Do One-Length Irons Work?

Here’s my review from playing Wishon’s sterling single length irons for 3 seasons. I play 5-lw. 5 iron is 23 degree loft. Played around a 0-2 handicap prior to single lengths. Always been a solid ball striker. About the same swing speed as Matt (92-95 mph 7 iron, 123-125 mph driver) Pros - same weight, length, feel adds consistency. The longer you play them the better they become. Shot shaping is easier because ball position for fade/draw/low/high is the same with every club. Perfect for players who don’t or have no time to practice. The most surprising for me was how much better my wedge game became. I was a decent wedge player but the longer length and light swing weight balanced perfect for me. I don’t feel I have to crouch down anymore I’m extremely comfortable so chipping, pitch shots, and full wedge shots are the best of my life (opposite of what people would expect). I hit my 5 iron as high or higher than my old conventional 5 iron. The gap wedge can get a bit high when I get after one, but if you need to flight one down into the wind you can always choke up no big deal. My gaps seem very consistent. I didn’t go with the 4 iron though (19 degree loft at 37” is useless for me unless it’s a tee shot on a windy day) Cons Takes time to mentally adjust to shorter 5 iron and longer wedge. Not many options on wedge configuration (bounce, sole grind etc) Besides cobra all the other options are very expensive or only have a game improvement design (not the prettiest clubs for a low handicap) Since I’ve switched I’ve dropped 5 strokes now playing off a +3. Shot all my career best scores playing them. I rarely If ever practice. And when I do it’s short game/ putting / driver because hitting all 7 length irons is so easy I only need to hit 5 shots with an 8 iron and I’ve practiced all my irons. I understand they aren’t for everyone, they are different, they take an adjustment period, but the longer you play them the easier and easier they become.

It is interesting that an elite play like yourself has chosen to go down the route and using a version that could be described as a game improvement iron (although I am more than happy to be corrected on that point). What also intrigues me is their contribution to your improvement based on the fact that your practice regimen could be described as "sparse". As a category 1 golfer (as we Brits categorize players of your ability level) a drop of between 3 and 5 shots is remarkable. It certainly gives me pause for thought as to whether this is a route I should consider. Mind you I am off 16 and 61 years old.

No issues switching between single length and driver, 3 & 5 woods. You need to try them for more than 5 minutes. The benefit of single length is in how we play real golf. We don't hit clubs consecutively like u do in the test. We hit 4 iron then PW then 6 iron then GW. Switching between all these clubs with the same setup is great for consistency. I find my club distances are more consistent with single length I don't get shots that fly 20 yards longer or shorter, this particularly noticeable with the shorter irons. I'm 8hcp so not a beginner as all I hear is the same story pedalled good for beginners, I think their good for all standard of players as bryson has proved on tour. Open mind required though.

Funny I just started golf last year I just turned 50 and I am a 8 hcp. Then again I started swinging like Moe Norman with a single plane swing and setup and lots of practice at the range has made me a fairway finder its the putting that is really killing me sometimes the green just cant contain me LOL. Just have to learn to tone my putting down.

Superlative test, especially blinded test to remove any potential bias. Big shout out to John for building a one length set for TXG to test. A testament to the value TXG brings to the community. The same club head speed was very interesting. Valuable information and who might benefit. Well done TXG

Agreed, unless he’s not really used to hitting into a white screen. Wonder if that could throw him off at all. Maybe subconsciously easier to line up and hit with the projected image that you are used to? I’ve hit into mine with the projection off and it is quite different, but also I’m not him haha

I've been playing the Forged One Length for a couple years. I took them in to the shop and used the launch monitor. Finished by adjusting the lofts to level out the gaps. It works perfectly.

I switched to Cobra Forged One Lengths about a month ago, ball striking improved, no issues with gapping, overall positive experience. They’re staying in the bag!

been playing single length for about 8 yrs,took a set of Ping G10s (5-sw) had them reshafted and SSTpured all cut to 36 1/2 in. I took them to Ping and had the lie angles done using their color codes (5i moroon++ each iron stepping down .75 deg. in lie till you get to the wedges) by doing this they were within .50 deg. at the end. I had Ping remove the weights in the back of the irons (CTP) and replace them to bring all the swing weights to D-2. This was the best move I ever made in golf! Shortly after I had the clubs built I shot in the 70s for the 1st time and have never looked back! I have learned over the years that I do prefer my PW-GW-SW to step 1/4 in. shorter for those touch shots around the greens. Thanks for the Great vids guys keep it up!

I have the F9 one length. Mid to high handicap. Made the game very enjoyable and has improved my consistency. The setup is simple. My coach was skeptical and once we worked my swing it’s excellent. I only have 4 setups - Driver, 3 & 5 wood, and the 4H to 56. Very confident after 30 days and don’t see myself going back to variable length ever. Great video!

Picked up a set of f7 OL 5 months ago. I had only been golfing for 6 months at that point and my ball striking hurt my scores a lot. As a new golfer it made a huge difference after adjusting mentally to the OL concept. I made the switch because I play hockey and an inch difference in stick length is enough to feel wrong. Simplifying the swing for 7 clubs in the bag has helped me a tons. Gapping isnt great though, I'm glad you guys made that clear.

I have been an on again, off again golfer for 35 years. Because of that my swing has been fairly inconsistent (chronic shoulder issue as I have gotten older, slowed down swing speed, shorter swing length, overall strength and flexibility has degraded as I have gotten older, etc). But regardless of how inconsistent my swing has been over the years my 7 and 8 iron have always been my go-to club in terms of confidence, consistency hit-ability, and purity of contact. There were times when I couldn't get off the tee box and I would tee of with an 8 iron and just keep hitting 150 down the middle of the fairway to get on the green in regulation. So, the concept of the single lengths intrigued me because they fit my swing wheelhouse in terms of length, weighting and confidence. Since I have switched to single length I am much more consistent, much more accurate and enjoy golf so much more. I have gone from an 18+ handicap to shooting 76-82 on a regular basis. I also have single length woods on order to address that 5" change of club length swinging a driver or 3 wood that Matt mentioned. So far, the single length have worked for me and it has been a fun journey watching my score drop.

I've been playing for about 4 years and three years have been with one length clubs. A cheap set at first. Then Cobra F7 one lengths and the last year and a half with the F8 one length. I play LW, GW, SW, PW then 9 through 6 iron. Also three hybrids, 3,4 and 5. I use the hybrids in place of the long irons. My handicap is at 19 right now. When I started I was shooting 120's and the such. I love them. One swing, one set up.

When I made the switch to single length irons, the biggest benefit to my game was ball striking. I feel confident standing over the ball with any iron in my hand now, where I didn’t with a traditional setup. I hit fat or thin shots much less frequently, which really makes playing golf more enjoyable for me. That said, I have noticed the differences in gapping you highlight in the video and it took me a while to get use to hitting the long irons so low, as I generally had a pretty naturally high ball flight. I also made the change to JumboMax grips and saw my natural draw/hook ball flight straighten out as well. Now, I feel more comfortable trying to shape a ball (slightly) by minor grip adjustments. For me it’s been a great combination. Although, I could not for the life of me get used to the single length hybrid. I couldn’t widen my stance or bend my knees enough it seemed to make good contact every time. You mention in the video that you feel the jump in length from 37” to a traditional length hybrid or fairway wood or driver would be tough, but truly it’s not and really didn’t take any time to adjust to, as those clubs and swings are inherently different than irons. I feel like the added length to the short irons and wedges makes it easier to keep good tempo and avoid over swinging smaller clubs in my short game as well. All in all, I’ve loved the single length iron experiment and look forward to more videos like this. Thanks as always for your great content!

I started gaming the F7 One Length two years ago. 11hc. I have always had trouble with the 5i. As soon as I put the One Lengths in the bag, I dropped several strokes a round. I love the 5i now and my handicap is down to a 9 at this point. Love them!

I have a set of single length irons. I've had them for just under four years and that's about how long I've been golfing. Sw, aw, pw, 9-4 and I've struggled to use any of them consistently and I think it's because I have 2 hybrids 2 fairway drivers and a driver that are all the normal length. I removed them from my bag 3 weeks ago and dropped 10 strokes when playing 9 holes on my Monday afternoon league. I've also started realizing that I can notice the reason I catch to much grass and have been slowly adjusting my body knee bend, bend at the waist hand position to get a crisp contact with the ball to maximize the distance. At this point I'm not sure if I will reintroduce my drivers and I just added an 18 degree driving iron at 37" as well. I think I might have a chance to par some of the par 5 holes on the coarse I play with the new iron.

Purchased a set of onelengths the F9s and love them... Always went awry with long irons and haven't played consistently for years. Distance has never been an issue. Feel confident with every club it will be close to on line and am getting prodigious back spin off my short irons, averaging 10ft spin back. Think I could easily play to 12 - 14 with these clubs, would never happen before due to a few wayward ( very wayward) long irons. Great for intermittent golfers!

I started playing these exact clubs this season. Believe it or not my 5i and 4i are my favorite clubs now. The longer "shorter" clubs have taken the biggest adjustment period but really only a couple range sessions. Overall very happy with them and they help me enjoy the game more. I just step up and hit the ball in the same spot with the same swing every time. I also have no problem adjusting when I pull out the long 3w and driver. I do wonder if I should have gotten the more bladed ones though.

I’ve been playing OL for the past year. I enjoyed the experiment. My ball striking did improve a bit. Where I suffer is my 3W and full swing non one length wedges. Like my Old 56. Play one length and you have to adjust for a short length wedge and sometimes I would catch it very thin. 3W I’d be behind the ball. Driver never changed for me tho. I just was fitted into a set of standard length cobra forged tec black irons so I will be adjusting back to regular. I think they are a very good set for beginner or high handicap that struggles with consistent hitting. If you can hit the 7 good you can hit all these clubs.

One benefit of single length clubs is for golfers with bad backs. Not having to bend over as much with short irons is easier on the back, and improves performance, especially later in a round, if the back is not as sore.

I would like to see the test with the OL forged. Matt has too much speed for the F9 OL I think. I'm on my third season with one length and I really like them. My average score dropped from 88 to 81.9. Not all of that can be attributed to the OL clubs because I have also made some swing changes, but they certainly didn't hurt. I think they give me a lot more consistency in my iron game. The lofted clubs being longer is a lot more comfortable for me. I have the F8 OL now, and the only gripe I have with them is the loft gapping. I had to adjust them to be closer to 4 degrees apart as I could get them to get consistent gaps. I probably should have got the OL forged also, which I may do going forward.

I like the comment about one length irons and new beginners to the game. My wife tried picking up the game before we had kids a couple years ago but never got to the point of consistency moving from one club to the next. OL clubs would be hugely beneficial in that there is only one swing for her to basically pick up, and that would hopefully transition to a more pleasant time on the course. As for the established golfer, you’d just need to test and retest with different loft adjustments to fine tune the distances. Bryson proves that it can be done, and maybe I’ll have the time to do it myself one day. Great video!

I play off a 19 HC. I've spent a lot of money on lessons and still play s***. I was fitted for +1" length clubs. Swing speed w/ driver around 94 mph. In standard set, I can hit the 5-8i well. My game really starts to fall off after about 4 holes with the wedges when my back can start getting sore. I wanted to try the one lengths because the shorter clubs would be the same length as the 7 iron. I just got a set of Cobra F9 One Lengths a week ago. I haven't had them on the course, but here's my 300 ball report. My back isn't as sore even though I practiced with the wedges as much as usual. I hit the wedges more consistently and without my usual miss with them - with the short clubs I start coming over the top and hit a pull or shank. I had an 18 yd gap between the GW and PW. That is a concern, but maybe it's something that will even out as I get used to them. It could be related to the fact that I tend to forward press and was forward pressing my PW more than I was my GW. The yardage gaps between the GW and SW was normal. Everything above the PW was normal. And I can hit my low 45 yd knockdown with the SW. The set came with a 24 degree hybrid. I am still not convinced with it because I hit it the same distance as the 6i. But I wonder if it is because it's a matte black that I'm losing sight of it and am not lining up properly with it. Then again I have not had problems hitting my old hybrid so I might just use that or buy the 5i for the set. I've always hit a regular iron better than a hybrid at that loft, and just carry a regular 19H instead of a FW since I rarely hit one anyway. My longest par 5s are 475 and if I drive the ball 220-230 and hit a 5i 185 yds, it's just a wedge shot in anyway. Pros: my back wasn't as sore. I think I'll be more consistent. Maybe I'll still play like crap but if I hit the ball better and play like crap I'll have more fun and that's what it's about. Cons: I shelled out money on something that probably won't make any difference and I'll still play like crap.

Hi folks, as a mid handicapper (-11 to -15), i am now getting back into golf after 12 years off. Still using my old mizuno standard irons but after doing some research on this one length irons, i realized all this years, i was playing like "one length" because i choke down all the irons to fit my height. Meaning no custom fittings. I think this kind of irons will be helpful in improvements, tempo and building confident. I also come to understand that Cobra actually uses different shafts (Kbs Tour 90, 80 and wedges 110) and altered the iron weights due to making it one length which is amazing. I am considering this set of irons after this crazy pandemic and hope to lower the handicap to single digit would be nice. Only think that needs to learn is probably longer wedges "feel" which is unknown till testing. Would be nice to have standard from wedges to 7i and rest in one length including hybrids. Just my thoughts. Stay safe !

If you had issues with gapping for single length with your 5 and 6i with Sterling - were you able to address that issue with Cobra one length? I assume you had yourself tested. I have an old set of mizuno mp52s . I cut down the 5 and 6 iron to 7iron length. Adjusted the weight with ledtape and checked the loft and lie. Then I bought a cobra one utility 4 iron to make it a full set. I live in Sweden so weather haven’t let me try them out on the course yet, but what I can see so far at the range with a Trackman is that it actually (!) works. I’m looking forward to try it on the course. Mostly a fun thing to do and let’s face it , I could really need some help with my long irons. Btw, I hit my irons quite high and the ballflight with the 5iron seems to be functional.

i just ordered the forged tec one. arthritis in thumb. basically wanted lighter heads so i can play 1 inch extended and not too heavy swing weight. almost impossible to get normal set d1 - d2 with 1/2 extended without adding weight to butt end. plan is to split into 2 diff lengths. 8 iron length 8-sw and likely normal through 5-7. these come in sw c9 with graphite. allows for so much tinkering for 6'3" short armed old man....:)

I am a high handicap golfer that does not practice enough. I have been playing the Sterling Irons for about 5 months and WOW is all I can say. They have turned the weakest part of my game into the strongest. If I can get my short game back in shape I will be shooting the lowest scores of my life. I play the 4-SW and love them all. I am thinking of replacing the 4 iron with something else.....but I do love it off the tee... especially on windy days. I play short woods as well, 44" 9.5* driver, 42" 17.5* 5 wood and 41" 20.5* 7 wood. I knock the 5 wood 240 and 7 wood 220. My driver has average carry of 265 ish. I struggle with consistency so the shorter length has really helped my ball striking. I would encourage all mid to high handicaps to give them a try. Please test the Sterling Irons on TXG!!!

Currently play cobra F8 irons but struggled with the standard length hybrid at fitting so have one length 3 and 4 hybrids that gap in perfectly. 5 iron about 190 - 195 and 4 hybrid 200 - 205, 3 hybrid 215 - 220 ish. Just got fitted for f9 3 wood and driver as was struggling with my F8’s now in a 2 inch shorter shafts for both. much more constant off the tee over all yard on best shots slightly down compared to my F8’s but more consistent numbers at 240 and 270 ish but hitting way more fairways now!

I have one length 3-wedge mine are all 38”. I am 6’2” and I have had five back surgeries on lower back. Thought I would never play again. I tried the 38” shaft one length stiff shaft steel. I am now playing four rounds a week or more. I am very pleased. It has been one season. The last few times out I tried my normal length irons and now I can hit them. Playing with the one length got me back in the game when I never expected to play again. Mine are custom made and are Calloway x knock offs. I could not spend a bunch of money not knowing if it would even let me play. I believe with the bad back not having to bend as far and only one swing and ball position is huge. I will always be thankful for one length. I understand they are not for everyone but they have a place. I don’t think 7 iron length would have gotten me there but mine are five iron length. A 55 year old broken down fat man can get some exercise and be back on the course because of one length. What better witness is there to the value of one length. Thank you for doing a real test. All the other reviews done by other you tube reviewers were not fair because it was not blind like yours and they always choke down to the bottom of the grip on the short irons eliminating the one length plus their minds were made up before they ever swung the club.

Great video, now if you guys want to go off the charts with one video, Ian you should contact Tom Wishon to build you a set of Sterling Single lengths to your specs for a 7 or 8 iron.Tom is a guru at making world class clubs, and ian is a guru at fitting clubs and has a really high golf IQ. I've played mizuno clubs for 20 years, the Sterlings are the purest feeling clubs I have ever hit, they are the real deal. I tried the cobra's single lengths,they are definitely game improvement clubs but the Sterling single lengths are a player's club , smaller head , less offset and best of all each club head weighs the same. Ian I bet if you try these clubs and put the right shaft in these heads you'll be amazed at the yardage gaping control. I have Aerotech 95s in mine , what a match, I've gone from a 10 handicap to a 3.4 in three years, the only thing that has changed is the consistency, one length clubs , one ball position = Lower scores. Hi Kevin, i'm also using Sterling SL for about 6 mos now. I play off an index of 5.2. I am toying with the idea of switching to either EDEL or Cobra Forged - still OL. As someone who has tried Cobra already - how would you compare the feel and gapping of Sterling vs Cobra? TBH, I'm not that happy with the sound of the 7 - 5i of Sterling, although one does get used to it - and it does get the job done. Thanks!

@@per_growth ,Good evening , I really think the Sterling irons are made better and feel better. The sound of the 5, 6 and 7 irons are different from 8, 9, pw, gw and sw because of the use of different metals. What I mean is 5 thru 7 is a harder and multiple metals, 8 thru sw is a softer metal, there not forged but softer for feel so the ball comes of the face solid and not springy for coincident yardage gaping. Took the game up last summer having never swung a club before, I bought f7 one length as my first set of golf clubs as having one swing for every club made sense to me as a complete newbie. I feel very confident with them, but I'm starting to feel I've "outgrown" them as I've got better as I want to be able to play the finesse shots, especially with the higher lofted irons. If/when I move onto variable length clubs I might be tempted to keep the 4/5/6 of the one length in the bag due to how confidence inspiring they are

Would love to see a video with the Forged or Forged TEC irons. I think those would probably fit his game much better than the F9 ONE length irons seeing as he's a low handicap player. I hit my irons pretty consistently up until my 5 iron. So I was seriously considering just ordering Forged TEC ONE length 3-5 irons at +.5" in length to match the length of my 6 iron (length I actually feel most comfortable with iron wise). Anyway, long comment for me to just say I'd love to see a forged or forged tec testing of them haha. Great work fellas! Love all your content!

My wife wanted to really get into golfing 2 years ago after being petty casual about it. Getting her a set of 1 length F7s absolutely changed her game immediately. With no other real change her ball striking and scoring have improved by huge amounts. I've been so impressed that if /when I get a new set of irons there is a 90% chance I'll go to 1 length.

I have played par or under (again with my other comment posts I am a 9-hole guy) with sets of all types - Wilson Blades, MacGregor 1025s, and so on. For 10 years or more, I only play at my Rawls Golf Course. I know every distance and what to hit - theoretically :) . The value of one-length to me is less practice and more play. But if I used variable length clubs tomorrow, I would be just fine. I took out the 5i. I can't hit it to save my life, so I feel great that you guys can't either. I have the Cobra 2017 set. My 3-5 hybrids are Exotics E9 and are cut 1 inch longer than my one-length. It is easy, enjoyable golf especially when my Rogue is working. I could take my one-length PW, 8, 6 or my Cleveland 48 and one-length 9, 7 and not tell a bit of difference in my game. The gap distances do seem messed up. But again, I love golf as you both and everyone else that posts. I play the same course every day, so I know what to hit. I would be confused going somewhere else, so I do not.

I am an avid golfer (mid handicapper-10), transitioning to 'senior' life- have been dealing with some back issues of late, so I tried the one length irons. I totally appreciate the longer length from 7 iron up as I am able to swing with less discomfort and with much more consistency. Far less chunky or thin shots which has led to more confidence as well. I believe the one length irons, even if blended with traditional irons below the 7 iron, should be seriously considered for anyone dealing with back issues!

I'm only half way through the video so it may be addressed later, but I just bought a set of Cobra F7 one length irons. I have never played golf before, outside of a couple times with some walmart clubs over a decade ago. To me, the concept just makes sense. But my comment on this is: I wonder if there is a huge difference between a low handicap golfer (or heck, even a high handicap golfer with a lot of experience) and somebody who "doesn't know any different". More specifically, somebody who has to "get used to" them all being one length may have a tougher time with them than somebody like me. I compare it to a few years ago when I started playing goalie in hockey and I was told to skip the leg pads with all elastic strapping and stick to leather straps. I'm glad I ignored that advice because leather straps are pretty much dead at this point and I'm glad I didn't have to make the transition.

When I returned to the game after a 12yr absence I bought a set of one length (company name 1 iron) After a year playing with them I switched to a regular set as I found that there was almost no gap between my 8 & 9 irons plus the gaps between 3, 4 & 5 were only 6yds Before switching back to regular irons I removed the 8 & 4 irons from my bag and replaced with hybrid & 64 deg I reckon they helped me at the beginning as one stance, one ball position was a few things that I didn't have to worry about. The wedges were better than regular as they had so much more height and stopped quicker regardless of the ball used.

Great vid! For me, one length has helped both in accuracy but also mentally. I play much better and has lowered my hcp. I play Stering irons in 8 iron length and would never go back to standard length. Knowing you allways need to hit an 8 iron is such a nice feeling. Hey, I know I can hit an 8 iron! They work great and the gaping is like my old Mizuno mp 53. In our club, several better players play one length and are very satisfied. You do, however, need to hit som balls before the "odd" feeling goes away and it feels natural. Do the test with the forged and make them work for Matt...maybe let him se the pic as with other clubs... :) Also, do a blind test with a similar club as this test with normal length clubs and see the gaping... :) Keep it up! Both would really be interesting to see as it's the slower club speed players with problems hitting long irons who are targeted for this as Matt has no issues with long irons. I have normal set except for the kids club 4 rescue, I love it! 18 HCP -Consistency with the 4 is amazing 180m to 185 m on the fly, straight and online, it’s crazy. Not mad about the full concept, would be ok if under 7 were normal length. Now we see how good Ian is? cant wait to see you weave your magic on the set to make Matt a convert, game on.

The strange ting I found after playing with the One Forged for a few rounds, was how easy it was to hit my regular length 5,4,3 irons afterwards. I considered buying a set purely for practice

I'm not really enjoying my 4 and 5 irons, my 6-iron is good enough for around 190. So what to hit between 190 and 250 (3 wood). I'm going to check out regular and 1-length hybrids.

I'm a 12, probably be a 9 if I could make a putt. Been playing OL for about 6 months. Can't believe they're not more popular. 4, 5, 6 irons are so much easier to hit, be it mental or physical or both. On tight holes I'll slap my 4 iron 220 down the middle no problem. Rarely off the fairway. Could never do that consistently with VL 4 iron. Hooks, fats, thins, you name it.

One length was the best decision I've made. The #1 improvement is confidence!!! I have always had that slight doubt in the dark recesses of my mind whenever I need to hit a solid 4i and even 5i sometimes. That is completely gone. I know I can hit a good 4i and 5i and even with a little draw. One thing I will say, it takes some time. If you're not willing to hit the range and get used to the one length, you may struggle a while. I'm not like some where they can't wrap their heads around ball position with longer or shorter clubs. I loved the idea and had no preconceptions that I "need" a certain look when i address the ball. My striking is better, consistancy is better and more importantly, i have more fun playing again. Also, it doesn't bother me to jump from my one length hybrid to the 3 wood. I love my 3 wood!!!

Thanks Gents. Love the video. Switched to The F9 one length last year. Wedge play improved over time and I actually now prefer the longer wedges. They really sky when you lay into them which I love. However I do struggle more with the 4 hybrid, 5 & 6 iron. They fly a little lower than my variable lengths did and don’t go as far. I also don’t like the face angles of those irons. I’m thinking I may need to get those adjusted somehow. maybe add a half inch of length? I still think there’s improvements to be made & hopefully this will get worked out. But overall the concept works for me and has kept my game more overall more consistent. I’ve been playing about 3 years and although I get to the range 1-2 times per week, I only play about once a month or so. I’m around a 15 handicap.

They work well after alot of lie angle and loft adjustments.. me 3 degrees down..and 2 degrees open..the main advantage on shorter irons is the same club for a red or blue pin into the green

I've been waiting for this one. I played one length for 3 years before switching back to traditional last year. The 3-4-5 and GW-SW-LW were the hard ones to gap. Now that OL hybrids are out its made me think about going back.

Great channel and content guys! I switched to Cobra Ones about 2 years ago. I'm about an 8 handicap, and while I am striking the short and mid irons solidly (G-7), I struggle to get reasonable distance with the longer irons. This may be a swing speed issue, but I do feel like I need to swing the 5 and 4 irons much harder to get the ball airborne - they are shorter distance for me than standard clubs as well. I feel like I will switch back to variable length irons next season, because I really didn't see a great benefit in the concept of one length.

So I love the one length irons in the 5,6 iron at 37 inches. Love them not really crazy about 9 iron thru gw at 37 inches. I am only 5’5”. Really thinking about making 7,8 8 iron length and 9,pw,gw to 9 iron length. I am a 6 handicap and have never really struggled with the shorter clubs. Playing 5 iron at 37 inches I am hitting it 180yds which is 10 yards longer then a normal 5 iron.

I have a set where I shortened the long irons to the longest club I hit with confidence. So my 4 and 5 are the same as my 6 iron with lie and swing weight matched as well. In my opinion, it makes a huge difference. I know I can hit these clubs when I stand over them. In fact my 5 iron becomes my favorite. Having played like that for a few years now, I think there is merit in a staggered approach, rather than a one length approach. I am thinking of making my short irons the same length as my wedges. Similarly, if I had more than one hybrid or wood, making them the same length. The fact is, very few people swing the same way Bryson does on a single plane. Most of us need to adjust to the shot at hand. Wedges and short irons are similar but long irons are more sweeping, as is hybrids and woods. I did not check but is Bryson's driver the same length as his irons?

Love your content, think you missed the mark on this one. Specifically when you were discussing the transition from hybrid to 3 wood between holes is a ridiculous criticism. You go from hitting a wedge into a green, putting, and picking up your driver over 10 times a round. There is no reason to say the transition would be any different. I know gapping has been an issue with one length, so a better video would explore why this is a problem specifically for one length, and you could even provide a solution, or tweak the pre-built set to give better numbers. I'm sure you guys could figure it out with all of the resources you have in your shop. Are there specific numbers you want to hit with each club, flight characteristics etc? Ultimately, what would one-length need to do to justify itself to you? Replicate your current numbers?

I’m actually lucky enough to live in Fresno, California where Bryson Dechambeau‘ coach is located. His name is Mike Schy and Bryson and him created Bryson’s first one length set, (they were Nike irons). He has been giving me lessons now for about 6 months and he fitted me for one lengths. Mike says the fitting is the key for the one lengths, but I do not know the differences because I’ve never fitted anyone before. I love mine. I love the concept of stepping over the ball and knowing I don’t have to change anything if I don’t want to. I change my ball position, (ie closer to my left foot with 5 and 6 iron and so forth), it helps get the ball flight up with those clubs and hitting my distances is easier to me. I use the forged tour one lengths, 5-GW, at +.5inch in length so they are six iron length, 37.5. I understand where Matty is coming from with being uncomfortable with the 5 iron, because I was too, but after some time you realize that it’s only 1 inch shorter, or .5 inch shorter for me because I got them made .5 inch longer than standard.

I would also like see you test the wishon sterling irons. They use different metals for higher to lower lofts. This helps the gapping in my mind. Wishon also goes down to a 4 iron. Kourt mentioned “pause for thought.” I figure if a player of his caliber can shave up to 5 strokes off his handicap, that puts the ‘one length” club at the forefront of any golfers mind who is struggling with ‘normal’ length clubs. Interesting comments regarding improvements in wedge play. I’m prepared to try say Cobra Forge Tec One Length irons as a comparison to my current CBack irons & forged wedges. Interested in how they perform when Matty has a fitting session with Ian tweaking some or all clubs as necessary.

I've watched a lot of reviews on one length clubs. A common thread in them all is the mental adjustment to knowing you have a 5 iron in your hand, seeing the angle of the club and being mind humped by the length of the club not matching our preconceived expectations. To me, this isn't a con against the club. I could see a new golfer or a high handicapped player finding value in the simplicity. With that said, the gap in distance between clubs could prove cumbersome. But I honestly think from a new golfer perspective that is an easier problem to overcome than adjusting to club lengths throughout your bag. I'm going to try a used set now that these are coming around the second hand markets.

Here is a radical idea: built my own set but at 5-iron length. But use normal length wedges. Works. Would eliminate his uncomfortable feeling hitting a shorter 5 iron. Longer lengths on 8-6 irons actually welcomed! 9 goes high. Thinking about switching to nl length 9 iron as well.

Ive played about 20 rounds so far, the wedges off the tee feel good to hit but closer to hole I find my self choking up to get more control of club. Consistency of striking increased throughout all irons but I think my game has progressed enough to get standard length now

Obviously this is just a test and you can't do all that is truly necessary but most of your concerns are unfounded on the golf course. I personally became incredibly intrigued by one length just b/c, unfortunately, I think a bit like Bryson and the less variables (i.e. ball position and setup) the more consistent I could play, theoretically. And that theory was confirmed for me when I went and got fitted myself and wanted to give one lengths a try. These clubs have helped me shave stroked off my handicap as I've gone from a 14 to a 9 in the 18 months I've had them. There's a feel for the game that most of us have, right? Matt knows when he's struggling with a club or when he made a bad swing or whatever and most of us are similar. I knew that I just couldn't hit a long iron, it felt comical swinging a club that long with that small of a head and flat of a face. So while I admit there are slight gapping issues (as you all saw) they pale in comparison to the inconsistency issues I faced. I see a bit of the same thing a lot too, as I tend to hook the lower lofted irons more than the higher lofted ones but this is actually no different than the issues I had with regular length clubs, in fact it's gotten better. It's also not even remotely difficult to switch to a wood or driver that is 6-8 inches longer. I know it may seem that way but it's not. I mean, is it hard for you to hit driver then PW? B/c that's a greater difference with variable length, right? One length is a concept that would work for anyone imo. I'm not saying everyone, just anyone. Any skill level. It's certainly not something that's just for beginners (which would prob make golf harder over time if you tried putting them in variable length) but it's something that can add consistency to your iron play and get you focused on other aspects of the game rather than setting yourself up correctly for every shot.

Great video, as always. My big picture takeaway from this is that, the one length clubs do what they are intended to do, which is allow the golfer to replicate the same swing and, depending on skill level of course, get consistent numbers path/face wise through the whole bag. BUT, that might not exactly benefit a golfer as much as it sounds, especially when you actually start to throw it within the context of a full round where your priority should be scoring by any means necessary, rather than focusing on making the same swing from the first tee to the 18th (hopefully) fairway.

when i tested i liked everything except the 5i. my takeaway was the same as matt’s. i just couldn’t get comfortable with so little loft at such a short length. i would be curious to see matt do this with forged tec black. something less gi, but still one length.

I didn’t try the irons but I did take the 3h hybrid out for a round. I could not launch the ball high. They were all line drives like a 2 iron stinger. With the shorter length I think you need to generate good amount of speed to get the ball airborne.
