Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease of the skin that predominantly involves scaling and inflammation. Aside from its physical manifestations, psoriasis can also result in debilitating psychological effects for those suffering with it. While conventional medicine typically treats psoriasis from the outside in, the reality is that it is an issue that comes from within, and should be treated from the inside out. Things like your genetics, diet, and environmental influences can all contribute to psoriasis.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating psoriasis. They explain why addressing factors such as gut health, immunity, heavy metals, and more can all be instrumental in healing psoriasis.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

Highly dangerous. You mustn't take 20,000 iu for too long. Check other videos on KZbin. You do need to take H2 - mk7 with Vit. D with any D or calcium too. Vit. H2 -mk7 is the means by which D3 can actually do good for your bones. Vit D3 + calcium just makes them fragile.

I have psoriasis for close to 30 years. With all due respect to all doctors research, i will tell you what works for me and not many people know if I really have psoriasis now. I take early morning sunshine daily for 30 minutes, apply only coconut oil in body daily before taking bath, eat only vegetarian diet, consume no liquor or tobacco, pray daily, donate monthly, sleep for 8 hours daily and do not take any other medicine. I am a software engineer and not a doctor but following a simple process above worked for me. Psoriasis may never go away or some day it will - accept it, follow basic process and stay happy. You will be much better in a month - try it. If you get better, please help someone else.

@@nishat3500 I apply coconut oil before taking bath and honestly don't apply anything post shower. I think sunlight and coconut oil worked for me in the long run. Also, try to sleep well and ensure that your stomach/ gut is in good health. Neem and turmeric can also be taken responsibly once every week. Keep it simple, pray and follow the process- you will start to feel better in few days.

Plant-based diets are absolute bullshit. Going carnivore would help you a lot more. Do that and gradually add new foods, as a carnivore diets should be considered as an ultimate elimination diet that’s nonetheless complete in the sense that you can survive indefinitely on it, given that you regularly eat organ meat, and don’t overcook your meat. See if you feel better and if you do, gradually reintroduce new foods; I suggest fruit first, as a lot of people tend to do worse with vrgetables because of all the plant defense chemicals that most mammal-edible fruit doesn’t have; plants WANT you to eat their fruit to disperse the seed, however, they don’t want you to eat their leaves, stems or roots.

Thank you so much for this, we live in Canada and I have shared this with my son. He suffers horribly from psoriatic arthritis and is being treated with biologics. It initially almost completely cleared his psoriasis that was over half his body with 48 hours but now he is struggling again, especially with his joints. He has just done a 3 day fast and is adding food back slowly, one by one. He is such a special young man and it breaks my heart to see him suffer with this. There is a genetic link on the paternal side.

Is he a Coeliac? Coeliac Disease often goes alongside Psoriasis. Check it out. You can get a test. It does mean no wheat, barley or rye though. Some people can eat oats if uncontaminated. We in the UK are luckier in our packaging and labelling and safer with it if ok. Has he had much dental work, amalgams etc. in the last few years before diagnosis? One woman's Ps. cleared when she changed her amalgam to white fillings with no mercury in. My Coeliac D. was diagnosed very late but I only have one patch on one elbow now. Take vitamin D3 inside not outside on the skin only. Take with Vitamin H2 -mk7 to work itself properly.

OMG! I could be that person discussed at minute 13. Severe acne as a teen had me on tetracycline for 18 months. Totally destroyed my gut with issues (chronic) taking the purple pill for years, vitamin D was 8, gallbladder removed in 2000, psoriasis developed in 2001. Nothing had helped me for 22 plus years. Psoriasis only on lower legs and elbows/hands. Recently, I began to treat this as vascular and began a course of exercise on my stationary bike with MARKED improvement. This made me realize that the medical establishment failed me on all counts. I'm just going to now avoid gluten and choose better fruit options....and help myself.

But then I started long term fasting two and a half years ago and a year into it my rosacea was way way better! Yet, when I told him I would be seeing a dietitian to help me with this endeavour, he scoffed at it and said I'd be better off spending my money at weight watchers, and then wrote me a prescription for a second medication. It felt so defeating. But call me crazy, food journaling points to things like nightshades before a flare up. Avoiding dairy for a month cleared up my psoriasis better than any cream or medication ever have. Eating red meat causes digestive distress. I think it's obvious to me that I need to jump in with both feet and try a complete AIP elimination diet once and for all.

I hate giving money to doctors whose egos are so fragile that if they haven’t suggested something and you do, they act as if you could not possibly have a clue about what’s happening to your own body. For a quick immediate relief, if you have nothing else, mix coconut oil with curcuma and some aloe extract; give it a good rub and let it absorb before getting dressed - use organic ingredients (low or free from chemicals). In the shower use Dr. Woods raw black soap (with coconut oil) by experience one soap that is well tolerated for once. Do not use common soap bars as mostly they contain chemicals. Good courage to all and "may the force be with you" : ))))

We all need more of these 2. I have psoriasis. It started over 10 years ago was practicality taking over my body. I was in and coming out of a stressful relationship. Tried the usual creams, same old story. And this is where my journey began with food and health to this day. I also have been diagnosed with cmt I definitely believe I have leaky gut, and a dairy intolerance, I unfortunately have hiatus hernia and take 10mg anti acid tablets which I self medicated myself down from 20mg. I will try getting off them when my diet is much cleaner and im mentally and physically fitter nit to mention my work patterns being a hgv driver. And that's why and how I know these 2 know their stuff. Have I cracked it yet, no but its getting better through education, and this podcast is most definitely another piece of the reassuring information. Thanks a lot guys keep up all the good work you do😊

I have a diary intolerance, psoriasis, hiatal hernia and acid reflux. I went keto/ketovore for two weeks and I sorted my reflux out pretty much straight away. Also, get rid of the anti acid, anti reflux pills. Start taking omega 3 supplements, taking a glass full of water with a spoon full of apple cider vinegar and then try taking Betaine Hydrochloride. Doctors always say take this to limit acid, but you actually want to promote acid to digests your food.

Reminds me of one of my children. Despite being breastfed, had eczema on his skin at 4 months. He would wake himself scratching at night. His face became all red and often bleeding. I'd find a cream that works, then, it would stop working. Finally, I brought him to a nutritionist. We cut out the gluten, dairy and sugar, like suggested in this video. We also cut out Orange and tomato, as apparently, they can aggravate itching. I also used 3 different natural creams and changed them every 3 days. I used a spoon to remove the cream, to prevent bacteria in the tub of cream. This was very effective. His whole body cleared. Then, I discovered when he was 3 that he was allergic to peanuts and salmon. When he tried them, he immediately spat them out, and his face was covered in what looked like nettle stings. I kept him on this diet until he was 7 years old. At this point, we also tried reintroducing peanuts, later salmon. No reaction to peanuts, and just some hives from salmon. We were advised to reintroduce both so he wouldn't develop severe allergies, requiring EpiPen. Apparently, 7 is a key age, or so I was told. He now eats normally and has lovely skin.

I spent 11 years trying to figure out how to clear/cure/get rid of my psoriasis. Not knowing what the research says on how to effectively treat psoriasis naturally. Write down all these options then go and try them all. Think like a scientist. If a holiday improves things is it the sunlight or the relaxation. For me, cutting red meat and dairy (or maybe it's the increase in fruit and veg that I've replaced those with) but also I do more regular exercise and I'm sure that helps (I don't have any reason to stop to find out). I’ve tried Humira, Stelara and methotrexate. Stelara is great but I had to change insurance and went off it for the past six months. Suffering major flare. Dermatologist wants me to try Skyrizi now (another expensive biologic)… I am intermittent fasting, cutting all added sugars, no dairy, no glutens, lots of water; I also have stress, reflux, overweight, chronic anxiety/depression, high cholesterol-so I think losing some weight will help. It’s all stemming from inflammation, according to one doctor I talked to. My blood work is excellent overall except for cholesterol. I’m hoping I can control this without resorting to the biologic.

Hi there. A kind suggestion to try. Soak leftover white rice in a mud vessel along with water overnight. Let it ferment all night. In the morning after brushing teeth drink this soaked water and eat the rice. That's ur probiotic consumed by many Indians. It's called rice kanji. Also eat an apple later which is a prebiotic. Ur condition should clear up in weeks time.

I'm trying this. We'll see. I have had huge improvements in the past from 2 things: not using soap and using only Dove bar soap (not the liquid ones), and reducing stress. But I still have some amount of irritation. So I'm curious to see if this advice helps. If it does, I'll share the specifics I follow.

I too have stopped using soaps at my back and it's really true that soap increases itchiness.

On top of what is being said here, also research what can happen when you correctly use a good NEAR infrared light a few minutes a day. Worked for me.

Hi doctors!! Is there any chance you can address Topical Steroid Withdrawal? Myself and others who have had eczema and psoriasis are now going through this hellish detox. Would love to hear your thoughts
