I have a sub 16610V (Kermit) that my parents bought me for graduation around the time you were buying yours. It was my daily driver until Rolex started making the 6 digit subs a few years latter. It was too special, both sentimentally and as a piece of watch history (40th anniversary for the sub) to risk damaging it beyond repair. My Mom is gone now but shortly before she passed she asked me why I didn't wear the Rolex she bought me any more. I explained to her that they don't make it anymore and that it was too sentimental to me. Then I mentioned that it is also the 40th special edition and that's why it has the green bezel. She smiled and said "your father wanted to get the black one" but that she "picked the green" because the green power ranger was my favorite when I was a little boy. She didn't choose that watch because it was special and figured it would be worth more than the other someday, she picked it because it reminded her of something I loved when I was a little boy. As I write this I have to dab the tears away from my eyes recalling that. I've owned many watches, some more expensive, some more rare, some more coveted but none as iconic as my "Kermit" sub.

Marc, you are spot on! These two watches are 100% icons. Most people will recognize the significance, if nothing else, of these pieces. I own 15 watches, 14 automatics and one solar, which include two Omegas (no Speedmasters), and zero Rolexes. The entire collection (as do most probably) ranges from luxury to affordable pieces, including three Islanders. Other than serious watch enthusiasts, NO ONE would consider any of my watches iconic, even my Zenith Chronomaster El Primero A384 Revival which I consider iconic as hell because of the history it represents. I think iconic is overused in watch collecting--Buy what speaks to YOU, not what people say you should buy because it's an "icon".

Interesting; especially the explanation of vertical integration (loved the hat tip to Milton Friedman). I noticed stamped steel clasps on the bracelets. Today we denigrate many Japanese brands for the same bracelet construction. 😊

I think denigrate is a strong word lol but its fair to say that a stamped clasp on a modern production watch is just not aligned with modern standards of watch design and production. I will also note that in my experience as an owner of a sub of a similar vintage equipped with that stamped clasp it is still a better execution than the modern stamped clasps from the brands to which you refer.

Love the neutral perspective you bring. I feel the iconic status of Rolex comes down to masterful marketing. And the sub is by far their most recognizable flagship model, but I do feel that the Rolex we knew has morphed into a brand that appeals to a more superficial demographic, models are bigger, flashier, polished. And I don’t think I want to walk into a dealer and be treated like a second class citizen or be convinced that they’re doing me a favor allowing me to be be part of a waitlist for a novelty that I’m willing to invest a few thousand dollars on. It’s become ridiculous. Love the speedy, I have a blue reduced Schumacher edition. Super fun, but they are threading a fine line of almost overplaying the legendary status with the swatch collabs.

I'd say the Omega Seamaster rather than the Speedmaster

The Seamaster I like less than the Speedmaster. Crazy!
@DavidDatura14 сағат бұрын
I’m a fan of both. But in direct comparison the Omega looks a bit cheap next to the Rolex here. And I’ve traditionally been more of an Omega fanboy than a Rolex one. And this is one of the earlier Sub’s too, that doesn’t have the sheer build quality of the newer ceramic bezeled versions. Oh, the Omega is the reduced! I knew something looked off, the sub-dials look way too far apart. Where they’re more bunched together on the actual Moonwatch…phew 😅

No debate about these being icons...but do you think they still are worth going out and buying now? Seems like there are so many watch brands these days
@islandwatch14 сағат бұрын
They are worth what people think they are worth, and the majority of people still admire these. So, to answer your question, yes. However, for me, if I did it over again, would I have these? Not sure.

The Rolex looks way too plain next to the Omega; people are dumb.

Both watch brands make YOU the consumer pay for their advertising. So the watches cost way more than they actually are worth.

Good point.

If Omega put a Tfit on the fly adjustment omega would have more customers spending $6000 plus on a watch is not worth it. Grand Seiko needs it as well 😊

How ironic that the Omega can withstand massive G forces, micro gravity, and the extreme temperature differential of the lunar surface, but one Long Island dog bite and it’s in pieces.

Got rid of the two Rolex watches I had. Hate the brand. Never buy them again. Too many good watches in the world to play their games.

Everytime I mention I like watches,almost without exception, i will inevitably get asked ( especially women) if I have a rolex! ( I dont)- so there's no question to me they have a tremendous brand recognition. Personally i dont like them partially because of way they treat customers but mainly because i just find them boring...however Their value retention also cant be questioned! . On the other hand every vague " watch person" knows the the speed master & , especially of a certain age eg alivecduring space race...probably wants one ( also me 😀)

Darn women, LOL. My wife will look at one of my Orients and say "looks like your Rolex", LOL

I have an Omega Speedmaster 38mm Orbis and like it because it looks great on my 6.5" wrist and has a distinct colour scheme compared to the traditional black dial with white indices. Mine doesn't have any alignment defects. The Yacht Master is a great watch. However, my choice of Rolex would be the Milgauss, rather than the Submariner or the Yacht Master. The Milgauss is so unique with its second hand. I don't own any Rolex watches and probably never will, due to the cost and waiting lists. You got nice ones, so I'm happy for you. I would consider the Tudor Black Bay watches, since they are similar to Rolex (owned by the same company) yet more affordable and attainable.

There are a lot of great watches out there, and even more than the price I feel like I wouldn't want a Rolex because it's the one "fancy watch" that all non-watch people know the name of. There's a fine line between being an "icon" and being basic.
@islandwatch14 сағат бұрын
True, I get that.

As a communications professional, I'm not surprised in any way regarding the success Rolex has enjoyed in respect to advertising investment vs ROI. That being said, being tasked with heading a new Rolex ad campaign that showcases a genuinely new design would be akin to being handed the keys to an Aston Martin. Jumping at the opportunity is an understatement.

Rolexes are ridiculously overprice for what they are. Paying purely for status. I’ve the same Rolex without solid end links that is the last quintessential Rolex Submariner.

I've heard great things about owning a Speedmaster Reduced, but also bad things about getting a Reduced serviced. Word on the street is that it can be particularly expensive since the movement's modular setup requires more work, and I've also seen comments about how some local (respected) watch repair businesses won't service them for that very reason. Have you had any kind of experience like this? A standard Speedy is out of my price range, but the Reduced models (as you mention) are generally plentiful for under $3.5k, but I'm wary of spending that kind of money if it's going to cost me another grand (plus shipping) to get it serviced.
@TheTejanoJose12 сағат бұрын
Omega charges you $900 for serving a mechanical chronograph. These are not cheap watches.
@islandwatch8 сағат бұрын
last time it was serviced was at Omega. So, I'm not sure. I guess I'll update later!
@azdbuk17 сағат бұрын
I cannot get past the plexiglass. The Rolex looks so much better in quality next to the Speedy. Regardless of my financial situation, I would never spend thousands on either. Never. $8k for a plastic crystal Speedy? Give me an Islander, an Alpinist, a Casio world timer, a monster for $1500 or so, and for my luxury splurge, maybe a Ball Roadmaster for $2500 on sale. And the other 4k+tax Ill use for a December in Mexico or Belize. Or drop the Ball, scour cheap tickets and just travel for an entire season.
@islandwatch14 сағат бұрын
Love to hear you'd rather have an Islander :)
@azdbuk9 сағат бұрын
@@islandwatch Literally would, been saying for 3 years my ice blue waffle dial is my favorite watch. My Alpinist is my favorite classic watch. I value "value" over prestige. That is why I say, give me Islander, Seiko etc....and 6 mos of travel money over a Speedy, any day.
