Cuba is now opening up for Americans to travel to. These are the Dos and Don'ts. Cuba has remained a bit of a dead zone to Americans and because of that, there are a lot of misconceptions about the country. / sterlingofla • Traveling to Cuba Cuba is an awesome place full of friendly people but it's still useful to know a few tips before you go. President Obama is now putting in legislation to ease up travel restrictions to Cuba, and before you go there, it's useful to know the do's and don'ts. Even though Cuba just received it's 1st commercial flight from the US, President elect Donald Trump has stated that he will undo President Obama's legislation on Cuba if the Government doesn't "make a better deal with the Cuban people." And also tweeting on the news of Castro.
Now in 2019 things have changed again. It's still a lot easier to go to Cuba than it was before, but there's still a few things to be aware of if you're looking to go in 2019 so above is a link to a 2019 update. Back when we went, there were 2 ways to go there. You could book though an authorized tour group or buy a ticket to a different country with inbound flights, buy a plane ticket to Havana, then just fly over. Now you can buy flights directly from the US to Cuba, but you have to choose between 12 different categories the purpose of your stay.
Staying at Casas have also changed. Instead of just flying in and relying on asking around (easier than it sounds), you can now just book places online to stay. The internet is becoming way more accessible there so now there's also an easier way to chat back and fourth and ask advice from the person you'll be staying with.
This video was out of date just a little while ago bun now since Trump is now changing laws back to the way they were, the video in this video may begin to be relevant again. This is Cuba in 2015.

I was born in Cuba and have lived most of my life in USA. I traveled to Canada often for work, and my Canadian friends enjoyed telling me about their vacations in Cuba and how very much they like Cuba and Cubans. Of course, I loved hearing about their trips. One Canadian friend told me: "Cubans are the poorest happy people in the world!" I too love Canada and my Canadian friends, and especially the famous new and handsome prime minister Trudeau!!!

I just got back from Cuba and this was very accurate. I had to turn off my "this person is trying to scam me" filter, and when I just started talking to people I would normally avoid everywhere else, I was amazed at the genuine friendliness of the country.

@ash - and don't you feel shame that the Cuban civilians is prohibited to buy food in restaurants exclusive for tourists? There are 2 coins currencies in Cuba - one for tourists, and the other one for civilians. There's some kind of apertheid, if you didn't noticed.

It was very strange when I went and people kept stopping me and asking where I am from. As a New Yorker, this at first seemed suspicious to me but I was with a friend who had been there before who informed me that this is just how they are. It was one year ago today that I returned home from Cuba after being there a week with a few schoolmates for a school trip. It was an experience that I'll never forget and that typing it out can't do it justice. It's beyond words. Also, he's write with the do's and don'ts, especially with asking them their opinions on the government. Just be careful though because asking them is one them, but getting them to assemble could get you in trouble. Also, when we went we pretty much got a mojitos with all our lunches and dinners. Waiters came around with bottles or rum to add to the mojitos. They practically give away rum.

I went to Cuba via Mexico for 10 days, I had a blast. Everybody thought I was Canadian. I stayed in the apartments Castro had built for the Pan-American games. $10 a night. Talked politics and everything even un-employment which they could not believe existed. Sucked when I hired some local kids to show me around the beaches of Vadero, the cops kicked the kids off the beach (tourist only) so we all left. I remember having cab drivers who were doctors moonlighting. I asked one guy to drive faster but he said he could'nt because he could not get any more gasoline. Ate mostly at peoples home for $2 and they would ask me what I wanted the next day and to come back.

Hey there... I really like your video... I do have a few comments... mostly updates from 2014 to today. 1. It is incorrect to say that Cubans cannot leave the country. Since 13 January, 2013 the “exit visa” from Cuba has been eliminated therefore any Cuban can leave the country freely. In 2015, Cuban citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 59 countries and territories, ranking the Cuban passport 77th in the world. To travel to any other country, they require a visa just like anyone else traveling to a country that requires a visa to their passport. 2. Cuban people are just naturally friendly and hospitable and that has nothing to do with the fact that a traveler is from another place. 3. Cuba does NOT stamp any foreign passport, they only stamp CUBAN passports. This is an established policy of Cuban Immigration since the 1980s. Tourists buy a “Tourist Card” which is stamped in and out, but the actual passport is NEVER stamped. Even if you ask for it, odds are you will be refused. I have heard of instances that people actually ask for a stamp on a separate piece of paper for keepsake, and this they will do. Some people just press that paper against the passport to bleed the stamp over, but as you say, in 2014 that was risky. Since the reestablishment of diplomatic relations, well, that is no longer a real issue. 4. The casa experience is definitely one of the highlights of Cuba. I spend years staying at casas and made very good local friends... definitely a good recommendation. 5. The casa food option is a good one, however, be careful of the price. Casa people tend to overcharge. A good alternative to that is a Paladar, which is a private Cuban restaurant, usually also in someone’s back yard or dining room. You may even be lucky to find a Paladar in Cuban Local Pesos (25 pesos to the dollar), where you can have a square meal for 20 pesos which is less than 1$... you need to look for these places, and generally you better be fluent in Spanish... if you are not, if you have an accent, they will show you the “paladar de divisa” which will run you about 4-5 dolars a head. 6. In most of Cuba, casas go around 25 dollars, 30 in Havana… on average... however Casas can be as expensive as 50 dolars a night and meals can go as high as 10 or 12 dolars depending on where you are, how big the place is. Now a day you can even rent an independent apartment (3 beds, 2 baths, living room, dining room, and kitchen) for about 75 dollars. Great option for people travelling in groups, as three bedrooms can accommodate 6 persons or three couples if you wish. 7. Until April of 2015 (a year before this video was made) it was true that American Cards were not valid in Cuba. They have since become accessible, so you can use your debit or credit card issued by US banks at any ATM (which are widely available) to get money. 8. Your friend nick was not arrested, he was merely detained. I have been detained several times, but I was never arrested. An arrest in Cuba is pretty complicated... the fact that the police may take you off the streets, put you in the cooler (especially if you are publically drunk or being a nuisance), until the next day is not arrested. It’s just cooling off. To get arrested there must be a warrant issued by a judge, and you are taken to court very fast… within 24 hours. You should be careful while driving, if you get involved in a fatal car accident and they can establish that you were drunk, or negligent, and then you are facing jail time. In general, the police may detain you, let you cool off then let you go. Worst case, if a foreigner is a problem, they will take him to the airport and put him on a plane out to another country and never allow him to come back to Cuba... this is also done with Cuban Residentes of Abroad (Cubanos residentes del exterior) which , if deported are prohibited from visiting cuba for 8 years. 9. It was never illegal from the Cuban side for an American to visit Cuba... to the contrary; US citizens were always treated with a lot of margin in Cuba, precicly to show the world that Cuba is a nice place. US law made it illegal to go to Cuba, but it was never a felony, it was a misdemeanor with a 10,000 dollar fine. Since the election of President Obama, the people to people program allowed US Citizens to go to Cuba on a cultural package. Since the normalization of diplomatic relations in 2015, US citizens can travel to Cuba on their own, but still need to get Department of Treasury permit (via a travel agency). And yes direct flights can be booked if you have this DOT permit... in fact regular scheuidled flights are due to resume very soon. Times are improving indeed. 10. Unfortunately, the embargo (or blockade as the Cubans call it) was enacted by Congress and only Congress can lift it. The problem is that the republicans control the Congress, and the Cuban American Lobby is strong. If it were up to President Obama that would have been done ages ago... along with a lot of other things. Thumbs up! Hope you visit Cuba again very soon!

+Christopher Pattichis. Passports have been stamped since 2014. I went in April/Sept and December that year, and Dec was the 1st stamp I have ... also, the US law does not say you cannot go to Cuba. The law is that you cannot spend money there (either way, it was ridiculous ... and obviously that rule has changed) .... and to say that ATMs are widely available in Cuba, is very wrong. And counting on them working with your card is another issue. I take cash and a credit card, in event I need to withdraw cash through the credit card, with a bank teller.

a couple things are not true, but most importantly Cuban customs always stamped our passports, they were stamped with the invisible ink, however now it is mandatory that they are stamped in blue ink. also Americans can travel to cuba if they meet one of the 12 travel requirements, none of which are meant to party and hang out by the pool or beach. the departure tax has been rolled into the purchase price of the actual vacation so you no longer have to pay it upon exit. anyway I seriously love cuba, I just hope it stays the same, which is very selfish but I really love the country and try to travel there at least twice per year.

+bloodandwinearered You don`t get it. In Cuba, it is the tourist that is beeing exploited. Cuban are not poor. But they segregated tourists. A price for tourists, hotels for Cuban but not for tourists etc....I tell you, bring a big pile of money compare to many other countries. By the way, there is not so many really poor countries in the world. They mostly do very well with 10-15$ a day. Even with much less in some countries. And i don`t like it when tourist are not permitted to do the same. In Cuba, you can not. Misery is something else. You don`t find it in Cuba. But you find it in USA and Canada. People sleeping outside at 30 below zero, that is misery. Looking for food in Mc donald garbage to eat, that is misery. There is no misery in countries where tourists goes for good time. They may have poor people but that is everywhere. Almost only Cuba exploite outrageoustly the tourists. If you enjoy beeing exploited......you will have great fun in Cuba. It is the perfect place for that.

+Mathieu Tallard Thank you for your clear reply Mathieu. Now I understand what you are saying. I know the system (social/medical/etc.) looks well after the Cuban people. I have traveled through 58 countries and am far too aware of those countries where they live on one dollar a day. Jakarta, Indonesia being the worst I could look upon. Manila in the Philippines is little better. In Canada we have social programs (welfare/social workers/medical and mental care) in the Philippines there is nothing. Born with a hair lip, die with a hair lip. The oldest synagogue in North America is in Cuba. I am not Jewish, but I thought it would be something to add to my list of "firsts" I have seen. I can live without seeing it. It isn't like walking on the great wall of China. You have successfully helped me to rule out Cuba as a travel destination. I can see it is not the place for me.

Cuba is the safest place in America if you compare it the the USA , Canada, the Caribbean and others Latin-American countries. Viva! Cuba! Cuba got the best Healthcare System in America. Viva!Cuba! So that money the USA got and the cannot by pass the Cuban Healthcare System. Viva!Cuba!

Like it or not the United Nations has recognized Cuba Healthcare System as the best in America or and maybe the world, but I know some people find it difficult to accept ,do to the massive propaganda from the USA. Some countries which got more money can only dream of having a Healthcare System as good as the Cubans ,money is not everything in life.

You are full of it, health care is 2 tiered in Cuba if you don't have lots of money your life is in danger to go to a hospital
@alorihuela8952

You would be foolish to make such a statement. Cuba is more literate than a 99.9% of any other country in the world and the system requires around twice as many primary-care doctors per capita as we have in the U.S., made possible because the country also invested in medical education, creating in 1998 what U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called “the world’s most advanced medical school.” Cuba has become known for training not just domestic doctors, but those from around the world-and sending its doctors to help other, wealthier countries when needed. During the recent Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone, more than 100 Cuban doctors and nurses were at the front lines.

+Alphaomarni Karnley Jarbie In Canada young people have been arrested for walking aimlessly and not knowing where go go. In Canada you have to have a destination, if you don't, many of the young get arrested. Same in Cuba. The US won't let anyone into the country unless they have a destination and proof.

+Alphaomarni Karnley Jarbie The police in Cuba is ULTRA careful with foreigners too much so sometimes. And believe it or not they are protecting you. NOT 100% of Cubans are easy going , friendly devil may care . A few WILL rip you off and if you have a rash of bad luck you are FUCKED. A foreigner that seems to be wondering around is live bait so that policeman intercepted a possible robbery . Technically the government doctrine is that ANY crime against a visitor screws up their propaganda of "COME VISIT CUBA" and that is the bread and butter of the country. Unfortunately most of these policemen are brought in from outside La Habana and they have manners where you think they are about to kick your ass. They seldom take anything in stride and are told to be suspicious of ANYTHING . So if YOUR story is flimsy .. they will stay with you but you are not detained. If the guy knew where he stayed he would have been escorted to the place , ask the owner if indeed you were staying there and that's all. Also the guy must have left his passport at home and THAT is illegal in about any country I have visited. The fact is that in the last 20 years , La Habana is one of the safest places in the world for Tourists because the natives are so controlled . hey man I had a machine gun to my temple in Mexico (Monterrey) from a cop looking for a bribe , the "infraction . My driver made a left turn without putting the signal. When I FINALLY was able to get the USA passport out , the cop was shitting bricks because the driver called a superior and the superior almost shot the low level policeman. Had I been European , I would've wound up with at least a gun smack to the temple and a couple hundred dollars short.

13 Days Movie might help you get a taste of U.S. policies. Wait till my generation is all dead. Great video though about the passport stamping - I'd want that too and I"m 59 retired D.C. lawyer. Eisenhower made a great mistake not seeing Castro when he flew to NYC - but the Soviets did not. Study 1965 Domino theories too - sure they were wrong, but World domination was the goal of both slavery systems. One private, one state controlled. What if you were not allowed to do your videos?
