I just started as a fitter this Friday, learned how to do these things for the first time, working for a sprinkler company. How long does it take for the body to adjust to lifting the heavy pipe?

It will take a while , most important is to lift properly , bend at the knees , dont rotate body with pipe on shoulder as you will get lower back injury , need to turn with you feet keeping body straight . If it heavy get help , use mechanical means when possible , pipe cart ,pipe cricket etc . Dont be a hero as your boss wont pay your bills if you get hurt . Take your time .

The pipe size is 1 inch , the cutting die head is set to 1 inch . It is adjustable up to 2 inch .

Why dope then tape?

Keeps your hands cleaner when working with finished ceilings. Also if you make a lot of pre-fabricated pipe then the teflon tape keeps the dope moist and clean .Just my preference . Would anyone else like to add a comment on this ?

Also never dope the sprinkler heads as it collects in blobs at bottom of sprinkler head . Overtime can harden and prevent discharge voiding manufacturers warranty..Some do but its against the code and not needed. Heads get teflon only .

Dope male threads only . I like to dope then put 4 to 5 wraps of teflon on the first half of thread then 1 wrap on other half to keep entire thread clean .Using both dope and teflon makes it easier to remove piping later on if needed .Never use black permatex .Only approved pipe dope .Teflon is applied clockwise only . The larger the pipe size the more I add teflon . I also make sure to fill the threads a bit , not just add color to the pipe thread .

Since when do heads get Teflon only. Teflon hasn’t even been in the game that long. Threaded pipe on sprinkler systems been around for 100+ years and all the old pipe and heads I take out has dope only. Almost every older guy I work with don’t even use Teflon any any thread unless it’s plug on a ball valve.

@@fitter5423 Are those the same guys that used permatex or and linseed oil with cement ? :) I only use dope and teflon on pipe . Sprinkler heads I only use teflon. If the dope can harden over time then it shouldn't be used . The literature that comes in every box of sprinkler heads should be followed . Some may differ from others.

I always ream . If you dont then an un- reamed pipe creates pressure loss .

Many decades ago a company didnt have a reamer attached to the carriage , when the city inspector noticed this they wouldnt pass the inspection until all the threaded piping was removed and replaced .
