I’m an old Texas RV hand and been to Taos many times over 50 years. If you go from Possum Kingdom, West Texas route, you go Lubbock, Clovis Ft Sumner, Clines Corners and Santa Fe. If you go from DFW, you take 287 to Amarillo and I-40 to Clines Corners and Santa Fe to Taos. The Las Vegas NM route is shorter miles but a twisty two lane road over a pass that takes longer. That road has no shoulders and would be a bitch if you had a blowout. From Palo Duro, I’d opt the Amarillo I-40 route. GPS can get you in messes pulling a rig and I’ve had my share. I live in Garland and just returned from my annual trek up north and Taos and Red River are always on my return trip list. Btw, there are numerous free RV full hookup places in the Texas Panhandle that I use to offset fuel cost when I go up there as a first night stay. Dumas has one that works from DFW departure and Muleshoe has one that works on a West Texas departure if your goal is hitting the pretty and cool high country quickest.

I felt your anguish on this video. I have a warning for you and others if you make the mistake my wife and I did last summer approaching Taos from the southwest. We were driving north on highway 285 and took 567 to go east to 68. We have a 30ft class A Airstream towing a 15ft enclosed trailer with my Goldwing inside. This road should only be attempted in a single vehicle..preferably off road 4x4. All was well until we started down the grade into the canyon. We made it through unscathed but if only I could share pics of the road. Best advice is to not attempt in any RV or Camper. Happy Trails! I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work!

That is the route my wife and I took years ago headed to Red River, NM. We passed thru Amarillo on 40 then turned right at San Jon in NM and headed to Springer before going into Cimmaron and up to Red River to stay. Red River has a nice RV place for yall at the far end of town. I have two old church members who went up every year to help run the campground for the season. We were driving my Subaru Forester and stayed at the Best Western in town. Since it was off season in Oct. I got a discount on the room for 58 bucks a night (normally 320.00). Stayed for a week and drove all over the place up there. Fun stuff. Blessings for a safe trip.

More storage a place to hide if weather turns, a change room when out there hiking 2nd get yourself a laminated truckers atlas....it's great for situations like the one here which involved cows ( which I'm totally cool with old farm boy). The Waggs used goggle to get to Makers Mark, & it lead us down a goat path that was bearly big enough for a truck. We have had issues with goggle in the car, so we back it up with the atlas. This is fun to watch. You kids went the opposite way that we did. We went from a 30' travel trailer to a 35' 5th wheel. As always there's pluses and minuses to both. The biggest change for us was the height of the 5'er. Length wise I think we pull at the same overall length of our old truck and travel trailer. The other thing with the 5th wheel is that it tracks more to the inside of a turn than a bumper pull, which can be challenging at times. One suggestion to make hitching up way easier. We went from a traditional weight distribution hitch with sway bars and super heavy hitch, to an Andersen weigh distribution hitch. It made hooking up and unhooking so much easier, and the hitch itself is way lighter. Hahaha!!! Nice work getting through the cattle drive. I only laugh because we have so been there before. Going down a road that you hope won't just end and then you have to back out for 10 miles. Looking forward to watching your travel trailer adventures.

"Stickers" are seeds. Its a way for a plant to spread its progeny over a wide area. The sticker becomes attached to the fur, feathers, skin of an animal that eventually leaves the area. At some point the animal removes the sticker or the sticker falls off on its own and germinates where ever it lands. Other plants like dandelions use the wind to do this. Plants like apples produce a fruit with undigestible seeds inside. An animal eats the fruit along with the undigestible seeds. The animal leaves the area, the seed passes though its digestive system unharmed and at some point is "pooped out by the animal in a nice little package of fertilizer.

You'll probably hate my comment. I would go with a 5th wheel because of basically a free bedroom above the truck bed (you may have had a much bigger 5th wheel before so I'm not judging) and more driving control. I grew up in NW Texas, so all those Texas comments are understandable. I currently live in NW New Mexico, so I can offer a little more useless commentary on that front...I would suggest a smaller camper for northern NM and SW Colorado. I don't currently have an RV, but if I did, it would probably be an overlander. If you can't afford an overlander, just buy a tent. That is how I spent many years enjoying the 4-corners. If getting there is half of the battle, most people can't afford an RV that can do it, but many more people can get there in just a fairly capable vehicle. Buy a tent, save a cowboy/cowgirl/plowgirl etc. Peace, Love!

We have done well for 3 years in our 5ver avoiding bad roads and low overpasses...with 2 exceptions....an 8 mile washboard logging road in the UP of Michigan and a 12 foot train overpass near Saratoga Springs NY...BUTmaybe its time. Haha.

Y'all sure took the scenic route! We use google only for truck stops, rest areas, and zooming in to see areas we want to go. We found Co-Pilot, and while the design is not perfect, it always leads us on the best routes for our rig. We also have RV Life but mainly use that for trip planning. The gps hasn't always been good to us🫣safe traveling Road Smiths!

When we tow the fifth wheel we are much more careful. We use Hammer as well and if in doubt I look at street view as well. With the little one we don’t have to be so precise. And for that road we clearly weren’t. Haha.

Amarillo-Channing-Dalhart-Springer-Cimmeron-Eagles Nest-Taos. I don’t know how you managed to go the way you went. Being from Amarillo this is the route to take.
@TheRoadSMITHS6 ай бұрын
LOL we aren’t sure how we managed either! 😂 If we had had our 35 Fiver, we absolutely would not have taken that route, but with the Lance it was doable! Would we do it again…absolutely not! Lesson let! 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting!

There’s so much traffic construction going on in Taos. this is the summer to stay away

Yes, it’s quite a mess in the downtown area right now! We just arrived in Estes Park and they’re doing much the same downtown road construction! Ugh! Bad timing on our part! Thanks for watching and commenting!

When we tow the 5th wheel we are much more cautious and research the roads more. RVer reviews, Google Maps street view etc etc. With this smaller rig, we felt like we did not have to be so cautious...but maybe now we will be. Haha. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

Never ever trust Google Maps!It will get you lost or worse. Yeah, NM-120 is posted that you shouldn't take an RV up it. We've gone up that road several times just in our pickup truck, and it was a pretty well-graded dirt road but was somewhat rough. I'm used to mountain driving, having lived in the mountains for more than 30 years, and you couldn't pay me to take a trailer, 5er, or a motor home up NM-120. You didn't need to go back down I-25. Just turn south at Ocaté on NM 442 to La Cueva and Mora on NM 518 to Ranchos de Taos, then into Taos on NM 68. It's very scenic but be prepared for mountain driving (winding roads, steep grades, etc.) The other way is through Cimarron, up Cimarron Canyon through Eagle Nest over Palo Flechado Pass into Taos via the NM 585 south by-pass. Don't ever take US 64 straight into the heart of Taos from the east towing a trailer. It's just too tight to maneuver. Taos Valley RV Park is in a really nice location for sightseeing and visiting the area attractions. Safe travels!

That little experience was certainly a “lesson learned” for us! Looking back on it, I guess it wasn’t too bad, but we absolutely will not do that again! Thanks for the info which will be helpful to us on our next trip there! Mountain driving with RVs is not for the faint of heart! I will say, Ken’s skills have improved! Thanks again and stay safe out there!

Google based maps can get you stuck or killed in the southwest. We have rescues every year from people following these navigation sources.
@TheRoadSMITHS6 ай бұрын
We definitely can see how that would happen! Ken is usually very informed about our routes before we head out, but this one kinda got by him. After that experience, I’m sure that won’t happen again 😝 Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Yes, a fun road, but not towing anything. Having been on that route a number of years back towing the motorcycles, coming back from Pagosa Spring, Taos, Angel Fire then on NM 120 was the worst. Only it started to storm really bad until Abilene. Then the skies finally cleared for the rest of the trip back to Houston.⛈

Oh how funny you know that road so well! It is quite beautiful and we learned that we really love Pagosa Springs! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Safe travels to you!

It was beautiful up there but taking a trailer on that road is not a good idea and since we really did not know what was ahead and with no where to turn around it made it pretty stressful.

It’s unbelievable how many people are abandoning “real homes” for RV’s. Used to be a family HOME, was first and foremost. I understand it, believe me. Cities are collapsing, crime is better than working, and the police can’t stop the crime. The housing market is going to collapse. Wow. The democrats have really destroyed or once GREAT COUNTRY.
