Do tight muscles really cause back pain? We've heard it before, but who better to ask than the leading expert on back pain, Dr. Stuart McGill. He clears the air and also teaches us how to activate our Psoas. Then leaves us with the question of, how much do we actually need to activate it? Man I’ve been lunging and doing the “couch”stretch for hip/back pain forever with very mediocre results Just added the reach and rotation and wow what a difference! My back popped a couple times just from relaxing into the stretch lol Thanks for the awesome info guys!

Always felt tightness on the hip joint thinking it was hip flexor, but now when I stretch by raising the arm on the same side as the leg pushed back and rotate outward, can feel the stretch on the psoas! So good!

That’s amazing man the hip flexor stretches were doing nothing for me, but that twist at the end is just a game changer!! It’s interesting though I can definitely feel the psoas is really tight on the right side and this stretch feels soooo good, but then on the left side I can’t feel it much and it already feels loosened up. It’s almost as if it’s too loose . I think I might benefit from strengthening my left psoas but stretching my right one. You guys might benefit from really feeling how you feel from side to side , and adapting your training to that, because my psoas feels completely different from side to side

Thank you so much for this video. I tweaked my back Pendlay'ing a couple of days ago and such videos help a lot! McGill is a legend! But quadratus lumborum is not the high medial quad. He probably meant to say sartorius. QL is part of the posterior abdominal wall.

Clearly not, Go Check out Innacuracy @ 6mins 37 SECS of this video Quadratus Lumborum (Q.L) is NOT part of the Quadriceps(knee extensors), Q.L is in the Lumbar, low back region. laterally Flexes spine, stabilizes Pelvis.

Cal Dietz says that if you stabilize the hips your core stabilizes. ( I found this to be true) Brian Alsruhe does a great job of this, he just doesn't use big terms. 1get the arch back in your foot and 2 squeeze your butt it'll fix the back.
@RohannvanRensburg
@RohannvanRensburg 3 жыл бұрын
Foot and glute cueing is so important. Core stabilizing is as simple as filling the tank if you have it down from a motor standpoint
@adambarrack
@adambarrack 3 жыл бұрын
Cal Dietz is great, but when he adapts rehab information for performance, some details tends to get lost. Active glutes and a proper foot arch stabilize the pelvis, but a stable pelvis just means the spine potentially doesn't have to move as much. This doesn't necessarily solve all problems, it just reduces demand on the spine. A good counterpoint to his argument is a disc bulge where the disc presses on the sciatic nerve. If I assume good foot posture in my feet and activate my glutes, my pelvis will be stable, but that disc is still pressing on the nerve. People with back pain also tend to activate more core muscles than it really needs because the body thinks it needs the extra stability. This can actually make symptoms worse by increasing compression in the spine, which in turn pushes the disc into the nerve even more. This happens without regard to the pelvis and instead is a nervous-system-induced adaptation in the trunk. All of this to say that the trunk won't always "work itself out" as long as the pelvis is stable.
