I used to be able to fight. I was OK, really fast. I also knew (know) when to run. It saved me from an ass whooping a couple of times. Now I’m 63 with two bad shoulders. I can’t win a physical altercation, and I can’t run very fast anymore. But I’m an expert marksman, have been most of my adult life. It’s the one thing that will stay with you through the years.

I live in one of the roughest areas of a small city. Many of the people that live round here are druggies and very loud, shall we say? The key, as you say, is not to look like a victim. Having grown up in a pub on the edge of a rough Council estate, looking confident and being situationally aware is a survival trait. I've made it to 60 without any injuries apart from a scar on my hand from a knife that some druggie tried to bury in my head. Three muggings, not a thing lost, and I walked away from all of them. Unfortunately(or fortunately, depending who you ask!), I can't say the same for the muggers. Only last week, in a local store, I walked in, did a quick scan of the aisles and immediately saw some scumbag loitering round, waiting for his opportunity to steal a chicken out of one of the freezers. I made a big deal of picking a basket and when he dashed for the door, I snatched it back out of his hands and calmly walked away, putting the bird back in the freezer. He stood in the doorway, mouth gaping, unsure what just happened. I calmly stared at him for a few seconds, then just turned away to do my shopping. Confidence in any situation is key...🏴😎🏴

There's a big difference between an athletic event and the street. Putting your head on a swivel and avoiding situations that make you vulnerable are practices that become second nature after you learn them. So many women seem to be buying the new 'Netflix woman' image, and have come to believe that they can physically overpower or intimidate a man. You can't. Avoidance is always rule number one. As Mike Tyson said "Everybody's got a plan until you get punched in the mouth." You really don't want to get punched in the mouth. Nor do you want to taunt people that have nothing to lose. I'm not sure that you're sending the right message here. As always, thanks! 🫡

Everyplace I go everyone has there head in their phones. When I go to the store, Dr's, hair appointment, ect. Most times I am the only one that has any situational awareness because everyone is looking at their phones. Even old people witch surprised me. Its a drug and they have gotten everyone addicted. Its really sad. But I guess I'm weird because I still love looking out the window. God bless and good luck 😊.

Something to keep in mind is that there is always someone crazier than you-and this goes both ways. It absolutely is about posturing. Living in a big city, I make brief eye contact with everyone to let them know “I see you.” I have been approached by a couple of sketchy guys and decided to act first with a very loud, and unhinged-looking stance. I know they thought I was crazy and not worth the hassle because they looked at each other and moved on. Of course this will not always be the right response but it is an option.

A way to test someone's intentions in a forced interaction is by humor to see if they laugh or get nervous. I just had that happen the other day when I went to drop off donation supplies & a couple military guys made a quip about taking my bag as a joke - because I looked tired & grumpy, so they tried a bit of humor to lighten the mood. (It was an all day drive to get there & I was wiped by that point, so it showed.)

I taught the Martial Arts for a long time. I made students fight contact in the appropriate gear. Fighting to thentake down and tap out. After the group was trained. It went to 2 on 1 , then 3 on 1 with the lesson of attacking the leader then getting the heck out of the situation. I'm now 70 years old and I carry whenever I want and where I want and how I want. Arizona, has the best gun laws anywhere. And the bad guys know they are the target of most citizens.

Agreed. As a woman, one of the worst things you can do in many real life situations is to stare a MAN in the eye in a situation where you could be in physical contact. Now if you're in some competition - that's one thing. You're in a building with other people withint 50' - that's another thing. But out on the street - in a classroom where you're alone with some guy - many men take direct eye contact as a challenge if it comes from a woman that they have targeted.

something I need to work on. I'm a 62-year-old female. I've had problems for years. We live around a lot of drug addicts and panhandlers and every time I go to the store who do you think they hit up for money, me. I finally learned how to look at them and say no. But I had one just creep right up on me when I was putting groceries in my car because I wasn't paying attention another time. I was shopping with my daughter in a grocery store and an African American man and his white girlfriend. We're shopping and she acted like it was just another day in the Park and he started following me and my daughter around the store staying real close to me like 6 in away trying to intimidate me I started becoming afraid. I tried not to act it and I turned around and looked. dead in the face and he just looks at me and follows me all through the store. Finally made it to manager and said this guy's following me and they asked him if he was and he said yeah. He said I was prejudiced now. Keep in mind I never even spoke a word to him I was terrified to ever go back in that store so I have a lot to learn because they're always out for me

Be aware of your surroundings. Even soldier's go in 2's on post so think about that. If you're a female with small children, have another adukt go shopping with you. Dont make yourself bait. Wear plain clothing when u go out and don't bling yojrself up or dress to draw attention to yourself. Pack a weapon and be sure u can use it safely.

My husband and I have been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 15 years now. I’m only 5’2”, so it’s nice when I surprise people on the mats when I can handle a fully grown man weighing over 200lbs. A lot of people are like “well, he’s going easy on you” which is so insulting to my time on the mats and how hard I’ve worked to get my belts. I can promise you these guys are NOT going easy on me. In fact, they go harder against me because they don’t want to lose to a female. It’s an ego thing. I’ve had guys come at me like a football player, but I know how to manipulate their weight and I use technique against them. Obviously, someone my same belt is always going to be a challenge, but we respect each other.

Very good and timely video that is needed today. Several years ago my daughter was assistant manager at a time staffing company. The person who had a ride to fill out a application had a long violent rap sheet. He never got a ride home and just stayed their. She called me to see her work and she knew i always carry several guns one as a back up. Her boss was leaving and was going to leave her his gun. This guy tried to make small talk and size me up. I just clicked and not any talk. I guess it was because of i had bought and flipped homes on the rougher side of Kalamazoo, Mi. i knew the thinking of thugs and how to spot them. Always keep your head on a swivel and know those types around you. Very good topic

Hmm I don't think confidence really matters much in confrontations. I seen the most confident people get their arse handed to them. What seems more useful is comprehension of the situation. What is gained, what is lost, is it worth it, is it not, what are the odds, what are theirs, is it important, or do you really care? Like my rhyming? Did you see what I did there? lol
