8 core chips but for a much affordable price and again for the easy future upgrade path, this is definitely worth it. The best thing of all by going with Ryzen *for* *me* will be the ability to use Zen2 (in 2019) and Zen3(in 2020) CPUs (if I wanted to) *JUST* by replacing the CPU in my system! AM4 motherboards will support up to 2020. Won't need to buy another motherboard or install windows all over again, only replace the CPU. How awesome is that? If you're going with *RYZEN* go with the 2nd Gen *ZEN+* only.

It depends on what will you be using the built for? For gaming 1080p or 720p 8700k will perform %15-20 more fps for some games. Keep in mind that at 1440p ryzen shines. But if you are going to use your PC for work or other things 2700x will be a good choice. Thats my opinion of course. If you are playing at 1080p i5 8500 will be sufficient too.

Agree 100% Honestly just let PBO and XMR do their thing and maybe increase the thermal and power draw limits a bit to let it stretch its legs. You keep thermals down vs manual overclock and get nearly identical performance. I tinkered with OC for so long and couldn't get a good one stable (i apparently did not win the lottery with mine) and my temps were really high even with a quality aio (almost 90°C in R20 at some points. So I turned on PBO and XFR by using one of the PE settings in the bios and now it is sitting around 70°C in R20 with an almost identical score.

And anyways you get much better performance by tightening sub-timings than simply increasing frequency. I suggest to use tool called Ryzen DRAM Calculator. It's very handy for people who are not experts in memory tweaking. Just follow guide how to use it, software needs xmp latency values for starting point as each kit is different. I just replaced my trusty old i5 2500K with a R7 2700X. All I have done is set XMP for 3200mhz. The CPU sits on 4.2ghz on all cores with just 1.35v vcore. I see some cores go up to 4.35ghz. All this on the stock cooler. Block FSB overclocking might mess with the memory settings, so I avoid it. The extra few mhz may not be worth the hassle. I would like it to throttle down more when not under load though. It seems to prefer sitting at 4.15-4.2ghz and never drops below 3ghz. Electricity is expensive here in NZ. What has surprised me is that i listed my 2500K and motherboard with a 600w PSU on FB marketplace yesterday for $100. I did not think it would sell. People have been queuing up to get it. The other thing that surprised me is that the 2700X does not improve the 3DMark score when paired with the 1050ti i still have. Not one bit. That old Sandy Bridge is still strong enough to handle that GPU. Intel have pissed me off drip feeding us tiny improvements every generation and charging more for it and require us to get new motherboards to upgrade. It made me consider AMD. My digital audio workstation software loves that 8/16 core count and my wallet loves the price. I am waiting for Navi from AMD. if leaks are true it should be a good alternative to Nvidia

I absolutely love mine, got a Crosshair VII Wifi for free so i bought a 2700x even though i have a 1700x already haha. CB15 scores went from 155/1690 to 175/1800. With 50% core parking i can get 4 cores (on auto settings btw) to boost to around 4.3 4.35 and stay there without an issue, now i am watercooled so temperatures aren't an issue at all even with 27°C ambient. Only using 3200mhz ram but will be buying 3600 to see what i can muster. So if i oc manually ill maybe get 4.2 on all cores rather then 4.3 on 4 cores but considering most games only use 4 cores its not a problem. Origins ends up using more then 4 cores but even then this thing boosts on all cores to something like 4.1 already.

+Nicolas11x12 English You don't want to do manual overclocking with this thing, or in other words, do *not* use locked clock rates. What you *do* want however is a good X470 motherboard (the quality actually influence the automatic overclock) that *does* have percision boost override in the UEFI. And then overclocking using the precision boost override. That way it's actually possible to get 4,5 GHz single threaded frequency with 4,3 GHz all core frequency in some lighter workloads on some motherboards. Of course that depends on the silicon lottery... And yeah, your power efficiency kind of goes out the window when you do that (although slightly less then when you do a manual overclock with fixed clock speeds). As for memory, yeah, you *do* want faster memory, however not because you actually *want* to run it much faster then 3200 MHz, but because faster/higher quality memory often can run at better timings and sub-timings when running at 3,2 GHz. Basically if you already got a 3200 MHz memory kit it's not really worth it to buy anything faster, just tweak the timings and sub-timings as far as they will go. (And remember that some of them are influenced by eachother) There's some software calculators out there that will help you work out what numbers are the best for your system.

Even my Dark Rock Pro 3 was not able to cool it below this temps. Also my motherboard VRM was cooking, back side of MB where mosfets are situated was around 77 degrees, what was on mosfets I even don't want to know. So If you have liquid cooler & 12 phase VRM on your mobo maybe. Bot as for me it's crazy, if yo do not want to Pay100-120$ more on motherboard for 200-300MHz.
@Luredreier6 жыл бұрын
+Alex K I'm talking about precision boost override, not any form of overdrive. Overdrive is a form of overclocking where the motherboard is trying to OC the CPU with a set voltage and frequency target picked by the motherboard vendor and tends to use too much voltage as it needs to work even for people losing the scilicon lottery. Precission boost override OC is giving the reins to the CPU and simply telling it what voltages and temperatures you find acceptable before leaving it to figure itself how fast it can go. And yes, how far it will OC using precission boost and XFR will depend on your motherboard even if you override the temperature and power targets. I don't know exactly what features your motherboard have, I've noticed that some motherboards does *not* have precision boost override, only old school OC options like the "overdrive" you mentioned (not the same thing at all). I suggest just waiting then updating the UEFI in a few months to see if the feature has been added to yours. If not then yeah, I guess just leaving it at stock is best for you and your motherboard. Those temperatures do *not* look good.
@alexk.49186 жыл бұрын
I'm talking about precision boost override too.
@Luredreier6 жыл бұрын
+Alex K Depends on the motherboard. On some of them you can set a temperature target and the CPU won't OC any higher then what that target allows. So you won't get 85 degrees C like that. And you can set voltage targets too so you won't get over 1,4 volts like that. That said, its been implemented differently on different motherboards it seems, and not at all on some...

I'm curious for those whom owns the new Ryzen 2700X, what are you reported seeing? on max default voltage through HW monitoring. I mean yeah if you are talking about using GPU's from the time frame of the 2700x launch I would say OCing might not be worth it. But with newer GPUs like the 3070 and 3080 coming out, you will be CPU bound in games making it potentially worth the hassle of OCing to 4.2.

Hello guys, I have a huge problem, that I have no Idea how to resolve. Yesterday I bought new Mobo, CPU and Ram. A tuf b450m-pro gaming a Ryzen 7 2700x and 16gb of Ram.. It was my first build! I built it and seemed everything fine.. but I realized my Ryzen is stuck at 2,2ghz all the time! I am so grateful for any help Thank You

From my understanding and having a similar board that setup in bios is wrong... turning I think it was "CPU core performance" setting to off not default. Think it was explained that it wasn't a true overclock as that setting still would dynamically change core speeds and such. Which could also hurt the overclock.

If you are using 3200MHZ RAM @3200MHZ your CPU should try to reach 4266MHZ so you can get a 3:4 Ratio or just keep it @ 4000MHZ for a 4:5 ratio.
@delle77twitch636 жыл бұрын
Out of the box the 2700x with std settings in bios where everything is set to auto, and ram of 3200mhz then you will get about 4141-4200mhz on all 8 cores. That is very impressive. Also the 2700x just feel like your computer become more smooth compared to the 1800x, maybe becourse its 2nd gen ryzen. If you use the automatic overclock of ram and cpu you get the same result. ( my ram was set to 2900 and 3200mhz, maybe i should have just set everything to auto and then see what happen.. i think i do that now ;-) ) and i used symetric settings. to compare the 1800x that is 8 cores 16 threads 3600mhz and boost to 4000 ( gen 1 ryzen ) will max go to 3900mhz overclocked on all 8 cores. Both are actual really good cpu's, and can run all games with allot of fps.. A 1800x with a gtx 1080 gpu run hitman on ultra with directx 12 with an average of about 110fps ( std benchmark test in hitman ) all in all i can recommend both 2700x and 1800x ryzen, but get the 2700x if possible, or get the 1800x used and you get a killer gaming cpu for little money ;-)

I think it would be awesome if you could start including 8700k with MCE enabled in your reviews/comparisons. From what I've seen enabling mce (simple one click that makes all cores boost to 4.7ghz) put the 8700k roughly on par with the 2700x stock.

Nicolas11x12 English i am sorry man but that is not enough to determine stability at all.. Cinebench R15 and Aida65 stress test is a rather poor stability test program... You want to run AVX loads too like it avx or at least prime95 for an hour to call yourself stable. The way you doing it delivers the people a false image of stability.

0:20 "Pretty high temperatures at stock settings." What do you consider high temps? My 2700X idles at 32°C, runs around 50° during a typical gaming load, and around 68°C when all 16 threads are 100% doing video rendering. These temps are fine. The full load temp is a lil warm, but it's not being run like that 24/7 nor is it near what the CPU tops out at.

It's also weird because XMP for the 3600 RAM (paired with the 2700x) defaults to 2133... it can't figure it out on its own. Currently, I'm running 3.9ghz w/ 3200 CL 16 RAM. +Andy S AMDs processors don't like heat as much as Intels do. 80 C is too much. Do you have a X470 motherboard? If so look into UEFI and see if you can find precision boost override somewhere or something similar. If you do then you can manually set various voltage, frequency and thermal targets and the CPU will do its best to meet those while still going to a lower and more power efficient level when you don't need the performance or those targets just can't be meet for whatever reason.
@Andre-li1kp6 жыл бұрын
I dont really know how to do that, heh. But yea, I got Asus rog strix x470-f motherboard.

The boost works off of temperature headroom so you want to run as cool as possible when running XFR/PBO bclk OC. You can attain a boost of 43.5x on xfr hence the need for the bclk OC so you can go beyond 4.35ghz on boost. As long as you can cool the voltages its fine, been running mine at 4.45ghz all core boost and 4.56ghz 1-4cores since 2700x launched on 1.5v+ and never gets above 65c. No degradation whatsoever as heat is the factor that degrades the components and all voltage does by itself is cause electromigration which happens very very slowly. Invest in some good cooling and you will be good to go with getting higher boost clocks. I run at those frequencies by running chilled air through the case at 50f all the time.
@xGaMErZzZPrOx5 жыл бұрын
80c under full load is pretty normal, but just make sure to clean the cpu fan and heatsink every 2 months or so, from experience, a dusty fan/ heatsink will make my gtx 1080 run up to 10c hotter than after a good cleaning, even 15c if i dont clean it for long enough, and cpus can run around 5-10c hotter uncleaned. If your cpu is at 80 fan and heatsink might need cleaned but 80c isnt gonna hurt your cpu, but you should watch carefully if it goes to 85+. Also make sure your case is adequately ventilated, it can make a huge difference.
