Are there any downsides to using "flat bottom" sharpening on these kinds of runners and steel? I'm a big fan of the flat bottom sharpening and edges. Wondering if I make a switch to these, if I should continue the flat bottom edges, or what kind of additional changes I might experience.

I almost got into a fight with one of the guys sharpening skates at my local shop who had never seen black steel in his life before, but who insisted on stone honing every blade. I finally had to remind him that I was the customer and I wanted him to sharpen my skates the way I wanted them. Now more of their customers have come in with black blades (and the manager admitted that they have gotten reamed out by customers for honing them) so they‘ve familiarized themselves with how to properly handle them.

I just bought a pair of AS3 Pro's and went to get them baked and sharpened at my local hockey rink. When I got them back the black on the blades was all scratched off. I was told by the person that the black coating on the steel was a gimmick and he needed to use the honing stone to get rid of the burrs. I know the CCM black blades are not "true" black steel, but that should not have happened, right?

Seems advice has changed a bit on honing Black Step Steel. Now there is a clay/rubber "stone" that can be used but according to a reliable source it is OK to hone black step with a high quality Arkansas stone and oil. I have spoken to Step Steel directly and they suggest not doing anything more than a leather strop but as pointed out they are conservative and want to protect their blades. For those that are in the business of sharpening the blade finish has been improved by using Arkansas stones and oil. Do you have any knowledge of this or opinion?....keep up the good work!

Late to this party, but just wanted to say I’m not a fan of sharpening black steel. We use the 2nd hardest wheel bladeMaster makes and it is still a pain in the ass to get an edge on it. As far as deburring we use a rubber block from Howies hockey.

Hi. In our shop we regularly watch your videos and it’s amazing. I have question about Bauer runners LightSpeed 5. We have blademaster machine for sharpening and also we sell Step Steel runners. So my question: do you think, that LS5 is really Carbon blades, as they claim? Because Step Black Steel are much better and harder than LS5. For example - customer with Blacksteel come to sharp once every 2-3 weeks, with LS5 - every week once. Thanks for your answer and keep going with your amazing job.
@msl170
@msl170 5 жыл бұрын
Pro Hokejisty the LS5 steel is a not as good quality as true DLC coated steel. They are carbon coated tho. Step steel (regardless of V-Steel, Blacksteel or regular) is higher quality than LS5. Bauer created the LS5 with a coating over top of a stainless steel blade, which is generally super soft. When sharpening those blades, you’ll notice that too. The coating for LS5 Is just to keep the edges sharp but by having a softer steel, you’ll have to sharpen it more often than Others. LS4, based off of hardness, are better steel than LS5.

Do the dyed steel have the DLC coating? Just from the video is sounded like maybe only the Black Steel ones have the DLC coating. Thanks in advanced and keep up the good work you rock!! Also where could/should I buy a leather hone to let my pro shop borrow it for my skates?

I deal with PVD coatings and DLC quite often in my line of work and I'll tell you that if a ceramic stone is removing the DLC coating, then that is not a true DLC and might just be a marketing gimmick for "painted blades". At near diamond hardness with some coatings over 5000 vickers there is no way that is coming off through simple hand polishing with a ceramic stone. We have put these coatings into aluminum oxide grit blasters using 54 grit and it sometimes takes minutes to remove the DLC from the metal substrate. The takeaway from this would be that some of these companies might advertise DLC, but it's really just a baked on coating like powder coat.

I have tuuk super stainless-steel (stock s160 blades) right now and kinda want to get some step steel blades, but I’m afraid of how much higher the step steel blades are, and how my skating will be. I’m afraid my skating will be worse if I get such a taller blade. Should I get step steel or get ls2 blades to match the height of what I already have. Please help

Higher steel gives better turning since you can lean more without bottoming out. Also more steel means longer life. The profile is more important than the height

An update on my question: #ccmhockeyrussia has answered me. I can use this edge correction tool but slide it very careful without much pressure. Otherwise too much of this steel surface can be damaged.

I guess you really shouldn't use a Y-stick with DLC blades because they are resharpening by bringing the edges closer = removing the coating?
@not-AI
@not-AI 5 жыл бұрын
Markus Suomela I was thinking the same thing however it would depend on how high the ceramic goes up the side of the steel. You should just leather hone them and wait till they need to be sharpened again if you're not brave enough to try lol

Is there any scientific evidence or actual tests that show that one steel is better than other steel in any way?
@Anderin55
@Anderin55 2 жыл бұрын
.....So it seems like most people didn't notice the black steel's edges feel Much sharper with stone, over a piece of leather. If the black steel is not as sharp when using clay or leather, over a stone, then what is the point??? So preserving a black coating to have a mediocre edge is Better than having a great edge that lasts? Is that what this video is trying to say? All I know is that I stopped using leather, clay and rubber to deburr black steel over a year ago, and my customers are Much happier. They used to complain that their black steel edges didn't last when we used clay, or other rinks that didn't use anything. So I started using a stone again and suddenly people are happy with their black steel.......go figure.

I work in a pro shop and I have sharpened skates for years, you have to stone blade no matter what color, it gives you the edge. If you don’t, you will not have a good as a grip to the ice if you did. I own LS5 blades, black, and I did a test to see if were actually true, but it wasn’t. I had an easier time with stoning the blade, than without. As long as you stone them at a 45 degree angle, and not like the video is doing at 4:46, it won’t effect the steel.
@goprop.o.v4495
@goprop.o.v4495 5 жыл бұрын
Plus, the surface of the steel will come off eventually due to pucks, sticks, and other things rubbing against the blades
@HockeyTutorialOfficial
@HockeyTutorialOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
Not true at all. Blades like Step Steel (V steel, Black Steel etc) or any equivalent do NOT need honing. This information is coming directly from our tests and the people that make these blades. This is exactly why we created this video. Please understand that the manufacturers of these blades/runners will know better than anyone regardless of how long you've been sharpening skates. Equipment evolves.

@msl170
@msl170 5 жыл бұрын
You shouldn’t be stoning a skate at a 45 degree angle. You’ll roll the edge in. You have to lie it flat against the steel. And the LS5 steel is garbage. It’s cheap stainless steel coated so it’s super soft. I’ve done that exact same test with Step Black and the stone doesn’t matter. But seriously, if you’re working in a pro shop and angle your stone, I definitely wouldn’t go to you for sharpenings

Show me the evidence. Saying that black or coloured steel is not a gimmick does not make it fact: it is simply an unverified, unsubstantiated claim. Show me data, evidence to back up your claim. Otherwise it is just blind faith and, son, I ain't the believing type.

A diamond side coating reduces wear. The expired US Patent 5255929 of 1993 covers the claim. Eons ago some makers had Titianium coated skate blades. The two coated vertical walls of the blade are a part of the sharp edge created during skate sharpening. the radius of hollow cuts through the coating of course at the bottom of the blade/runner.

Really you have to learn a bit more about sharpening steel before you post something like this. All steel, regardless of colour quality needs to develop a burr in order to get sharp. The finishing process involves getting rid of this burr to produce a smooth surface with a fine point at the edge. Not honing your steel because you have a "high quality steel" is to say you don't understand this process. Try a search on how to hand sharpen high quality japanese kitchen knives. Same principles apply here, including understanding how "shiny" high polished stainless is actually a lower quality product because of those nasty chromium carbides creating a rough edge. Seriously, learn more about it before you post. The hockey industry needs a spokesperson who educates rather than regurgitates marketing catch-words. You have an opportunity to be that spokesperson if you choose but you're not quite there yet. Just a salesperson at this point.
Now THIS is entertainment! 🤣
