This was before I owned him, but once they were able to walk and stuff, Auggie (my rabbit) would attack his siblings. We still tried bonding him with another rabbit, again to no avail. I hate when people tell me that I didn't try hard enough, because I seriously always will worry that I didn't. But, we as rabbit owners who watch channels like these are usually the most educated of the community, and I feel that I tried my absolute hardest. Yeah, I really didn't like this, and I used to view people with single rabbits as bad. I don't see that anymore and I'm glad I'm out of it. Rabbits can be just as happy without a companion, and what happens if your rabbit is disabled and can't be with another rabbit? Or is so aggressive they can't bond with another rabbit? I think not having the budget for 2 is a valid reason for having a single rabbit. I think this video is very opinionated and its like "its my way or the highway" lol. It was fine for 3 months. Then overnight Angel killed Sunny and I came out in the morning to find fur blown all across the yard. Yes both were neutered. Since then I gave Angel a year, then tried to find her a rabbit she could bond with. Yes i did use neutered males for her to bond with, seeing as clearly she can't handle other girls. Yes I did introduce slowly, by slowly bringing cages closer until months later finally introducing them in person under supervision for a couple hour sessions at a time. Angel always fights the new bunny and draws blood as soon as I look away, she only behaves well when I'm actively watching because she focusses on me, I have to seperate them to prevent Angel killing the new rabbit every time. Some rabbits just are NOT able to bond and trying again and again does more harm than good because of the fighting causing injuries.

Before my Lorelei was first taken home the conditions was to make sure she is the only rabbit because she frequently gets into fights with other bunnies. Sorry, I’m not going to risk her and another rabbit’s life to bond when they have attempted to bond her with several other bunnies. I find the notion that rabbits need companions a load of baloney. For everyone saying that owning only 1 rabbit is “abuse bc it doesn’t provide basic needs”......... basic needs are FOOD WATER SHELTER (and humans and animals sake I’m also going to say EXERCISE ) with out food we would die, with out water we would die, with out shelter we would die (frees to death, over heat to death, carried away by a tornado and die... etc) I understand that it might be “better” for a rabbit to have another rabbit with them BUT saying that it’s ABUSE is extremely wrong. Abuse is neglecting a rabbit and not giving them proper food, water, or love. Abuse is also physical harming or not providing proper living conditions such as wire bottom cages, small cages that pet stores sell as “rabbit” cages. It’s better to have 1 bunny who is very well taken care of , free roams , gets proper food , water, hay supplies, plus a lot of human love (and even love from other pets... my rabbit LOVES my dog and my dog LOVES my rabbit ..they are always supervised together) vs having 2 rabbits in a cage together. YOU can tell when your pet is sad or depressed and if they do then that’s when you can try something different like re homing, adopting another bun, or another solution. TRUTH IS only you can tell what’s best for YOUR bun!! And it’s not nice to tell living caring bunny parents that they are abusive when they aren’t at all.

I honestly love most of your videos and will continue to support your content, but this is where we differ. I do believe that if it is possible financially, your rabbit is in the proper condition (healthy and spayed/neutered), and you have educated yourself/confident in the bonding process then they should have a partner. But I do not believe it is abusive to only have one rabbit, though something may be lacking I believe a rabbit can have a full and happy life on their own. I also don’t agree with your idea that two rabbits is basically like having one, it’s not. You are now paying double in yearly medical bills, vegetables, treats, enclosure size and enrichment. This doesn’t include senior care as they get older or emergency care which I hate to say it is more of an inevitability than a chance. I personally work in the veterinary community and have two rabbits, I personally can’t afford another rabbit and my two that I rescued do not get along. I wish I had the time, money, and space to allow them both buddies but I don’t but I’m 100% sure they prefer living with me by themselves than, where they were. And I would rather have a single rabbit adopted out to good families and be well taken care of than in a shelter environment. And pretty sure you do to, but I suggest you rethink the tone and words you use when approaching this subject because you may cause a rabbit to lose a forever home.

Rabbit 101, Your videos typically are informative and I enjoy them, but I have to say that this video seems less informative and more condescending and elitist. It’s enough to state the reasons why rabbits should be bonded and share your experiences and allow this to persuade/inform a person’s decision. However, you chose to tell someone they should work more, pick up a few extra hours, better manage their money or don’t get one is short-sighted and offensive. And you laughed with dismal at those whom may not be able to afford spaying/neutering. Although, there are low and no cost options in some communities. Poverty is real, and there are working poor in this country holding down two or more jobs while taking care of their families or going to school. I agree, if you have a pet you should be a responsible pet owner, which means able to manage and afford its care, but wild rabbits don’t have doll houses, pens, designer beds and they all don’t eat organic foods. They live in the wild and they survive off a lot less then what we Americans indulge our pets. Its okay for a person to work there way up to be able to have two or more. To say it plainly, you exhibited disdain for those who have less then you. With indignation you raised you nose up to the poor or those with less and balked at them for wanting a rabbit and maybe not being able to afford a second. In turn you’ve treated your rabbits with more compassion and understanding then the people you ridicule here.
@mojothebudgies29013 жыл бұрын
If too poor to look after an animal properly you need to find a solution. I see it all the time where people harp on can't afford a suitable enclosure for example In that case you need to consider rehoming them if no way of affording what they need.

Quick tip: DONT get a pair of baby (I.e., unfixed) rabbits and assume they’ll be bonded when they grow up. It doesn’t matter if they’re siblings. It doesn’t matter if they’re very attached to each other right now. Keep unfixed rabbits separated until they’re fixed. If you’re in this situation, fellow commenter, separate your rabbits and get that spay/neuter appointment on the calendar. Now: I can already see a lot of pushback from experienced owners to some of your points, but if I can add anything, I think the advice you’re giving sounds great for beginning owners, even though experienced owners have managed to do things like cat/dog/rabbit coexistence (not sure about full bonding) and the fact that some rabbits really do better alone. But saying that, I’m not really helping the issue of most rabbits needing a partner in most homes, especially for beginner owners. So to my fellow rabbit experts, chillax. This is fine content for newbies.

They're not a different species, they can still inter bread, and have the same genetic makeup. They just have more coat colours as of lack of predators. I was saying it was abusive for humans to do that to a child at least in my country. I don’t think keeping a rabbit single is abusive, but I do think most people don’t realize how important having a friend is. I do recognize there are certain situations when people can’t provide a friend, or can’t at the moment. All of which I went over in my video. :)

Actually I think there's no problem in having only one rabbit if you actually invest it the adecuate time on them, of course if you are out most of the day or your just don't play with them enough you MUST give them company.
@OLGA-io1kp5 жыл бұрын
@takeit they do not need to be accompanied 24/7 it's really not obligatory, and the thought of getting an extra rabbit to make yours have company it's problematic, it's like getting a pet for your pet, it's not ok, it's double the work, double the expenses, double care, and double suffering when they die. Rabbits do well by themselves unlike sugars who actually die from loneliness and it's an obligation to have at least three of them.

@@OLGA-io1kp So I'm very late but I hope you see this. Ehm in my country you need to have at least two, otherwise it is considered animal cruelty. So I don't think they force even people who want to butcher their rabbits to have them in groups out of stupidity. Lonely rabbits tend to show more agression and become more depressed than bonded ones and is said they can feel being lonely without expressing it (as they can hide pain as well). I would not tell somebody you are an abuser because you keep rabbits alone, but I would strongly advise to change that. You would literlly get scolled be your vet here if they knew you have rabbits alone. If all bonding attempts fail it is advised to keep them apart, but still that is better than not not have another rabbit at all. Imagine living your whole life not able to have someone who can understand you. They have their own language that no other animal can understand, also no human. Rabbits spend more than 50% of their day with social interaction between each other. If they sleep they have someone who warns them from danger (Obviously not there when you keep them inside, but the instincts of being a prey animal are still there)

@@beab-locher6077 in your country it may be obligatory but i dont think its a rule in most countries, I am actually studying veterinary medicine (i have only 1.5 years left of 5 years) and I would advice to have more rabbits if u can afford taking care of them, on the other hand like u said, if someone is playing a lot and taking care of their rabbit i see no problem having only one, i had a rabbit for 8 years who was really bonded to me and never had an agression problem, but every rabbit is different, i understand your point and do agree to an extent is better to have company for your pets of the same species if they are gregary or social species😁

@@OLGA-io1kp And if you talked with collegues from my country they would tell otherwise. Switzerland has the best or one of one of the best animal protective laws. And it is illegal to keep one only. Do you see my point? Like rabbits who will be buchtered (poor little babies) are required not to live alone. Noone responsible sells you a rabbit if you plan to keep him/her alone here. So I absolutelty have this perspective. Swiss are generally perceived as boring and very fussy people, so are our laws. And in this paritcular point I am very glad for. I don't want to condem people who have/had one rabbit, but not to spread further the perception "they are perfectly happy alone". First of I never heard one of my rabbit telling me "hey I am happy" So I don't know for sure. (Yes for sure they have body language, but rabbits can even hide pain, so why not lonliness?) If you are interested I can send you a link with our laws, they are very partcicular and specific what which animal requires as bare minimum. Manx animals you can have in other country you can only have if you work professionally with animals and / or passed a workshop and got a certificate. Some years ago it was obligatory to do that for a dod. They withdrew from that now. Yes at this point my country is nitpicking. (A good nitpicking)

I got my rabbit from my teacher because she accepted a rabbit as a gift from my other classmate(I don’t know why either). Anyway my teacher is from China and she lives at my aunt and uncle’s house because they provide housing for teachers and students from China so she was like an aunt to me. I really liked her new baby bunny (Tutu) and my teacher was going to China for the summer so she let me take care of her. She kept her in a tiny little bird cage so shortly after I got her we moved her to a new cage and eventually she spent most of her time free roaming. When the summer came to an end I really wanted a bunny of my own and my parents thought I was responsible enough to have one but my teacher heard that I wanted a bunny so she said I could keep Tutu. I was so happy to have her but I wish I had known more about rabbits before I got her. She is fully free roamed now and I now know how to take care of her. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to get her a companion soon but my parents also didn’t realize how hard it can be to keep a bunny and probably don’t want to get another one.

Honestly, sometimes it’s just practice. I rescued three bunnies who came from bad situations, and fostered two, and kept one. Two were very much neglected, and one just didn’t get along with his owner. Rocky (didn’t get along with his owner), was bad with other bunnies, because he was stressed at my house. As his care got better, he was much better at bonding. He actually got along well with even the most aggressive of rabbits. Storm didn’t get along with his brothers, but I haven’t tried to bond him with anyone else. Lightning I had to do the most work with. He wouldn’t eat in front of me, he was so scared of me and his new situation, that he refused to come out of his hidey house to eat. The first time he was in a bonding session, he immediately attacked. The second time, he waited until the bunny got too close, then attacked. The third time, he was uncomfortable, and aggressive, but never attacked. He did better and better each time, so just keep trying, maybe your bunny is stressed in his home life, or territorial at home. Maybe he just needs practice, but just keep trying, don’t give up on your little guy.

I normally love watching your videos but I 100% disagree with you on this topic. Yes, most rabbits would be happy with another rabbit but it’s not 100% necessary. In fact some bunnies would prefer to not have another bunny with them... just like in the wild, you will very occasionally find some rabbits on their own and surviving and thriving perfectly fine that way. I’ve tried to bond my bunny with over 5 different individual rabbits and none have been the least bit successful. He violently attacks them, grunts, thumps, ect. He’s gone so far as to severely injure another rabbit. Yes, he is neutered. He doesn’t have aggressive tendencies towards me or any other kind of animal other then rabbits. He LOVES cuddling and playing with my dogs and my friend’s guinea pigs. But anytime I’ve ever tried to have a play date or a binding session with any other rabbit, he goes absolutely nuts and actually had hurt himself in the process of attacking the other bunny. So for you to say that not getting another rabbit makes you an abusive owner then that’s something that honestly is very offensive and I cannot believe you would go so far as to even say that.

I’m not against finding her a friend as time goes by and if the rescue thinks they have a good match for her, but she wasn’t a rabbit who didn’t like “1 or 2” rabbits. She was in several foster homes and even since being with me in a house without other rabbits or other rabbit smells, she’s become a completely different and way more comfortable bunny. I agree with 90% of what you said, but my situation (and I’m sure other people as well) has more complicated reasons for rabbits being alone than what’s presented here. I agree that many things can be excuses, but this video really frustrated me.

I LOVE 101 rabbits, I have learned most of my rabbit care from this youtube page, I also have two bunnies already and would love more in the future bc I do think they really do benefit from friends, BUT this video is cringy. Legitimately the first video I’ve ever had any type of issue with at all. It’s comes off as super entitled and even a bit immature when the money part was brought up. “Work harder, pick up extra shifts...so on & so on.” 🤦🏻♀️ It’s clear money struggles have never been an issue for her and she’s choosing to be ignorant about that whole issue. That just made me sad to here her judgement about it. It is important to save up and be prepared to properly take care of your bunnies basic needs, that’s not the point I’m making.

I don't know what to say but........ According to me, rabbit need proper attention and I don't think that humans can give proper attention to bunnies as bunnies give each other. Humans have other work also rather than only taking care of rabbits. So it's much better if a rabbit get 24/7 friend. The bunnies will be busy as well as the owner will be not tensed.😊😊 I expressed my views actually...... I don't know what others think.

I did a lot of research before getting a rabbit and I understood they needed a friend, I was in the middle of looking for one from a shelter however, one day me and my dad and some others had went to the pet store and I saw my current rabbit, Jackson, he had been in a small cage and listed as a surrender, the store only wanted to sell him with the cage and I just wasn't leaving until I'd had him so we compromised and I got him out of that situation. He's currently alone, I'd been meaning to get him neutered and he's finally able to this December, in the meantime he's been a lone bunny - from my expirience he still is thriving without a partner meaning he may just not want one, I am still going to give him the opportunity after he's healed however if he doesn't want a friend after a bunch of bondings I will not put that stress on him and will allow him to stay alone.

I'd say 99% of bunnies need a friend. There are the odd ones like I had a budgie (very social usual) who did not react well to friends in her enclosure (binge eating etc). She was one of the 1%. She preferred outside friends (canary watching.)

I completely agree. People often say that their Bunny is perfectly happy alone, but if you've ever seen two bonded Rabbits cuddle, groom each other and look out for one another, you would probably realise that they are way happier with a partner. Rabbits can be picky, so don't give up if they don't like the Bunny you got them as a companion. Intoduce them in an area they both don't know, and don't seperate them too quickly! They probably will fight, chase each other and may even inflict mild injuries on each other. You should only seperate them when a) The Rabbits constantly chase each other without stopping to eat/sleep/rest, as long as they pause the chasing once in a while they're fine! b) One or Both Rabbits stopped eating. Not eating for a while is fine, but if they refuse to eat for longer than 24 hours, they need to be seperated. c) They inflict serious injuries on each other. Ripping out each others fur is normal in bonding, and bites on ears look a lot worse than they actually are, so don't worry too much about that (though if they're bleeding you might want to get them checked at a Vet) For the bonding you should give them an area of about 40 square feet (4 square meters) so that they can avoid each other. Only give them houses with two entrances or one could get trapped. Make sure to give them their food in different bowls, or else they might fight for it. The most common mistakes people make is to seperate the Rabbits too quickly and to give up after 2 or 3 failed bonding attempts. Rabbits are like Humans, they don't get along with everyone! I hope this helped some people who want to bond their bunny, and if you have only one, please consider trying to give them a companion!

Also if you have to choose the gender, I recommend a female and a fixed male. Two females and two males do sometimes work, but a female and a male are often the most compatible.

I got my first rabbit ((7?) older male Rex) as a rehome and shortly thereafter I got him neutered and got a second one ((3?)younger female, spayed, mini lop) from the Humane Society for this reason. I bonded them and they free roam, mostly in their room during the day (don’t trust the dogs when I’m not home) but I don’t see them cuddling together all the time. They flop and groom in front of each other and they eat from same and each other’s bowl and mostly go in the same litter box even though they have 2. Also if they are in a new/stressful situation they will huddle together. When I’m with them they’ll run up to me and put their heads together/groom a bit but then they go their separate way. Is this normal? I would have thought they would be more “lovey” to each other. Is almost like they tolerate each other (like roommates). I would love to see them cuddling together all the time.
@celinef.9075 жыл бұрын
I'm a rather new bunny owner myself but I actually think that's normal x3 I don't know how long you have them for already, maybe they just need a bit more time Other than that, they might just be friends but not in love with each other x3 I mean, you wouldn't automatically fall in love with every person that's around you for longer either :3 So they might just be regular friends x3
@101rabbits5 жыл бұрын
How long have they been bonded for? Sometimes it can take up to a year for them to be very close. Also, some bunnies only show this behavior when humans aren’t around. Mocha and Lulu would cuddle and groom each other most when they were in they hidey house hiding.

@@101rabbits Hi! thanks for your reply! I've had Hershey (the Rex) for 3 months and Oreo (the mini lop) for 2 months. in addition to their 2 covered litter boxes they have a covered digging box and 2 more hiddey houses, but imho they would have a hard time both fitting in them at the same time. Hershey is 5lb and Oreao is 6.5lb. Should i make a hidey house big enough for both?

I don’t have a room for my bunny. He lives in a large two story hutch but I don’t have the luxury of giving him an entire room. I let him out to run around all the time but when I’m not home or I’m sleeping he stays in his cage. How am I supposed to keep two bunnies in the same hutch?
@missnicolearie92665 жыл бұрын
Hannah Berensen your first bunny really shouldn’t be in a hutch at all. If you have the room for a hutch then you should have room for an NIC condo. Hutches are HORRIBLE for rabbits as there is minimal room, and causes extreme stress. Plz upgrade and maybe use the hutch as a little castle for he/she to play in during play time! :)

From my experience 2 bunnies from the same litter works out best most of the time. In my opinion is best to get the same sex so you don’t have to separate them while waiting to get them fixed. All of the babies that have been born at my rescue have had a successful bond with a litter mate. This is just my experience.
@101rabbits5 жыл бұрын
I don’t support breeding and strongly recommend adopting from a rescue. As far as littermates go, it doesn’t mean they will or will not bond any better as they have to be separated once they leave their mother until they are spayed and neutered.
