In my native language "Cao" is very similar to the word "Itchy" and "Pee" is very close to the word "Vagina". Put together was a slur that was commonly used to describe "Sluts". I miss the old DW's , the PS 2 golden age, where it felt like you where just a part of the army, and had to work together with your force to secure victory instead of the solo victory lap it later became. In DW 2, the army can even route the entire map of the first Yellow Turban stage all by itself when you do nothing, though they are unable to land the killing blow on the boss.

Dynasty Warriors 4 was the one that introduced me to the series and to this day its remained my favorite in the series. Just so you know, Yuan Shao tells you to "Ignore Lu Bu, Pursue Dong Zhou!" When his army arrives at Hu Lao Gate. Its possible to miss the voice line since it only triggers once he reaches the gate, and he doesnt begin his charge until Hu Lao Gate is breached, and then it takes him about 2 or 3 minutes to reach the gate.

My first encounter with Lu Bu was basically this; None of the characters names stood out to me yet because I was new to the franchise and everyone's name mostly blended together to my eyes/ears so I mostly ignored what officers screamed because I didn't know who was talking to whom. I choose Dian Wei (I called him Dawn Wayne) because his name stood out just enough that I knew if someone was talking to or about me. Put a lot of time into this character over the series and is kind of a favorite because of it. Doesn't hurt that he looks cool in most iterations as well. Anyway, I had like 80% of my health when I approached some guy (Lu Bu) and I knocked him over with a jump attack. He then did the same thing to me getting up and I died instantly. I had put in some grind up to this point and I'm half sure I was playing on Easy too and I was like 30+ minutes into the level to slow roll my way through the levels (as intended?). Oof; So you learn the name Lu Bu and avoid him until you're a much higher level. Eventually you get a feel for how strong you need to be at minimum to attempt nearing Lu Bu because you can absolutely cheese him. Generally the Shin Musou adds that burning damage which is a majority of where the damage comes from in certain games. I can't believe how much of this franchise I've played but I started to steer away from it when they made their Renbu system version and kind of ruined all my favorite characters and everyone had the same 4 weapons. :(

To be fair, yes, defeating Lü Bu while in low level, or just level 1, should have it's achievement. Lü Bu is broken, I don't quite remember, but mostly, he is broken and OP. 1. Using Spear, but handling it like it's a long stick, holding it on the end of the spear, as if it has no weight whatsoever. Even the best lancer can't comprehend using a spear like it's a stick, he is a berserker class alright. 2. His move, I don't remember which one, but one of them is basically helicopter swinging his spear horizontally over and over while giving you stun, boy, even in level 1, a Lü Bu you used has better chance to defeat his own self as enemy, far more than other characters you know. His move set are designed to be OP. 3. I don't remember which one again, but the game has effect like fire, wind or ice, or lightning and wind blast. My Lü Bu casted offensive wind aura around himself while attacking , without even using any elemental perk from the equipment.

I tried the same thing on hardest difficulty to really challenge myself. Finally gave up after months of frustration. I was able to handle him pretty well that those duels would actually look like I was the superior fighter compared to Lu Bu. The only thing I was unable to overcome was his health regeneration. It always seemed like my Musou attack would end 1 or 2 hits away from killing him, then he got full health. I was thinking there must be a sweet spot where you can get his health down to just enough that would not trigger regenaration, then you would have to back off and survive to get your Musou charged up, then deliver a perfect combo that hits every single slash and thrust, no whiff at all, to finish him off. Never found that sweet spot 😤

Honestly if AI didn't slow the game down to a crawl the idea of the NPC units being able to overwhelm you because you're in too deep into enemy lines is a great idea that should be explored further. Maybe if you make the commanding troops more active. Like commanding characters to attack a fort or reinforce a location to move enemy troops away from where you are so your units can push harder into lighter defended places and so lower morale. Though I don't think I can trust Koei tecmo to get the balance and mechanics right.

A fine video and a good look back at the entirety of the series as well. I hold many of the same opinions as you. DW4 is by far the hardest and, in my opinion, the most iconic Lu Bu fight. He challenges you to a duel in which you have almost no chance of winning, and only surviving by the skin of your teeth. If you then decide to fight him afterwards its best to keep allied officers away from him as he will drill through them like they're paper.

In DW4 they introduced a counter attack (hold guard, press triangle right before the enemy swing lands) this grants you an unblock able attack that will knock down all enemies including officers trying to grab you. This will chip down every in game enemy.

@Serlock4869 his reach is long, and the ai takes full advantage of that for runaway players. If you stand your ground, he gets in circle range, which guarantees a free counter hit. His basic attacks are punishable on square 4 by counter, and so is his triangle 1 grab (easier than the basic due to being slow). Weapon grinding is fun when you full counter to kill Lubu.

My favourite fact about DW1 being such a different game is that it's the reason why the japanese titles always seem to be 1 number behind. While the english titles continued the numbering after DW1, the japanese titles appended 真 ("Shin" meaning "True") to the beginning, thus always being 1 number behind.

Lu Bu really was the original Him. The low health musou trick was always the way to go, especially on higher difficulties. I think 4 was truly the peak, the duel system was so fun. Still had bodyguards and your custom character could be used to play the story. Just so airtight imo. Great video!

So. This is going to sound really funny to hardcore fans lol My first encounter with Lu Bu was in Dynasty Warrior's Advance where he appears at level 10 on the very first Level of the Wu and Shu stories. You are level 1. I didn't know you could retreat from battles as a kid so, I got stuck on Hu Lao Gate because of a Lu Bu for like Hour's. He's unreasonably OP in this because the combat is so simple, you can't block his attacks, he has a weapon with Fire Damage on it and almost every hit from him knocks you down. Luckily in the Shu Version your supposed to basically just stall and retreat from him, in the Wu version he will usually ignore the player in favor of your allies but you can still end up in his way and then he'll actively pursue you. And no, there isn't a line saying "DO NOT Pursue Lu Bu." Edit: It's also plausible that if your REALLY bad, like I was as a kid, Lu Bu just plows through all your forces on the Wu Side before you can even reach the end and cause you to lose lol Damn being a kid and bad at games is hilarious.

DW 4 was my first DW game and I also ended up facing Lu Bu with Xiahou Dun so it was cool seeing you using the same guy. I think maybe I waited longer to go after Lu Bu though bc I fought him within the castle grounds. It was pouring rain and only two men were left, my commander and I vs the legend. It was an extremely cinematic experience with the two of us desperately struggling to keep him in check. Im barely hanging on with a sliver of red, my musou bar recharging but with my commanders life (and the mission) on the line, I couldn't afford to run. I had to go crazy blocking, aggroing, running and interrupting with musou attacks. All while rain poured around us and smothered the bodies of all our fallen comrades. Not having some kind of cool final blow for such a monstrous battle seemed like a anticlimactic, missed opportunity for DW4 though. That one battle alone secured my cash for the next four DW games, though. Was such a great experience.

I randomly played a DW2 demo on a ps2 demo disc and was obsessed. Went out and bought the DW3 game as soon as i saved up 40$ from chores. I played so much DW3. Every character. All the time. Lu bu was a monster and the voice acting was so fun. I loved that game. Sadly none of the other DW games really come close to 3. I hated 4 and 5 was okay (mainly due to DW Empires). But I stopped playing them later on as they kept getting worse.

Duels were what hooked me to dw as a whole. 5 was a nice quality of life improvement and legends was fun, but samurai warriors empire was the best empire title. Amazingly fun and well crafted.

The duels were badass. I think I just enjoyed a sillier and bit clunkier version of the game versus a serious toned one. It's been so long since I played them now, but would love a genuine new upgraded version of the games.

When I was 8 years old, playing as Xiahou Dun to fight Lu Bu in DW 4 was a nightmare and especially in the DUEL. But as I got older, I found that you can counter attack on enemies so that makes it a little easier to fight Lu Bu. Same goes for DW 6.

They said that, he beat me, then I took it personally. It is always my mission to beat him. Even in 4 Empires where you can duel him 1v1 on the hardest difficulty. Did it fair and square, meaning I didn’t look out the arena with my bow to let my musou charge up then attack him with a musou attack. I actually fought him with Liu Bei’s weapon. I did it since my friends told me I couldn’t. I believe I have it record on a VHS somewhere.

Just to win the first level in WO4, you have to pursue Lu Bu. Gameplay wise at least. After the gameplay, Lu Bu uses cutscene power to the max to make your party tactically retreat.

He was good, but Sun Jian was better, I don't know why but he hit like a freight train in DW4 and 5, of all the characters I attempted, Sun Jian was the easiest, I also succeeded with Cao Cao, Guan Yu, Zhou Yun(he had an easier time than Guan Yu for whatever reason), Zhuge Liang(spammed long ranged attacks and stayed the heck away) and Xiahou Dun.

On the early DW games you should try the fire arrows, makes it easy, fire arrows + charge shot = stun and on fire. get ready to shoot again right as he stops being stunned and repeat. You can easily lock him down when you get the timing right. and when you musou charged use to juggle him when he's on fire too.

I played 3 first as a teen, but 4 is the one that’s close to my heart. 4 also has Lu Bu’s best theme imo, that intro is just plain menacing and does a great job of building up this fight.

For me I originally played 3 on a demo and 4 was actual one played through. Definitely game genre I truly love. I hate what actually happens to LuBu but is understandable. My favorite characters are LuBu, Zhou Yu, Zhou Tai, Cao Pi, Xaihou Dun, Zhang He, Sun Ce, and character creation.

I'm glad DW4 took 1st place in this video. It's not only because of all the facts you mention are true, there's also one part that made him more dangerous: The grapple attack. That game was the first to have this simple feature added in combat and Lu Bu's grapple attack was overkill. Even if you jump to avoid his grapple, his weapon could still knock you out of the air and right when you get back up he'll swing his long ass weapon in time to damage you good.

Dynasty Warriors 3 was the first game I've played but I was too young to remember. DW4 is the one that made me cry and panic everytime Lu Bu appeared. He haunted my dreams literally and that battle was a big struggle

My friend and I did in fact pursue Lu Bu in DW 5. It was the first time we saw him and we looked at each other and thought yeah right we're kicking ass. We were playing on normal almost done with the map and he just smacked me a couple of times and I died. We were speachless and thats when officially he became my favorite character.

DW4 holds a special place in my heart. Btw The mechanics of officer buffing himself up seems to existed since the second game (we called it the sparking or burning due to the heat haze aura around the officer). But I think it becoming most noticeable in DW4. For example, in DW4 Lu Bu can buff himself after getting a hard knockdown, he will squat down for a bit, like how your character doing a musou charge before covering himself in the heat haze and instead granting himself random buff. But the sure fire way to make him do this is to run past Lu Bu into the city and defeat Diao Chan. This will instantly enrage Lu Bu into a permanent burning mode. You can also do this in any stage that features them both together.

My first game was 4, but I've gone back as far as 3, and even to this day, the name "Lu Bu" continues to instill a certain kind of fear in me that I can't explain. Even if he's CONSIDERABLY easier in the newer games. It's been ingrained into to me for so many years and I still can't escape it. That being said, I still remember this one time when I was a kid... I had a dream about Lu Bu picking me up from school on the back of Red Hare. He jumped over the gate, approached and when I climbed up onto the horse, everyone was incredibly jealous of me. lol Lu Bu scared the shit out of me, yet made me dream about him a lot. I'm not sure what that says about me. (':

DW2: hit him three times so he's not knocked down DW6: whack him from a horse DW7: in Wu/Shu's version, he stands in front of the gate and flees if his health gets low. In Wei's version, he appears after the gate is broken down and lunges after Yuan Shao. So, he essentially flees from the two Hua Xiong killers and not Xiahou Yuan.

I remember playing Dynasty Warriors 4 with my 2 cousins and getting a "4th" weapon for the first time ever (We were playing since Dynasty 2) on Guan Yu. We immediately loaded up Hu Lao Gate and I squared up against Lu Bu in one of the most epic fights I ever had. I was almost on paar with him, becauase my attacks finally made him flinch. I say almost, because I had to heal once, but that was sooo epic nevertheless. I never cared much about character progression, but that was sooo rewarding, also due to how iconic Lu Bu was, when testing it.

I wanna say there was a mission in Dynasty warriors 3 extreme legends where you can make Lu bu more and more angry by doing things like killing Diao Chan and keeping his daughter from escaping in a carriage. He can 2-3 shot a fully maxed out character once you're done doing everything that can make him stronger.

Yeah just as you said it I was about to type that in the older games in the series your bodyguards and even the commander of the force will tell you to fall back if you are too far from your allies. I think it stopped in 5 though. DW 2 and 3 are definitely very challenging especially the fn archers lmao the soldiers will mess you up. DW 4 is my favorite in general though. Lu Bu was pretty hard in that and a fun fact is during Weis story when you get Xia Pi you can avoid him and he'll show up at Guan Du and make that battle even harder for you depending on how things go for the level.

Another of the best things on Dynasty 4 are the 'hidden stages', where you had to do specific things on certain stages, so you unlock an extra battle, which can unlock hidden characters too... Not to mention that all level 4 weapons were unlocked only by doing specific objectives for each character...

D4 does have a line about not persuing Lu Bu and to go straight to Dong Zhuo. The same difficulty from Hu Lao gate is continued by making the same difficulty encounter for Lu Bu if you play the Wei kingdom's story. I remembered doing that as a kid and thinking, I have to fight this craziness a second time?! It was a very diffcult but fun thing to do.

During my first playthrough of 9 (I was playing as Cao Cao) I was playing the mission where you had to escape the castle after his failed assassination attempt of Dong Zhuo. I was getting chased by lu bu and jumped into the moat to try to get away and he followed me into the water. As soon as I climbed out, I turned around and stun-locked him with basic arrows until he died. I then proceeded to get the platinum for the game

the hardest lu bu encounter i played is probably the top of the goddamn 50 stories tower mode in samurai warriors,at the point you meet him, the *normal* enemies already delete your healthbar in a matter of second and then you find this absolute menace of a guy as the final boss when the stakes couldnt possibly be any higher and a moveset you know nothing about (as a new* player)

Maybe it is my then child brain kicking in, but I feel like Lu Bu was the hardest in 3 solely because his range was absurd and the "red health musuo" cheese was the only viable tactic to beat him early game. 4 had elemental charge moves that gave you another option with certain characters if memory serves. DW2 and 3 were by far the best, the ''normal'' soldires should be a major threat to your character. Your items were much more interesting in the early games also making you decide to take items that buff your bodyguard units or yourself.
