3 suggestions for you for this year. first of all make sure ALL the water lines are covered with the straw enough to keep the sun off of them. the sun hits the hose and will heat the water to an almost scalding point. then when you turn it on to water the plants, the water will scald the roots. secondly, you were watering the plants too hard. the water was beating down the plants. dont use the spray setting. third of all, be careful watering plants during the heat of the day. water getting on the leaves will scorch in the heat. either water early in the morning or late in the evening. late evening will give the plants more time to soak up the water over night before the heat of the day hits.

Many tomato varieties develop fungus blights if foliage stays wet all night. Looks bad, wilts lowest leaves, but doesn't affect production that much?? Wasn't a problem in central Idaho, but is in NW Calif. What about east of the Mississippi, what with all the rain you get? Of course, Late Blight is a destroyer in its own class.

The garden looks great. When I was in NY I had two raised beds. Yours are nicely spaced and high. The water system is the key. Mulch is good to retain moisture. I suggest moving it around occasionally so you don’t get any mold and airing out is good for the soil. Very good outtakes funny.

I would say say the thing that should have been tested it the edges of the metal beds. Of course when you test the very middle of the bed is going to fair better because that area doesn't fluctuate in temperature as badly as the edges. Roots don't want that heat. I've gardened in probably every container and while you CAN grow in metal containers I firmly believe it's a fad/trend just to sell more products. It's definitely astheticallly attractive but functionally they aren't worth it. I love your channel. You guys are great!

I think that mulching is a good solution to keeping planted things better and give them good moisture and that keeps them from drying out and having the sun scold them. Your beds are looking so great that is my goal eventually to get a couple of raised beds. Thanks for sharing this video and all of the suggestions to doing things. I had fun watching this video, and I wish you both a blessed and beautiful rest of your week, sending love and hugs, bye! 🤗👍💜💜💜

Depending on the sturdiness of the bamboo poles you could bend some pvc pipe over the tops of them to make hoops and then sling your shadecloth/insect cloth over them, this may also help to reduce evaporation by providing some shade.

Good day, kids. Nice experiment. You mentioned carrots? Starting carrot seeds should be done in covered soil, like under a plank for a number of days so the seeds can germinate. There are YT channels that show and discuss this. If I recall, I think you covered the paint of the raised bed panels as being a heat reflective type paint when you first assembled the beds. Good job! Waiting for your next video.😊

I have a couple questions. Hope they are not too silly. First question…. Will the straw y’all put down as mulch produce a lot of weed growth? Weeding isn’t a problem for me, but I just wondered. Second question… I am seeing a lot of different viewpoints on how to water your plants. I noticed you watered them directly on the plant. Have you seen any issues after watering that way? I am debating between an irrigation system for my small raised beds or just watering directly. My garden beds are not doing well as I got a late start. But what I did get planted I would like to see it succeed. Love y’all’s channel! Thanks for all the research y’all do for us! God bless! 💜🙏

I, personally, have avoided the type of raised beds you've used. The depth concerned me. I was afraid that gravity would naturally migrate water to the bottom away from roots. Our raised beds are only a few feet deep. We are in the southeastern part of NC, about 2 hours from the ocean. We get intense heat from the sun all the time. Thank you for your video.

Since you've turned the meat thermometer into a dual purpose tool .... There is some interesting research relating soil trmp in raised beds vs flat ground, some ratios correlating bed height to increased winter and spring temps, covrring and mulching....and whst ro i remember, not much: 18" and higher have warmer winter and early spring temps. A covering does wonders and from what i read and also remember, a bed covrring of barn cleanings provide insulation but they also foster soil "critter" (fungi, bacteria,,worms, insects, etc...) activity which can measurably affect winter znd then also early spring temps whether in a raised bed or in-the-ground bed. Dropped and raked fall leaves arent too bad depending upon which they are. To keep leaves in nplace condider burlap, cotton sheeting, window screens, etc...

Liquid, household ammonia is the most readily available form of nitrogen for plants. Consider doing a light spray of NON-SUDDSY ammonia on top of your straw when you put the beds to rest for the winter. It will also help with the heavy wood compost down in the beds too. Consider a 10% to 25% dilution (between 1:10 and 1:4, for us as the eyeball perceives) or, if you wash windows inside or outside in the fall with NON SUDDSY ammonia, begin with that water. If you come through and top dress with leaves, barn cleanings, or a heavier layer of straw then spray closer to the dirt under this thicker kayer kf top dressing. - For years now, ive been able to consistently find unscented, non--suddsy ammonia at the Now $1.25 Store (formerly The Dollar Tree)
