In this video, I explain why I would never choose a handgun over a shotgun for home defense, despite what many people think about the length difference. Some argue that a shotgun is too long to clear a house with, but I’ll show you why that’s not the case.
📹 Video Highlights:
Length Comparison: Measuring the real difference in length when holding a handgun versus a shotgun properly.
Realistic Home Defense Strategy: Why I believe it’s smarter to stay put and wait rather than clear your house during a home invasion.
Practical Advice: Tips for positioning yourself in a home defense situation, whether protecting your kids or holding your ground.
Imagine a person running at you with a knife-would you rather have a handgun or a shotgun? Find out why the shotgun may be the better choice.

@Cutecompton people will say everybody thinks they're in CoD when they have these heroic plans to "get all the bad guys invading their house"... The actual way to treat this kind of situation is like you're in the last of us or some other horror game. You don't know how many people there are, what they're armed with, what their intent is, don't put yourself in a situation you can't get out of. If you have other family in the house, the smartest (and imo bravest) thing to do is yell that you're armed from your secured position and let them either flee or funnel into your line of fire.

The truth is- sometimes if you get up at night, YOU WILL BUMP INTO THINGS IN YUR OWN HOUSE wit the lights off. Who hasn't stubbed their toe on a dresser or bed-post walking thru the house at night? You haven't gone to a relatives house and tried to go to the bathroom at night and bumped into something you didn't see, even if you had been there before? Of course you have. This is very good advice. I had to defend my life with a full size 9mm pistol last year and was forced to go face to face just outside my bedroom ( fiance was in room behind me, also armed with a 9mm) with a methed up man much bigger than I who broke in specifically to kill. I succeeded, but I almost died cause I got shot. Broke my left non dominant arm and then entered my chest and bounced around my whole body. I drew first blood putting 5 rounds of 9mm in critical spots center mass rapidly and he still was able to squeeze off enough rounds in random directions to get a couple hits on me. If I had a shotgun I wouldn’t have almost lost my life, would have saved myself from so much loss and turmoil resulting from my injuries. Yall stay safe out there and dont rely on the police to protect you. Also, dont have thumb turn deadbolt locks on doors with glass in them. Big fucking mistake. If there is glass, double key only (key needed on both sides) and have at least one non glass security door that has thumb turns for emergency egress in case of fire

I’ve bounced around from different firearm options when it comes to home defense. And my opinion is constantly evolving and changing. Each type of firearm comes with a set of pros and cons. The things I personally take into account are “how much ammo can I hold?” “Is there a high risk of over penetration and putting my neighbors at risk?” “Does my firearm allow me to maintain 3 points of contact or only two?” “If I do need to move to another part of the house, how compact and maneuverable am I with that firearm?” Currently, my opinion of the best type of home defense firearm for me is a PDW style firearm chambered in 9mm with hollow points. I currently have a MP5 setup with a light and suppressor for my “go to” in the event of a home invasion. However, my opinions are subject to change, and I don’t believe there is any wrong answer as to what people prefer

Unless you have them locked up well...but then they take longer to access so...that's another issue. As someone who did alot of time on the range with people using shotguns. Let me tell you a pump action will lose the fight more often than it saves. As people under fight or flight stress and who are under trained will fail to cycle a pump properly. Unless its a semi auto system it will likely fail you. A shotgun seems simple. But a lot can go wrong with it. I trust mechanical systems more than feel good human ability. Plus I advocate for a longer barrel in a defense firearm. However, when no clear target is present or in hiding. The length can easily be used against the defender. Additionally, every caliber will go through multiple standard housing walls. Even bird shot. When you use a shotgun you merely increase your chances of hitting something or someone unintended.

This tactic only applies to a situation in which you had the benefit of time & preparation. Like, hopefully, your home security system alerted you about a forced entry. But what are the chances of that happening & the intruder/s kept going with their plan anyway? Putting away the statistical fact that guns in general tend to be used more often than not (intentionally or accidentally) by their owners on themselves or a lover/family/household member, the confrontation would already be most likely at hand, like the intruder is already inside your bedroom as you slept & already physically tackling you (or is just about to). A hand gun &/or tazer that you could reach for easily at a location that you know by heart even in the dark would I think be your best bet. However, if it was someone like Ted Bundy who, during his last murder spree at a sorority house in Florida, was able to go through several bedrooms to kill or severely injure the women by bashing their heads with a baseball bat while in deep sleep without making much noise, you'd have to be a light sleeper or lucky (or both, we hope!) to survive that, regardless of the kind of weapon that you own.

More importantly if at night keep your room dark and a hallway light on to illuminate and backlight the intruder. Not only does this allow you to identify it’s not a family member but you maintain your night vision while the perps eyes will blinded by day vision not being able to see you. Even if the intruder is able to distinguish the light you still have a massive advantage as it takes 5-8 minutes for your eyes just to start adjusting to night vision and 40 minutes to reach complete night vision.

I will say this, short of a magnum or desert eagle, when adrenaline and fear is flowing, you can empty half a clip before you do enough damage to stop a determined attacker... that's what 6-7 shots? Only need to pull that shotgun trigger once, and even the most drugged up attacker will stop and think about his life's decisions.

@CajunBoyJake Current medical facility I work at. They once brought in a patient strapped to a gurney. Police shot him 12 times with a standard issue 9mm. Somehow didn't hit a single major organ or artery. Blood work showed no drugs in his system, but he was having a psychotic episode. He had to be restrained because he still had enough strength to be a threat to staff in the ambulance. Now another patient is nicknamed stubby....was caught on the business end of a sawed off 12 guage, trap gun at 10 yards out. Wasn't even aimed. He hit a trip wire and it turned his right thigh and calf muscle into hamburger meat. Pistol is a suggestion to leave u alone. 12 guage is your last warning before the express train to the pearly gates.

@@4thwardlinden That is better than risking your life to protect a TV or microwave, if I go out to check and there are 4 guys with guns the chances that I will prevail are slim. What I would do, and again this is only if its me and my wife at home and we are in our room sleeping (when kids are home we have a contingency plan in place already), is hunker down and be ready for them trying to enter the room. I have video cameras at home (my dog stays home while we are at work so we use cameras to check on her) but if you don't have cameras I would yell something like this: "Police has been called, leave now, I am armed and ready, better leave now". Yuo never know, It could be your son arriving home drunk or so many other things, many cases have been reported of shooting relatives thinking it was an intruder". If I still think there is an intruder I would call 911 and tell them the situation and tell them if you are not certain of an intruder in the house. The most important thing is to be prepared in advance, have a plan after thinking as many possible scenarios so you are not caught off guard. Fantastic advice. Most houses have all bedrooms upstairs, as well. Get the family into the upstairs master bathroom, hold guard at or near the top of the stairwell, try to pick an unpredictable spot. I absolutely agree. Never bring a knife to a gunfight, and handguns are secondary (backup) weapons to long guns. 31 years in the Army and civilian law enforcement, I always carried a "short" shotgun when entering buildings while everyone else had their "sexy" AR 15's. Shotguns, in my opinion, are much more versatile, as you can use a huge variety of rounds and different barrels. The full length stock is NOT a disadvantage (overall weapon length), as you can shoulder it for aimed shots, or tuck the stock under your arm for close quarters. Great video!😎👍

I would actually argue that for a normal non-specialized civilian a handgun would be more viable for self defense in this situation for 2 reasons. 1) The average american citizen can not handle the recoil of most shotguns without injuring themselves or losing stability of the weapon. 2) The average citizen would likely be extremely high in anxiety and adrenaline and would make reloading or repumping drastically more difficult than being able to spray 9 or 11.

@@yeetusdeleetus4697 Good points. Yes, a 12 gauge shotgun (again, depending on the ammo used) can be quite a handful for a lot of people - especially smaller women. I remember how the women in our department used to HATE our semi annual shotgun qualifications 😅. However, some handguns (and ammo) can be quite a handful, too. Though thankfully, I never had to shoot at another person during my career, I did go hunting. I can tell you that in the anxiety and adrenaline you mentioned, I barely felt the recoil or hear the report when I shot animals - and that 30/06 rifle had a kick similar to a 12 guage - rough!! I'm sure human combat is similar - probably worse (they're shooting back!). Also, I personally believe handguns are harder to master for accurate shooting than long guns, although the myth that you don't have to be accurate with shotguns because they throw out a huge pattern of pellets that "surely will hit SOMETHING" is just that - a myth. Our experience with shotguns was that in the close distances (in a house/building) we were in, the patterns were usually VERY small - i.e. not much bigger than an inch or so at close distances (again, depending on ammo used). The ginormous basketball (and bigger) sized patterns you'd encounter bird hunting started opening up after about 15 meters or so. The bottom line to all of this, in my opinion, is at least occasional shooting for familiarization, and MORE shooting to become proficient with WHICHEVER weapon you have. You don't want to try and overcome the shock of recoil and figure out how the weapon works in the heat and fog of battle. When that happens, you want to be focusing on your target and relying on muscle memory. Your body will re-do something fairly automatically if you've done it repetitively in the past.

The average ball ammo pistol round and intermediate rifle cartridges as well are plenty enough to push through most walls in most homes. My concern being friendly fire if every shot doesn’t make contact with the enemy! If I shoot past an intruder due to movement or other circumstances.. I wouldn’t think bird shot would nearly as lethal if it accidentally struck someone inside or outside my home. I have to give shotgun points for this, and it’s an aspect largely overlooked! Range day, and just waking up from a dead sleep aiming is not the same and shit happens ya know! Never mind the innate fear most ppl will have or apprehension alone could cause an abnormal trigger pull making you less accurate! (For the average person) training is everything! Get some #7 shotshells. They'll not go through walls like most handgun rounds will.

@Scrumdumn Yep. Really light buckshot or birdshot is your best bet in apartment or duplex situation. Very little penetration, but a devastating effect on the first thing it hits within 10-15 yards. Hollow points also generally penetrate far less than FMJs, though over-penetration is still a concern in any caliber above 9x19.

In the rest of the world this would just be a joke, nothing more, but in the US this comment gets legit ammunition recommendations. 💀💀💀

@@LukeofSmegwhat is your point exactly? Because I'd put money on an average American family in a gunfight vs an average family in any other country 😊. Here in America we have God, Guns, and a whole lot of Guts. Don't play
