This one is a fun side! It really captures the spirit of the 1920s, with some great solos and some excellent slap-tonguing tenor work by Ray Starita.

Wow, thats roomy! The Wigmore Hall is a very special place, and I can picture Ray Starita's band on that stage, under the frescoes, with just a little too much reverb from the empty auditorium. Reminds me of Jack Hyltons recordings in the cavernous Beethovenhalle in Berlin. As an aside, Jonathan, when did Columbia start using its studios in Petty France?

@@Phaaschh that photo of the band was taken in the Piccadilly Hotel I believe. It appears in Pathe films that Don Parker and Jack Hylton star in. As far as Petty France, I think it was the mid 1920s but I thought their studios were on Clerkenwell Road. They seem to have done a number of public hall recordings in 1926 and 7, but by 1928 these appear to have stopped altogether.

@@JonathanHolmesjazz thanks, Jonathan. Sure, I realise that the photo wasn't from the Wigmore Hall date. Apart from HMV at SQH, the various public hall dates seem to often arise when the studios of the relevant labels were being refurbished. I didn't know Columbia used Clerkenwell Road, that's a new one on me. I wish that more contemporary studio photographs had survived the years.
